Chelsea Handler has lined up her next TV gig and it is the one she’d wanted all along — a talk show on Netflix. After months of negotiations and speculation, the streaming service has announced a deal with the comedian that includes a talk show, to launch in early 2016, as well as stand-up special and four docu-comedy specials.
Like her E! late-night show, which will end its seven-tear run on August 26, the Netflix talker will feature Handler’s unfiltered opinions on topics of the day as well as guest interviews. It has not been determined yet what frequency the show will be released with — daily, weekly or in between — with Netflix only noting that it will debut simultaneously in all Netflix territories. “The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late-night part….” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. That means that Netflix’s model of delivering content on demand and not tied to a time period has rendered the late-night label for Handler’s talk show obsolete.
In Handler’s now infamous Howard Stern Show radio interview in March, in which she called E! “a sad, sad place to live” and “a failure,” Handler suggested that after she leaves the cable network she would be interested in going to an outlet like …
It is officially the end for Chelsea Handler‘s late-night run on E!. The network, which had kept quiet amidst the frenzy of speculation that Handler would be leaving, fueled by the host’s own comments, announced today that Handler’s Chelsea Lately will air a live hourlong series finale on August 26. Handler’s last telecast will be preceded by a month-long farewell highlighting the show’s seven-year run.“We are very proud of Chelsea Lately’s long-running success and the unique space that the series carved out in late night television,” said E! president Suzanne Kolb. “Chelsea brought a distinct voice to late night with her acerbic wit and fearless commentary and we look forward to providing fans with a memorable send-off that lives up to that tradition.” The end of Chelsea Lately will come a few months before Handler’s contract expires at the end of the year. “I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years,” said Handler. “I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.”
Chelsea Lately was developed and launched by the previous E! regime led by Ted Harbert when the network was part of Comcast. Chelsea Lately‘s ratings have slid lately. Between 2010, the year before her last renegotiation with E!, and 2013, the show’s viewership has dropped 32% to 572,000, with the declines extending into 2014.
E! has extended its overall deal with one of the network’s top personalities, Giuliana Rancic, for two more years, through April 2016. As part of the agreement, Rancic will continue as anchor and managing editor of E! News. Additionally, she currently hosts E!’s Live From The Red Carpet specials, anchors interview series Beyond Candid With Giuliana; serves as co-host on Fashion Police; and toplines with husband Bill Rancic their long-running reality show Giuliana & Bill, which originated on E! sibling Style. “Giuliana has been an important part of the E! family for twelve years now and we are thrilled to extend her overall deal with the network,” said Cyndi McClellan, President, Network Strategy & E! News. “Giuliana brings not only a wealth of experience to the air, but also a fun, relatable and candid energy that makes her a fan favorite amongst E! viewers and incredibly popular across the entertainment community.”
Rancic isn’t the only E! personality whose contract is up this year. That list includes Ryan Seacrest, who has been in talks for a new NBCUniversal deal, and Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler, who has said she plans to depart the network at the end of the year.
From the Interesting Timing department: The same day Craig Ferguson tells his audience he’s leaving The Late Late Show in December, Chelsea Handler turns up a guest on TBS’ Conan. There’s been no shortage of chatter about what the future holds for the soon-to-be-former host of E!’s Chelsea Lately. Several days ago on Ellen, Handler ended her teasing about a CBS late-night gig, saying she “would never be on a regular network”. And when Conan O’Brien mentions the scuttlebutt about Handler being close to signing to do a Netflix show, she retorts, “Everything that’s been printed about me is a lie.” Later, in something of a backpedal/attention getter, she adds, “Everything’s an option, honestly.” But O’Brien gets the last laugh in this clip — literally. Have a look:
Chelsea Handler is no longer a part of the CBS late-night conversation, the comic having finished her deft manipulation of the media by announcing, “I would never go to CBS.” ”My mouth? What would they do with me there?” she told Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen’s talk show Wednesday, stating the obvious. “I would never be on a regular network. I would never do that to my fans, myself, or the network,” she added. Handler insisted the Instagram photo that she posted this week of her large-ish dog sitting on her lap, in which she’s seen holding papers upside down so that CBS logo could clearly be seen by viewers, was a giant misunderstanding, explaining she doesn’t look at photos before posting them. She’s talking to CBS about something entirely different, she said.
