    • MUCH better than the first trailer…I was getting shades of AYBYSS with the first trailer. Now I just hope we don’t have to go through the mess of an extremely editing process. I’m for all the extra bells and whistles with Cameron’s films and I’m sure we’ll get it wit “Avatar”, al I’m saying is if it’s worthy of screen-time, put it on the damn screen.

On, the line “Gentlemen, your not in Kansas anymore still sounds like it’s coming out of a mouth of a “friend/of/Dorthy.’ Robert Duvall could be saying it and it still relects our AFFINITYwith FRANK L.BAUMS classic.

    • Devin Feraci from CHUD exposed! Well, it is a long story and actually quite a convoluted one, long story short, Devin actually got upset that he could not attend an advanced preview (as a member of press) to see an advanced preview of a picture that shall remain nameless. He also has a personal grudge against Jim Cameron himself. This i will explain, Devin has been blacklisted by FOX execs, the reason for this is partially down to the fact that Devin was obnoxious in reviews insulted core members of various teams and insinuated lies and lawsuits. This can even be seen today in his writings on AVATAR`s plagiarism claims. There is also it has to be said a great deal of backdoor shenanigans involving Devin and the hierarchy of FOX. In short Devin is blackballed. Devin found this out via his own message board forums. Now im not standing here trying to defend FOX`s output for the last 6 years, how could i ? What i am trying to inform you on is this… This is personal, This has nothing to do with fan expectation, it has nothing to do with the progress of cinema…

IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH A PERSONAL EFFORT TO DERAIL THE PRODUCTIONS IMPACT.

Yes it is pathetic, yes it is childish, but if you read Devin for any amount of time, you realise childish is exactly what Devin is. the whole AVATAR deal on Chud.com is what the online industry describe as “Leaf littering” take your core audience turn them onto your ideals and use that in turn to attack your enemies. Very simple and very effective. It has been done before and it will continue to happen. It can be a good thing, however when the motives become personal and not representative of the greater fact, that is when moral issues arise. I have it on high authority FOX and in particular Jim Cameron is highly upset with Devin and the continuing abuse he keeps throwing at not just the production but the people who this movie is aimed at (which by the way, is everyone). If you were to lay out the level of abuse aimed at AVATAR and pin that to the production outgoings, you will clearly see that Chud and the level of attack has steadily gone up with the anticipation, until finally we see an attack so blatant and mean that it will make even the most skeptic sit up and pay attention, Devin is literally trying to get third parties involved to actually file lawsuits against the core creators of AVATAR, in particular James Cameron. I am told this is serious stuff, and fox is itching for Devin to step a foot out of line so he can be drawn over the coals. This is a very childish and personal situation Devin has created for himself. My guess is the biggest backlash will eventually fall on Devin

    And such classics as TITANIC…

    In addition to CAMERON, JAMES…

    The TITANIC director presents…

    JAMES CAMERON’s follow-up to TITANIC…

    …JAMES CAMERON’s AVATAR…

Comment by daveo — October 29, 2009 @ 12:59 pm  Reply to this post
    • i mean, you simply make no sense whatsoever. titanic is the highest grossing film of all time (appeals to the female audience) and touting aliens/true lies gets the potential male audience testosterone going.

all along the claim about avatar has been the theater experience. viewing a relatively thin plot most likely doesn’t do justice to the notion of an “avatar movie experience”

i think james cameron is exceptionally egotistical, but too be honest, with good cause. he has made billions for fox, and it would be foolish for them not to brag about his past successes.

if you’re not excited about avatar, that’s fine, it’s not going to sell 6 billion tickets. but, come on now.

  • Let me see if I understand what this is about…..

White man wants a priceless jewel that exists on another planet that is inhabited by odd looking colored creatures. White man disguises himself as odd colored creature in order to infiltrate, kill and retrieve.

    The End?

  • Absolutely more impressive than the first trailer.

Comment by John Moon — October 29, 2009 @ 1:27 pm  Reply to this post
  • This film is going to be a modern Heaven’s Gate. With it’s budget over $300 million (sorry Time magazine, your initial estimate was correct, despite your retraction), the only way Avatar will earn its money back is if every man, woman and child in America sees it twice. That ain’t gonna happen, not by a long shot. I’ve seen over 40 minutes of the film and it’s weak, weak, weak.

