Lionsgate has slotted Johnny Depp-starrer Mortdecai for February 6, 2015. The action comedy, adapted from the 1970s novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli, centers on debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Depp). Charlie juggles angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist as he travels the globe in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filed with Nazi gold. Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, and Jeff Goldblum co-star. David Koepp directs from a script by Eric Aronson. Depp produces with Christi Dembrowski and Andrew Lazar. Gigi Pritzker exec produces. Mortdecai will open against Warner Bros’ action pic Run All Night and Universal’s Seventh Son.
Lionsgate and Oddlot Entertainment have added Aubrey Plaza, Oliver Platt and Jeff Goldblum to the cast of Mortdecai, joining Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor and Gwyneth Paltrow in the action comedy based on Kyril Bonfiglioli’s three-novel anthology. Plaza currently stars on NBC’s Parks And Recreation. On the film side she was recently seen in The To Do List and voiced Claire Wheeler in Monsters University. Platt’s films include X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Love And Other Drugs and Frost/Nixon. Goldblum (Independence Day, Jurassic Park) will next be seen in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. Plaza is repped by CAA and The Schiff Company; Platt by WME and Edelstein, Laird & Sobel; and Goldblum by ICM Partners and Industry Entertainment.
Dorian Missick Cast In ‘Annie’; Morgan Freeman To Narrate IMAX Docu; Fran Kranz Joins ‘Mojave’; ‘Mortdecai’ Adds Guy Burnet
Southland‘s Dorian Missick has been cast in Columbia’s Annie remake. He and Tracie Thoms will play Annie’s “fake parents” in the pic which stars Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx. Will Smith and Jay-Z are producing the Christmas 2014 release which begins filming in NYC this Fall. Missick recently shot the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Beware the Night with Eric Bana and Joel McHale. He’s repped by Innovative Artists, MJ Management, and Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson and Binder.
WB has tapped Morgan Freeman to narrate Island of Lemurs: Madagascar. The IMAX 3D docu adventure features lemur expert Patricia Wright and tracks the species indigenous to the lands of Madagascar. The pic reunites Freeman with writer/producer Drew Fellman and director David Douglas (Born to Be Wild 3D). Island of Lemurs opens in select IMAX and IMAX 3D screens April 4. Freeman is repped by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods, Much Ado About Nothing) is joining William Monahan‘s Mojave opposite Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, and Walton Goggins. The Atlas Independent indie follows a near-suicidal artist who escapes to the desert only to encounter his doppelganger-like antagonist, a homicidal drifter.
The first pic to fall under this multi-movie, multi-year deal is Mortdecai, the Johnny Depp action comedy adapted from the 1970s novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli. David Koepp is set to direct from Eric Aronson’s script. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and, as we broke, The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn are aboard to co-star. The two companies already have partnered for Ender’s Game, the sci-fi pic that Lionsgate releases November 1. One project we’re told is not in the mix: the Oddlot-financed Rosewater, directed by Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart. Here’s today’s release:
SANTA MONICA and CULVER CITY, CA, September 19, 2013 – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) and OddLot Entertainment have formed a multiyear, multipicture co-financing and distribution deal beginning with OddLot’s co-financing of the action comedy Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp, the two companies announced today. The arrangement provides a framework for Lionsgate and OddLot to co-produce and co-finance additional pictures that may be sourced by either party, and it provides OddLot with access to committed distribution on certain pictures.
EXCLUSIVE: The Newsroom actress soon could be added to the cast of the adaptation of Kyril Bonfigloi’s anti-hero art dealer novels. I’ve learned Olivia Munn is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor in the David Koepp-directed Mortdecai. Details are sketchy about Munn’s potential role in the Lionsgate thriller, but it’s doubtful that she’ll be playing the Jock Strapp character, Mortdecai’s long-suffering manservant in the books. Eric Aronson wrote the script for the film from Bonfigloi’s 1970s work with Depp playing the roguish Charlie Mordecai. Besides her role as business journalist Sloan Sabbith on Newsroom, Aaron Sorkin sophomore HBO drama, the former Daily Show correspondent is also in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer-produced horror crime film Beware The Night with Eric Bana. Munn is repped by CAA and Mosaic.
Johnny Depp is in negotiations for the lead role in Lionsgate‘s Mortdecai, an adaptation of the 1970s novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli. David Koepp is set to direct from Eric Aronson’s script. Depp would play the role of debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charles Mortdecai. As one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, Depp frequently falls in and out of projects. As recently as May 30, he exited the Barry Levinson-directed Black Mass, the story of Whitey Bulger. He’s currently onscreen in Disney’s The Lone Ranger and is wrapping Wally Pfister’s directorial debut Transcendence. Koepp and Depp worked together on the director’s Secret Window in 2004 and were teamed to reboot The Thin Man at Warner Bros before that project was put on the back burner.
