Now that others are hinting at this, I can confirm what I've known for two months: that David Geffen isn't interested anymore in buying the Los Angeles Times.

Shit. No I really do have to cancel my subscription to the Times–are there any other good papers in town?
The only other newspaper in town remotely close to the Times is the Daily News. Not nearly as good and Valley oriented (It started out as a San Fernando Valley newspaper). Even with the way Zell is destroying the Times, its still much better than the Daily News (or other daily papers like the Pasadena Star News or the Long Beach Press Telegram). There is simply no option to the Times. And, unfortunately, Zell paid so much for the Times, and secured his debt with all the Times’ assets, that there is no realistic possibility of another buyer (Geffen or anybody else). The economics of the situation rule out any White Knight solution.
one of the ‘fired’ from LA times should start a new paper. if every a city was crying out for some newspaper competition it’s LA. NY has the Post, Wall St journal, NY Times etc. what does LA have? variety (just press releases basically) and LA Times (boring) has anyone seen the evening standard in london? take a look at that paper – it would work in LA.
don’t just sit there – get entrepreneurial guys…
Millions of people now get their news from the Internet. Note all the people coming to this DHD site for news. Newspaper circulation and ad revenue are down from coast to coast. Geffen would not be too smart to buy a traditional newspaper. They are dinosaurs becoming extinct.News via the Internet is instantaneous and often combined with interactive capability so we unwashed masses can comment upon news events immediately as they take place.