Cameron’s folly will most certainly fail. And it couldn’t have happened to a nicer fella.

Comment by Finn — October 29, 2009 @ 1:30 pm  Reply to this post
  • Absolutely more compelling than the first trailer.
I agree with the first poster on that.
I haven’t seen anything like 40 minutes of the movie (all I’ve seen is the 3D footage released on “Avatar” day) but that Jar Jar Binks/Ferngully conversation has been had to death.

so while I still agree that it looks like a cartoon – this trailer makes me actually give a shit for at least a little bit…

    Comment by SimAlex2000 — October 29, 2009 @ 2:01 pm  Reply to this post
  • Looks weak. Another variation on the “white man joins the natives and takes up the fight” genre. The dialogue sounds like a collection of tired, tough guy action movie cliches (”You are not in Kansas anymore” and “this, this is our land”). I also don’t think it is a good idea to have characters state their motivations (All I need is something to fight for). I don’t see what the excitement is about.

Comment by G. Lira — October 29, 2009 @ 2:12 pm  Reply to this post
  • I’m excited to see this movie unlike any other movie I’ve seen in a long time after seeing that trailer. My anticipation for The Dark Knight was high as it was for the first Batman, Fight Club, and The first Star Wars prequil, but this film offers a new world that looks absolutely fantastic and a story that appears to be of epic proportions. Cameron is sure to hit all the right notes and sweet spots.

While obviously targeted toward males, the romantic elements presented in the trailer may be enough to draw in signifant female viewers considering the romantic elements in Cameron’s previous hit and should have all the girls who were dragged to the movie by their boyfriends and husbands also leave the theater satiated and with a sense of exileration.

I’ll be sure to make my first advance ticket purchase in the best 3-D theater I can find for ‘AVATAR.’

I am a great fan of fantasy and some sci-fi, but this just looks too juvenile to me. That’s fine (not hating on the kiddie stuff, trust me-it has saved my butt plenty on the kids sleepover weekends), except this is being sold as a movie for grown-ups. Not sure it’s hitting on that level….

Comment by Sherry — October 31, 2009 @ 7:01 am  Reply to this post
  • “Avatar” looks like nothing more than “Dancing With Wolves” in outer space with a $250 million+ budget in 3D: White Knight joins a conquering army determined to wipe out a native population and rob them of their land and resources. But White Knight has a change of heart, sees the light, gets with the natives and their way of life, and decides to stand with them in defending their land against his former band of genocide-mongers. Oh, and White Knight falls in love with a native woman along the way. 10 points to anyone who can name five other Hollywood movies with this same story-line or a similar variation.

  • As much as a Cameron fan as I am I can not believe that he would be involved with a film that looks fantastic but is nothing more than a repeat of what the White Man did to my ansestors-”Let’s Forceably relocate the locals for our profit”. This is their home but we need to make money off of what is theirs.

Comment by Wendel 'BlackWolf' Kurz — October 29, 2009 @ 3:40 pm  Reply to this post
    • Completely agree. The whole concept looks endlessly predictable — the marine who’s going to change his thinking once he’s in his Navi body, who’s going to fall in love with one of the natives, and guaranteed there will also be one sympathetic human to his plight too.

As much as this is supposed to be “groundbreaking” it’s basically DANCES WITH WOLVES in outer-space, and I’ll be thrilled if it’s not as cliched as it looks.

Comment by Doc Michaels — October 29, 2009 @ 8:19 pm  Reply to this post
  • Let me get this straight:

“Evil white men” working for an “evil corporation” seek to take over a foreign land and control it’s energy resources until a marine “goes native” and helps them fight back?

Sheesh. Every liberal in this country will see this 10 times. Just substitute Haliburton for the corporation and Iraq for Pandora.

This is a good trailer however (and I hope it’s not true) I can’t stand movies that show all the best parts of the movie in the trailer and the rest of the movie is just ok if not boring. We will just have to wait and see.

  • “Dances with Jar Jar Binks” meets “The Treasure of CGI Madre” meets “More Bloated Dialogue from THE KING OF THE WORLD!”

