EXCLUSIVE: MGM has set The Strangers writer-director Bryan Bertino to script Abe, the feature based on the chilling short film by British writer/director/VFX artist Rob McLellan. McLellan will make his feature directing debut based on the short about a robot serial killer, and Kevin Misher and Steve Tzirlin will produce it. McLellan wrote the first draft, but the intention always was to bring in a genre heavyweight, and now they’ve got one in Bertino.
When I originally broke the story about MGM acquiring the project, I noted that it is a short that sets your teeth on edge but makes you curious about where McLellan will take it from there. (Watch the film below.) Jonathan Glickman and Cassidy Lange will oversee for MGM, and Andy Berman and Kevin Chang will oversee for Misher Films, which produced Carrie for MGM and Screen Gems and is prepping a reboot of The Crow for Relativity. Bertino, who made his feature debut on the hit The Strangers, most recently wrapped writing/directing Mockingbird for Universal and Blumhouse. The scribe is repped by UTA and Jason Sloane. BREAKING: Universal has locked Bryan Bertino to write and direct Mockingbird, a horror thriller. It marks his return to the studio and is the first project he’s directing since he made the low-budget horror hit The Strangers for Rogue Pictures, which grossed $82 million worldwide. The film will be produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse, Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions, and Adrienne Biddle and Bryan Bertino for Unbroken. Scott Bernstein is overseeing for the studio. UTA reps Bertino.
EXCLUSIVE: Universal has completed a pre-holiday acquisition of a spec script written by The Strangers writer/director Bryan Bertino. The project was acquired to be produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, and Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Marc Platt Productions. Bertino and his Unbroken Pictures partner Adrienne Biddle will also be producers. Blum and Platt have term deals at the studio. Blum is producer of the Paranormal Activity films.
I heard about the spec when it was circulated under the title Mockingbird, but at present it is untitled. Like Paranormal Activity, the Bertino spec is based on “found footage.” Bertino is not aboard to direct the film. Blumhouse just wrapped the Rob Zombie-directed Lords of Salem, as well as the Ethan Hawke-starrer Sinister for Summit Entertainment and is producing the ABC series The River. UTA made the deal for Bertino.
EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures just won an auction for Grim Night, a thriller about about a night that happens once a year globally, where people lock themselves at home and fend off the senseless and random attacks by Grims. Deal was in the high six figure against seven-figure range. Unbroken Films partners Bryan Bertino & Adrienne Biddle are partnering with Marc Platt to produce. Bertino directed The Strangers. The script was written by Brandon Bestenheider & Allen Bey, who made their first sale. The duo helped move things along by making a teaser trailer for the spec that was leaked by their Verve reps before the auction began. About six other outlets were interested but Universal moved fastest. Here’s the teaser trailer:
