TCA: Kate Walsh Comes To Defense Of NBC’s ‘Bad Judge’

By | Sunday July 13, 2014 @ 5:40pm PDT

TCA: Kate Walsh Comes To Defense Of NBC’s ‘Bad Judge’TV critics seem to have reservations about NBC’s new comedy series Bad Judge. The single-camera comedy stars Kate Walsh as Rebecca Wright, a tough judge serving in the Los Angeles County courts, whose private life is pretty wild.  In the comedy, co-created by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and Anne Heche, Wright meets an eight-year-old boy whose parents she’d put in the hoosegow.

Walsh said she loved the idea of playing a character who, in the first four pages of the script, wakes up with a hangover, gets a pregnancy test and is revealed to be a judge. “It was super appealing,” she said, describing her initial reaction to the role as the sensation of having her nose pressed up to a candy-store window.

Bad Judge - Season PilotThe two characters on Bad Judge are expected to undergo reworking. The project just-enlisted Liz Brixius as showrunner. Written by Chad Kultgen, Bad Judge, from Universal TV and Gary Sanchez, stars Kate Walsh as wild child Rebecca Wright, who knows how to have a good time but she also happens to be one of L.A.’s toughest and most respected criminal court judges. Zickel played Gary, a psychiatrist who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Rebecca, often is called into her courtroom as an expert witness — and often winds up necking furiously with her in chambers. Myrin played Jenny, Rebecca’s best friend who is privy to all the details of Rebecca’s scattered, tumultuous romantic life.

NBC_logoUPDATE: NBC has ordered a pair of Gary Sanchez Productions comedy pilots — the Kate Walsh-starring Bad Judge and the Krysten Ritter-starrer Mission Control – and with a third series order is back in the multi-camera game adding One Big Happy for midseason. I hear Mission Control and One Big Happy orders were for six episodes eyed for midseason. I also hear this will wrap the network’s pickups for the day.

NBC has been high on the gay-straight relationship sitcom One Big Happy produced by Ellen DeGeneres and starring Elisha Cuthbert and Nick Zano, though there had been questions whether the single-camera-heavy NBC would be open to dabble back into multi-camera sitcoms. (Besides One Big Happy, NBC brass also liked the Jerrod Carmichael multi-camera presentation, though it has not been picked up) Written by Liz Feldman, One Big Happy from Warner Bros TV and DeGeneres’ A Very Good Prods centers on best friends Lizzy (who is gay) and Luke (who is straight) who have been like family since they were kids. The best friends decide to have a baby together, but things get complicated when the man finds the love of his life (Kelly Brook) and a different kind of family is born. Brandon Smith, Rebecca Corry and Chris Williams co-star. Feldman and director Scott Ellis serve as executive producers with DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman.