Looks pretty. Lots of explosions. Neato spacecraft. Love love love Sigourney Weaver. But it looks really really really really really really really really really really really really stupid.

I feel the same way, oddly, about Hollywood + Highland. Lots of parking, true. But they had $100s of millions to spend, and THAT’S what they built? They could have built anything, but that’s what they ended up with?

Cameron had a decade and unlimited cash to spend. And this is how he chose to spend his talent? I mean, I just saw CHRISTMAS CAROL. Robert Z made USED CARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, and ROMANCING THE STONE (a bit dated, but still a fun flick) and so he’ll always be my hero, but he chose to spend two years of life and, I dunno, $200 mil to make that stinking pile of mo-cap crap? The best thing about XMAS CAROL is that the mo-cap has rendered Jim Carrey completely unrecognizable, resulting in his best performance ever.

Never mind. I’m sure it’s brilliant and will make piles of cash. WTF do I know? I just don’t understand these A-list director dudes anymore. They should be making a movie a year, every eighteen months, minimum. They turned movie-making into rocket science; they’re more interested in the technology that the story. And that makes my eyes rain!

And let’s face it – there is no real difference between a 13 year old and a 33 year old anymore, except a 33 year old can drink and drive and feel no shame when they play shoot ‘em up war games while their peers are getting blown to pieces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s warped and disjointed and has no substance in reality. The Abyss. Titanic. GREAT films. WHY? WE COULD RELATED TO THEM! What is this movie about????? More importantly, who cares. Technology suffocates, destroys and drowns the TRUTH!!!! Where is the truth, Jim. I love you, but where is the truth???? With great power you have great responsibility and as bad as this hurts me, you have failed. That’s okay. You’re a great talent. Just not this picture. Sorry, but thumbs waaay down. 1.5 out of 5 stars.

Reminding us what it was like growing up a kid in the midwest. Not just gaze and stare at them from afar, not having any previous intimate knowledge of them and remark how beautiful they look. The secret is in the seed, Jim. You forgot to plant the seed.

  • Much better than those ponderous first trailers that said nothing and showed way too much sfx vs. real people. Still, the storyline feels as retreaded and stilted as Titanic’s did. Though of course, JC made up for it w. the grandeur of his filmmaking and that great 2nd half after the iceberg hit. Perhaps it’ll be the same here.

  • Yeah. It does kind of look like The Last Samurai meets Dances With Wolves meets Stargate Atlantis.

Kind of cheesy storyline. I mean, if they really do want to get rid of all the aliens and clear the land… why not just drop a few dozen atomic bombs???

  • You’re not in Kansas anymore? Wow, did they say that?

The good news? Cameron keeps half the town working.

The bad news? Cameron will make more hybrids like this.

The good news? It will take another ten years before we suffer another Cameron film.

The Bad news? If this makes money we get to see more Cameron gloating.

The Good News? Once it hits DVD it’ll be lots of fun to laugh inappropriately.

  • Sorry, but this seems just as bad as the last trailer. The dialogue is atrocious, the Navi still look ridiculous, and the plot seems bog standard. You’d think ten years would give Cameron enough time to come up with something original.

  • It’s a very good trailer…except for the times when the Na’vi appear. I have to assume the cgi just looks really, really good in 3D, otherwise, I’m not sure what to say. Then again, even if the cgi truly does look like “actors in makeup”- as Cameron has claimed- the whole design of the Na’vi is still a bit silly.

The other problem is that we’ve all seen this story before- in everything from Dances With Wolves to Star Trek: Insurrection. I’m just not convinced that these little blue people are going to make it any better. I’m honestly still surprised by how silly the Na’vi look.

On a side note, the premise is that Sam Worthington’s character is controlling the Avatar from inside a machine. So if he helps the Na’vi overthrow the humans, he’s obviously not going to get to stay with his little blue woman. I guess that will be the big emotional ending, unless Cameron goes the Splash route and has the human run away with his strange new love.

  • Seems like I’ve seen this before. The only difference being the name of it’s first incarnation; “Battle For Terra”. Anyone else see the plot similarities? Sure, the visuals are dramatically better. But give us an original story, please!

  • Win, lose or draw, I’ll see it no matter what, and there’s very few films I’m willing to drag my ass to the theater to see win, lose or draw these days. Looking forward to seeing it in a nice big theater, big screen, 3D, good sound system, the whole spiel.

Whatever you think of Cameron, I wouldn’t count him out. Even if it doesn’t live up to the expectations or the hype, I still think it will be pretty damn good regardless.

  • If you have a choice, the images and the colors will look BEST using Dolby’s 3D system (the orangey-silvery mirrory glasses). Reel D has a hard time pumping enough light through all of the polarization. The Arc-light uses both, I believe. Dolby’s system is newer and not as well established.

It doesn’t seem to commit the film to a feeling.

    Cameron’s use of archetypes continue.

Many older geeks with kids who normally Netflix, etc will see this in 3-D. Myself included.

I don’t know if this can close with women tho. It’s mechs, man.

  • Any movie with Sigourney Weaver has one good thing going for it. Probably not fair to judge the cgi since it’s designed for the new 3D. I’ll admit the story doesn’t grab me, but neither did Dances with Wolves until I saw it. So, I’ll reserve my opinion for now. I hear they may do another Alien movie with Sigourney and I’d go see that, as long as it’s not like the last one. I’m still waiting for the next Blade Runner, so I’m really picky.

  • this movie isnt for adults just like the last 4 star wars werent for adults. this is a family movie. one of those family movies where dad doesnt mind going to it. You’re telling me a 9 year old boy is going to see someone riding a flying dinosaur and wont want to see it? Hell I’m a 25+ year old boy and i want to ride that dinosaur.

Family movies make money. And who here really cares if it makes money. Its not gonna go into your pockets if it does anyway. Let it just be art. You cant tell me that trailer didnt look vivid and beautiful

Cameron made a pet project to create new technology. And it works, and it’ll change the way CGI based movies are made. Maybe not today but there is now a platform to start from.

everyone of you on this board would do the same if someone gave you a blank checkbook. expect your cast wouldnt be as good. and you havent won a ton of oscars.

Were the casting specs “find me the most unlikable and/or unrecognizable people in Hollywood”? (except for poor Sigourney, who should not be there at all).
It’s gonna be huge because people like big, bloated, stupid movies with cheesy, stupid, rehashed dialogue and cheesy, rehashed storylines just like this one. And lots of toys for the boys.

Combining ground-breaking visuals with a story line that was tiresome the first time we saw it–and hasn’t gotten any better all the times we’ve seen it since then–seems like an awfully silly gamble to take with $300 million.

I might have spent $301 million and paid someone to come up with an original and somewhat watchable story line.

  • I honestly think this trailer is no better than the last. It doesn’t help that it presents a film I feel like I’ve seen many times already. I’ve got faith in Cameron, but it’s admittedly shaken by this.

CGI is CGI. Knowing this alone prevents me from believing what I’m seeing. No 3-D gimmick will ever change that.

  • I honestly don’t get all the hating. I’m as cynical as the next guy, but it looks to me, at worst, entertaining. is it the next coming of filmmaking? No. Was it too expensive? duh. Is it overloaded with familiar themes and overused set pieces? Yep. Does it have the potential to entertain and transport an audience? Probably. And if it does that without changing the world, even the entertainment world, does that mean the money was ill spent and Cameron deserves all this derision? I fear the business has become so difficult and oppressive that we look for any opportunity to crap on others’ work as a salve for our own frustrations.

  • Interesting and impressive trailer. The story line seems a hackneyed though and what little dialog there was kind of trite. I’d be a very concerned about the cost. Does the 300 million include marketing and distribution? If not (hell, even if it does) this movie may take a very long time and all the usual avenues (boxoffice, pay-per-view, premium tv and dvd) just to break even. If it gets panned by the critics there may be a lot of blood on the floor at Fox.

With all the money and talent that was thrown at this project you think they could have come up with something more original.

  • Yep this is Dances with Wolves in a 3D video game. That said, it will pack people in and ultimately some day earn its money back. It would have been nice to have an original story but the audience will forgive that to go on this journey. Its a shame. But that’s how it is. Give Cameron his due. It takes brass balls to make this and do it without much of a story for so much money. Just think of all the new technology he will have invented on Fox’s dime that we will all benefit from in the service of better stories in the future by other film makers.