DeGeneres noted the one solid fact in the Handler late-night saga is that she has said she is ending her Chelsea Lately on E!. “Is that your choice?” Ellen asked. ”Well…..yeah,” Handler said, adding that she thinks it’s time to move on because she wants a vacation and some sleep.
Ellen asked Handler about the Comedy Central opening that will be created when Stephen Colbert leaves to replace David Letterman on CBS. “What is Comedy Central?” Handler snarked, adding, “I don’t want to take a job that somebody else has already done.”
While the current crop of late night hosts have displayed total man love for one another, it gets testier when you go descend down the talk show food chain. You have to watch this clip when E’s Chelsea Handler guested on Piers Morgan. Though a talk show host herself, she proved a nightmare guest for Morgan, who had to go as far as serving up George Zimmerman at an autograph signing to find something they actually agreed upon. She got pissed he was texting during commercials and ignoring her. Morgan, who has clashed with Handler before, later said he was checking soccer game scores. I was racking my brain trying to figure out the last time I saw such a combative interview subject and then it came to me. It was Nathan Thurm. See below:
EXCLUSIVE: Another female Chelsea Lately regular is branching out on her own with Chelsea Handler‘s support. In a competitive situation, FX has landed Jen, a half-hour comedy executive produced, written by and starring Jen Kirkman, and executive produced by Handler. Set in Boston, the project centers on newly divorced Jen (Kirkman), a woman in her mid-30s who doesn’t want kids and once always did things the way you were supposed to but is now following her gut. Kirkman is executive producing with Borderline Amazing’s Handler, Tom Brunelle, and Brad Wollack. Kara Baker of Avalon Management serves as producer. Comedian Kirkman, repped by CAA and Avalon Managemrnt, is a writer and regular roundtable guest on Chelsea Lately and one of the stars of spinoff mockumentary show, After Lately. She has a weekly podcast called I Seem Fun: The Diary Of Jen Kirkman and just inked her second book deal with Simon & Schuster, a follow-up to her best-seller I Can Barely Take Care of Myself. Previous comedy projects of Chelsea Lately regulars backed by CAA-repped Borderline Amazing include half-hours with Fortune Feimster and Heather McDonald.
Until now Irving Azoff has served in an unofficial advisory capacity for Chelsea Handler – now he’ll get paid for his work. In addition to guiding Handler’s personal brand, Azoff will serve as a key adviser to Borderline Amazing Productions, the production outfit she operates with Chelsea Lately EP, Tom Brunelle, and Co-EP, Brad Wollack. The host of E!’s top-rated late night talker Chelsea Lately, Handler is positioning herself for life after her current contract expires at the end of 2014. “I have many more things I want to achieve – in addition to my nightly show, of course. I’ve known Irving for a while – actually, since he auditioned for Chuy’s job”. (Chuy Bravo is Handler’s assistant on Chelsea Lately). “I know he’s primarily a music manager, so just to stop the rumors before they start… I won’t be dropping an album”, Handler said in a release. Azoff added, “She is an original and there’s no one else like her in comedy and on television. She can be a total bitch, but I’ve dealt with a lot of those before. Chelsea is damn good at what she does and has an undeniably strong brand. She and the guys have exciting ideas for the future of her career and production company. My goal is to assist them in facilitating and realizing their vision.”
