AngelWorld Dives Into ‘Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’; Biel, Moretz, Morgan To Star

Jessica Biel Devil And The Deep Blue SeaTwo days ago, AngelWorld Entertainment announced the creation of a $150M equity fund with merchant bank First Wall Street. The next day, it said it would finance and produce The Big Shoe starring Susan Sarandon and Jim Sturgess. And on the third day, the company says it has signed on to finance and produce The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea starring Jessica Biel, Chloë Moretz, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Set in New Orleans, the story follows grieving widower Henry, whose wife recently died in a car accident. He finds refuge by helping a wisecracking young girl fulfill her dream of building a raft and sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. Biel plays the wife, Morgan is the widower and Moretz is the aspiring sailor.

Segueing to features, Private Practice‘s Bill Purple will direct from a script by Natural Selection‘s Robbie Pickering. Justin Timberlake will compose and serve as music supervisor for the soundtrack. Biel is producing with Michelle Purple under their Iron Ocean Films banner and alongside Preferred Content’s Ross M. Dinerstein and AngelWorld’s Darby Angel. Principal photography is set to begin in the fall.

Biel is represented by CAA and Management 360; Moretz and Timberlake by WME. CAA, which represents Pickering, set up financing for the film and represents North American distribution rights.

New Fund AngelWorld To Back ‘The Big Shoe’ With Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess

(Cannes) May 20, 2012 – AngelWorld Entertainment (AWE), who on Saturday announced the launch of their $150m equity fund, will finance and produce The Big Shoe, a sexy comedic drama directed by Steven Shainberg (Secretary), from a script by Shainberg and Mickey Birnbaum. The film will star Jim Sturgess (One Day, Across the Universe) and Academy Award Winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Robot & Frank, The Snitch), who can next be seen together in Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas. Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance Productions will produce alongside AngelWorld Entertainment’s Darby Angel. HanWay Films will be handling international sales while CAA will represent the North American rights.

With filming set to begin in fall 2012, The Big Shoe follows Nate (Sturgess), a gifted shoe designer forced to break free from a family who want to cheapen his art for their own commercial gain. Overbearing mother Irene (Sarandon) hires a psychotherapist and a ‘muse’ to lure Nate back to work.

Swarovski Entertainment, the film production arm of the 117-year-old jewelry company that gave sparkle to Dorothy’s ruby red slippers, is in Cannes talking up its debut feature. Romeo And Juliet, from a script by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, stars Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti, Natascha McElhone, Stellan Skarsgard, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville. Shooting recently wrapped on the Carlo Carlei-directed film for which Camela Galano’s Speranza 13 Media is selling foreign rights and UTA and ICM are co-repping domestic. Ileen Maisel and Lawrence Elman of Amber Entertainment are producers. The film is a classic adaptation and Fellowes assures Deadline he was not attempting to one-up the Bard by writing a transfer. “It wasn’t improving, it was clarifying and creating links for the audience,” he says.
