• I like the old-man terminology. “He dreamed of blue people 10 feet tall”. Kinda boring, besides the libel at 9mins. OJ was acquitted, O’ slanderous filmmaker. What was this movie about again?

• What annoys me most is that Camereon credits himself in all the interviews that he is the sole entity responsible for making the movie. Many people contribute to the process and he should acknowledge that fact. As he ever said a nice word about Jon and Rae in public. And you dont like the suits at Fox? You like them well enough to take their money. Who battles with Fox for that money…Jon and Rae. In order for the movie to work you need a considerable amount of IMAX theaters. Thank Tom Rothman and Jon for securing as many as they have. Why is it required in your world to cultivate the image of being a prick. A prick stands erect and alone. In the process of creating your film the support keeps you erect and definitely you are not alone.

• Yeah, Jim Cameron is the guy everybody loves to hate because he is a hard-ass, but if you are a fan of the genre, you like some of what he’s done. He doesn’t get an “A” for originality; most of his plots are old-hat to the folks who read the stuff, and some have been direct steals. But his execution of the material is pulse-thundering. Terminator was a great B-movie, but T2 was as good as an action film had ever gotten — that opening truck-chase through the L.A. River was the kind of gag most movies would have been thrilled to use as the final sequence.

  Aliens was the best of that franchise. The Abyss was — in the director’s cut — mind-blowing and terrific. However much you hated Titanic, you saw it, didn’t you? Lot of people did, and like Liberace, I’m guessing Jim cried all the way to the bank — and the Oscars™…

  Yeah, that people nearly died on-set and that nobody knows whether Good Jim or Evil Jim is going to be online on any given day gives one leave to look askance at the man, but studio chiefs will wet their pants at the notion of a billion dollar gross, and how many movies have delivered that again, hmm … ?

  If you don’t like sci fi, stay home. Me, I’m going — that big computer down in NZ has been running at 100%+ and I’m guessing that nobody will have ever seen anything like this. It’s gonna make 2012 look like Plan 9 …

    Yeah, but it is usually attached to something. With Hitler it was an Alsation, with Picasso it was art and women, with Cameron it’s to an ego the size of the Hindenberg and just as inflated.

    With the exception of Alien 11, (made after Ridley Scott founded the genre) and the good sci-fi action yarn Terminator, all Cameron’s films are shallow, vacuous, with clunky dialogue. For example, those stretched Beatle Blue Meanies looking truly sacharin and vomit inducing, sub-Victorian elves and fairies at the bottom of your garden. And it seems fair to make the observation that he seems chronically incapable of sharing the limelight with anybody.

    He has a talent for technical innovation or at least demanding it created to help achieve his vision. I await the film with great interest.

    I am expecting to be attracted and repelled in equal measure, rather like one’s interest in Cameron the man and filmmaker.

• I think it is obvious watching this piece that Cameron does not do this alone. But the admiral in charge of a nuclear aircraft carrier is still the admiral, but no one is fooled that he is doing it all by himself. 60 minutes could have done a story about the network behind Cameron, instead they did a piece on him. I don’t think that is Cameron’s fault.

  Also OJ is a murderer, just not a convicted one. The criminal justice system is not the only way to establish one’s culpability for a crime – it is however the only way one can be imprisoned for that culpability. Two different things and Cameron is right to call OJ out for what he is.

  Finally, I don’t know the whole premise behind “Avatar” but clearly it makes no sense. We have a rapacious military-industrial complex of some kind that wants to mine a pristine moon planet for some highly desirable mineral (that conveniently doesn’t exist on the Table of Elements), but there is a tribe of indigenous blue humanoids there preventing a smooth exploitation. Based on the violence in the trailers, apparently there are no moral qualms about killing them or destroying the planet.

  So why not use a neutron bomb? The radiation and heat will kill all living things without destroying the surroundings. After a short time period, the radiation will disperse and mining can begin. Instead this quasi-govermental enterprise will instead devise some super-duper far-fetched “avatar” dna-mind-implanting technology to “coax” the blue meanies to move on or at least do recon for the imminent invasion? Super-duper stupid. The utility of the neutron bomb for cleaning out humans was part of military doctrine by the 1960s and have been part of the US nuclear arsenal for years. Obviously such a story element would destroy Cameron’s whole movie premise, but it is just one more thing that makes it impossible to take his movie’s premise seriously. Who would choose the most-expensive, most-outlandish solution when an easy one already exists and is literally at your fingertips?

  I’m willing to let the imagination run, but don’t insult our intelligence.

  • One could assume they won’t use a neutron bomb for the same reason they don’t use it today — exploiters usually have to coax their own populations into believing it’s morally okay to exploit from others (because they’re not really human etc) and there are usually pesky international (interplanetary?) laws that pressure you not to flagrantly obliterate other groups — one might imagine the current genocide phobia continues into the future.

• It seems to me, that if you film real actors and then digitize them, it’s not truly a CGI film. I would think if you did everything from scratch, then it’s a CGI film.