NBCU considered this “such a minor move” that it didn’t even think it was worth announcing. Wow, what a diss of NBC Broadcasting Chairman Ted Harbert, who has been in the Witness Protection Program ever since Comcast bought NBCUniversal. And when the pint-sized putz isn’t hiding from angry O&Os and affiliates and advertisers fed up with yet another lousy network primetime season, he’s screaming at reporters who didn’t share his belief that Animal Practice would be a homerun this season. (Media 1, Ted 0.) In actuality the only impetus for handing Harbert an infinitesimal new late night role is the multimillion-dollar remodeling of the 30 Rock studio that will house The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon when it moves to New York. Harbert is NYC-based and in charge of NBC’s buildings, so he was tapped. (Was Kenneth Parcell too busy?) Let me emphasize there is no change in the late-night reporting structure, still overseen by Paul Telegdy, president of alternative programming and late night and who reports to NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. (Meanwhile, Greenblatt and Harbert hate each other.) With Telegdy focused on NBC’s top-rated series The Voice, which tapes in LA, he has little time for frequent bicoastal trips. So the underemployed Harbert is Telegdy’s new gofer on 3 NYC shows now: The Tonight Show, Late Show and Saturday Night Live. Harbert in the late night realm is best known for when he was E! Entertainment chief …
Sometimes latenight TV hosts have all the fun. Last night on E!’s Chelsea Lately, CNN’s Piers Morgan was a guest on Chelsea Handler’s show. It began something like this. Handler asked Morgan “What are you looking at?” To which Morgan replied “Well, you’ve either had plastic surgery or makeup because you look really hot today.” Handler’s rejoinder: “You’re so obnoxious, you wonder why everybody hates you”. Chelsea Handler is backing another young female comedy performer trying to get her own series. ABC has put in development Discounted, a half-hour comedy executive produced by Handler that is co-written by and stars Fortune Feimster, a series regular and writer on Handler’s E! talk show Chelsea Lately.
EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea Handler has teamed with comedian Heather McDonald, writer and performer on her E! talk show Chelsea Lately, for a comedy based on McDonald’s upcoming book My Inappropriate Life. McDonald is set to star in the single-camera project, which has sold to Fox. It reunites the production entities behind Handler’s NBC comedy Are You There, Chelsea? — Warner Bros TV, studio-based Werner Entertainment and Handler and Tom Brunelle’s Borderline Amazing.
Co-written by McDonald and Dava Savel (Will & Grace), My Inappropriate Life chronicles McDonald’s experience with a stay-at-home husband, two boys and a half-Asian stepdaughter. Tom Werner, Mike Clements, Handler, Brunelle and Savel executive produce, with McDonald co-executive producing. McDonald, who has been on Chelsea Lately since its 2007 launch and also appears on spinoff After Lately, is with WME and ROAR. Borderline Amazing is with CAA; Savel is with APA.
EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea Handler is helping another female comedy performer break into television. Handler and Tom Brunelle’s Borderline Amazing Prods. has sold a comedy project to NBC created by and starring Ingrid Haas (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Based on Haas’ real life, the relationship comedy centers around a father and daughter. When Ingrid’s parents come to visit her in Los Angeles, she accidentally breaks up their marriage, forcing Ingrid’s dad, Wayne, to move in with her and her roommate in their Melrose Place-style apartment building. Handler, Brunelle, and Chelsea Lately co-executive producer Brad Wollack will Executive Produce and supervise Haas’ script. Universal TV is producing the project, which stems from the rich new overall deal Handler inked with E! late last year, which includes a first-look pact for her company with NBC Universal. Last season, CAA-repped Borderline Amazing, which is behind both Chelsea Lately and After lately on E!, produced the NBC comedy Are You There, Chelsea?
Haas, repped by CAA and Mosaic, is a classically trained Canadian actress who performed Shakespearean Theatre before switching to comedy. Since moving to the US, she performs regularly at the UCB theatre and is a contributor to Hellogiggles.com. She recently did Michael Kosta’s Comedy Central pilot and Craig Robinson’s VH1 pilot.
