TCA: ‘Cristela’ Hopes To Reach Broader Audience Among Lean ABC OfferingsThere’s been a lot of talk about diversity at ABC’s TCA panels today, yet the network’s shows have all shared one constant: Virtually all their stars are thin. But after the panel on her new multi-camera comedy Cristela, stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo, the show’s co-creator and executive producer, said she’s happy to represent the majority: People of average weight.
Alonzo was wearing a black Fitbit bracelet and said she plans to wear it on the show, in which she portrays an aspiring lawyer who moves back in with her family to pursue that goal. “You see all these shows that have thin people and you never see them eat, you never see them go to the gym,” she said. “Well, I eat. This is what America looks like. This is it.”

carmichaelalonzoLost among the slew of high-profile broadcast comedy pilots this season were two low-budget pilots/presentations created by and starring up-and-coming comedians of diverse background few had heard of: Cristela Alonzo and Jerrod Carmichael. Ten days before the start of the upfronts, many of those big-budget, big-name pilots have fallen by the wayside. But the Alonzo and Carmichael projects are still standing. Both have exceeded expectations, both have been very well received and both are in contention for a series pickup.

Upfronts2014_badgeAlonzo’s semi-autobiographical Cristela, from 20th TV and studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein, has been a true Cinderella story. It was sold to ABC last summer with penalty. But with several high-profile multi-camera sitcoms landing pilot orders at the network, including two from 20th TV – The Winklers starring Henry Winkler, and the untitled Kevin Hart project – Cristela didn’t make the cut. Cristela Alonzo Latina Comedy From 20th Century Fox TV Gets ABC Order

Cristela Alonzo ABC PilotEXCLUSIVE: Cristela, the semi-autobiographical multi-camera comedy co-created by and starring rising stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo, remains in fall contention at ABC. The network, which originally bought the 20th TV-backed comedy in August with a sizable penalty, has greenlighted what it calls “proof of concept” for the project, which has fans among ABC top brass. On the breakdown for Cristela released today, it is listed as a pilot presentation with John Pasquin directing a cast of 10, led by Alonzo. The show, co-written by Alonzo and Kevin Hench, tells the story of Cristela (Alonzo), an American Latina straddling two cultures while not fully belonging to either. Cristela, in her sixth year of law school and living rent-free with her sister and brother-in-law, hopes to land a prestigious law firm internship as her mother hectors her about getting a real job, her brother-in-law encourages her to move out and her sister runs low on patience. 20th TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps/Adelstein produce, with Alonzo, Hench, Adelstein, Levy and Becky Clements executive producing.
