Tina Fey Channels Steve Carell On Emmys

Nellie Andreeva

Tina Fey was a good sport about her NBC comedy 30 Rock surrendering the spotlight to new kids Glee and Modern Family this year, issuing two funny statements on two of her nominations for 30 Rock (she also shares a writing nom with Kay Cannon):

- on 30 Rock‘s best series nom: ”This is great news. We’re grateful and excited.  Especially since today is the fifth anniversary of the day NBC forgot to cancel us.”

- On her best comedy series nomination: ”This is great and exciting news.  Also, this seems like an appropriate time for me to announce to NBC that I will not be renewing my contract… with my gym,” Fey said, echoing Steve Carell’s recent statements that he plans to leave The Office when his contract expires at the end of next season.

30 Rock still did pretty well with 15 nominations, including best comedy series, writing, directing as well as acting noms in all categories except for best supporting actor.

Conan O’Brien, Betty White Get Noms
62nd Primetime Emmy Nominees

UPDATED: The Emmys finally brought out some new blood… and a lot of blood in general, with vampire drama True Blood and serial killer drama Dexter. But the big showing of freshmen Glee and Modern Family as well as  the breakthrough for other first-time major nominees, emmysfreshman The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie in its first eligible year, the much-improved sophomore Parks and Recreation and the long-overlooked True Blood and Friday Night Lights, was the big story this morning. Glee is in fact the most nominated series this year with 19 nominations. (Modern Family was No.4 on the list behind Mad Men, which had 17, and 30 Rock with 15). HBO’s mega-mini The Pacific led the overall pact with 24 nominations.

And while best comedy series noms for both Glee and Modern Family were widely expected, both shows well exceed expectations in the acting fields. Glee landed noms in every comedy series acting category, including lead comedy actress (Lea Michele), lead comedy actor (Matthew Morrison), supporting actress (shoo-in Jane Lynch), supporting actor (Chris Colfer), guest actor (Mike O’Malley, Neil Patrick Harris) and guest actress (Kristin Chenoweth).

Modern Family, whose six-member ensemble cast submitted themselves as supporting, earned first-time Emmy noms for 5 of them: Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara.  Surprisingly, the best-known Modern Family cast member, … Read More »

62nd Primetime Emmy NomineesEnd of An Era For Letterman as Emmy Streak Is Halted

UPDATED: It was on the air for only seven months and NBC didn’t campaign for it, but The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien swept the Emmy categories for best variety music or comedy series, landing 4 nominations, including for best VMC series. Its predecessor/successor, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno didn’t get a single nod. emmysIn fact, Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien was the only late-night broadcast talk show to make the cut in the top VMC series category, joined by Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and Colbert Report, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and NBC’s sketch comedy Saturday Night Live.  And that was not all: The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien also got nominated for writing, directing and art direction. A lot of sentimental voting here. And who knows, those ads O’Brien’s new employer TBS ran in his support may have helped too… UPDATE: Conan tweeted his reaction: ”Congrats to my staff on four Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien

- Betty White brought Saturday Night Live big ratings, now she is also bringing the NBC sketch comedy show a truckload of Emmy nominations. The Mother’s Day SNL episode she hosted earned 7 nominations, including one for her in the guest star comedy … Read More »

KNBC Tops LA Area Emmy Nominations

Nellie Andreeva

With the nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards only two weeks away, the TV Academy today announced the 62nd Los Angeles area Emmy nominations. KNBC and KTLA top the list with 15 and 14 noms, respectively. The Academy was most generous in the evening newscast category, nominating virtually every local station that has nightly newscast: KCBS, KNBC, KTTV, KCOP, KTLA, KWHY and KMEX. In four categories there was a single nominee that automatically wins, including live coverage of an unscheduled news event won by KTLA’s coverage of the death of Michael Jackson exactly a year ago. The rest of the winners will be revealed at a ceremony on July 31 at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.