EXCLUSIVE: I have learned that E! is finalizing a deal for a third-season renewal of After Lately, the offshoot from the network’s successful late-night talk show Chelsea Lately. The pickup will likely be announced Monday at E!’s upfront presentation. Chelsea Lately has already been renewed through 2014 as part of the new rich deal Chelsea Handler signed with E! in November. Handler, along with her Borderline Amazing Prods partner Tom Brunelle, serve as executive producers on both Chelsea Lately and After Lately. The second-season finale of After Lately in January, which featured appearances by Jennifer Aniston, Jay Leno and Jane Fonda, drew the series’ largest audience ever, 1.7 million total viewers. Overall, Season 2 of the comedy late-night show, whose guests also have included Reese Witherspoon, averaged 1.1 million total viewers, up 33% from Season 1.

There was some playfully feigned confusion this afternoon as to who the star of the new NBC multicamera sitcom Are You There, Chelsea? is. Chelsea Handler, on whose bestselling memoir Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea the show is based, is featured prominently in the promos for the series, which premieres later this month. Are You There, Chelsea? centers on a twentysomething bad-girl version of Handler who is played by Laura Prepon while Handler appears in seven of the 13 episodes as her Born-Again Christian sister. Handler, who executive produces the series, was quick to set the record straight. “We want people to know that I’m part of the show but that this is the star of the show,” Handler said, motioning to Prepon. She stressed that any advertising for the show should be crystal clear. “We don’t want anyone to get confused or think I’m the star… It’s a lot more fun for me to play my sister than it would be to play myself. (Handler has a sister in real life). It’s a lot more challenging … But it’s Laura’s show ultimately… I’d love to be in it as often as possible, but I seriously don’t have the time. I like my E! show, I like being under the radar.” The last comment evoked some groans as it came out as a jab at the cable network.
Fox Buys Single Dad Comedy Produced By Chelsea Handler, Mary McCormack & Spike Feresten And Starring Comedian Josh Wolf
EXCLUSIVE: Fox has bought a single-camera comedy project starring comedian Josh Wolf, regular panelist on Chelsea Handler’s E! late-night talk show Chelsea Lately. Wolf will co-write the show with Seinfeld alum Spike Feresten and Michael Morris (Brothers & Sisters), with Chelsea Handler and her friend, In Plain Sight star Mary McCormack, who is married to Morris, executive producing. Also executive producing are Feresten and Handler’s producing partner at Borderline Amazing Tom Brunelle. Morris, Wolf and Brad Wollack will co-executive produce. The comedy, set up at 20th Century Fox TV, is based on Wolf’s early years as a single father of three and a full-time stand-up comic. Wolf is with Parallel Entertainment, Feresten with 3 Arts, Handler, Brunelle & Wollack with CAA, and Morris & McCormack with Gersh.
After lengthy negotiations, E! has signed signature star Chelsea Handler in a rich new two-year deal. Under the pact, which I hear is worth $25 million, Handler will continue as host and executive producer of her E! late-night talk show Chelsea Lately though 2014. (The comedian’s previous contract covers her services on the show through 2012.) She will also develop and produce shows via her production company, Borderline Amazing Prods, which will have a first-look deal with E! and NBCUniversal.
Since Chelsea Lately’s July 2007 launch, it has grown into a formidable late-night talk show franchise, reigning as the highest-rated and most-watched late-night talker among women 18-34. The series recently delivered its highest-rated and most-watched telecast ever on October 10, averaging nearly 1.8 million total viewers at 11 PM. Chelsea Lately also spawned an off-shoot, the Borderline Amazing-produced After Lately, which returns for a second season November 27. “Chelsea is an extraordinary talent whose smart, clever, no-holds-barred point of view has clearly been embraced by viewers,” said Suzanne Kolb, President, E! “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Chelsea as we build on the success of Chelsea Lately, which has become the late-night destination for young adults, and collaborate with Borderline Amazing Prods on developing even more hit shows.” Added Handler, “It’s a great time for women …
EXCLUSIVE: Viacom’s Logo network is set to unveil a development slate the includes four new projects designed to continue expanding the channel’s appeal.
