Felicity Huffman To Star In John Ridley’s ABC Pilot ‘American Crime’

huffmanFormer Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman is back at ABC with a lead role in another hourlong project, pilot American Crime. Huffman has closed a deal to play the female lead opposite Timothy Hutton in the drama, written and exec produced by 12 Years A Slave‘s John Ridley. It centers on the racially charged murder of a war veteran and the subsequent trial, which are examined through the personal lives of the players involved. Huffman will play Barb Skokie, Russ’ (Hutton) stoic ex-wife and mother of the killed young man, Matt. She raised her two sons alone in public housing while her husband was off gambling. She still resents living as the only single white woman in a racially charged environment and being treated accordingly by the other occupants. Determined to hold someone accountable for Matt’s murder, Barb plans to stay close to the investigation and get answers.

Felicity Huffman is in negotiations for the female lead in the project, written and exec produced by John Ridley, who is fresh off winning an Oscar for 12 Years A Slave. It centers on the racially charged murder of a war veteran and the subsequent trial, which are examined through the personal lives of the players involved. Hutton, repped by Untitled, WME and Jackoway Tyerman, will play Chuck Skokie, a former gambling addict-turned-honest working man whose adult son Matt is the victim.

millerPenelope Ann Miller, coming off a stint on ABC’s Mistresses, has been cast in the network’s drama pilot American Crime. Written and exec produced by John Ridley, fresh off winning an Oscar for 12 Years A Slave, it centers on the racially charged murder of a war veteran and the subsequent trial, which are examined through the personal lives of the players involved. Miller, managed by APA and Untitled, will play Eve, the emotionally shattered mother of the killed man’s badly beaten wife who is on life support.

Chris Butler - Headshot  - Much Ado - 10-15-10King & Maxwell alum Chris Butler has booked NBC’s multi-camera comedy pilot Lifesaver, from writer Wil Calhoun, Uni TV and TBD Entertainment. The odd couple comedy centers on the uptight, controlling and a bit neurotic Dr. Graham Permenter (Cgristian Borle) and loose cannon Leon (Jonathan Ryland), who become inextricably linked after Leon saves Graham’s life by giving him a kidney. Butler, repped by SDB Partners and Pine River Entertainment, plays Campbell Carter, the entitled/selfish childhood friend and neighbor of Dr. Parmenter. He has been recurring on The Good Wife.

Earl Brown have been cast in American Crime, ABC’s drama pilot written and exec produced by John Ridley, fresh off winning an Oscar for 12 Years A Slave. Martinez, repped by SDB Partners, will play Alonzo, a hardworking, middle-class widowed father whose son is accused of the crime. He previously recurred on Sons Of Anarchy and is coming off an arc on House Of Cards. Brown, repped by Greene & Associates and manager Lynn Rawlins, will play Tom, the emotionally distraught father of Lily, widow of the murdered war vet. He next will be seen in Draft Day and Wild.

The ABC project centers on the home invasion and murder of a young war veteran and his beauty queen wife in Modesto, CA. APA-repped Cabral will play Hector Tonz, a hustler and occasional drug dealer who is implicated in the murder and attack of the young couple. Ortiz will play Tony Gutierrez, Alonzo’s son who is eager for independence and sick of his dad’s rules.

The TV project, which also tackles racial issues, is set in California’s Central Valley. It centers on a racially charged murder and the subsequent trial, which are examined through the personal lives of the players involved. The case takes on greater meaning in the community, bringing to the forefront America’s hardened views on race, class and gender politics. Ridley wrote the script and is executive producing with former ABC Studios head of drama-turned-producer Michael McDonald through ABC Studios. 12 Years A Slave has emerged as a leading Oscar contender following its Golden Globes win on Sunday. Ridley started in television before focusing primarily on features for the past few years. American Crime joins other ABC drama pilots How To Get Away With Murder, Sea Of Fire as well as series Secrets & Lies.

ABC has put in development drama American Crime, written/executive produced by Ridley and executive produced by former ABC Studios head of drama-turned-producer Michael McDonald through ABC Studios. Set in California’s Central Valley, American Crime centers on a racially charged murder and the subsequent trial, which are examined through the personal lives of the victims, the accused and their families. The case takes on greater meaning in the community, bringing to the forefront America’s hardened views on race, class and gender politics. Ridley, repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, is in Oscar contention with his script for 12 Years A Slave, which kicked off the awards season today by leading the Gotham Independent Film Awards nominations. Ridley started in television before focusing primarily on features for the past few years. He was just tapped by MGM to do a rewrite on Ben-Hur.
