Charley Koontz Cast As Regular In ‘CSI: Cyber’EXCLUSIVE: Community‘s Charley Koontz has landed his first series regular gig, a co-starring role opposite Patricia Arquette in CBS’ upcoming CSI spinoff, CSI: Cyber. Inspired by the work of real-life CyberPsychologist Mary Aiken, CSI: Cyber centers on Special Agent Avery Ryan (Arquette) who heads the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI, a unit at the forefront of solving illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world. The project originated as CSICyberplanted spinoff episodes on CSI last season, which only featured Arquette. The rest of the series’ cast is currently being assembled, with Koontz as the first actor locked in. Koontz plays Agent Daniel Grummitz with the Cyber Crime Division — a social introvert and a tech genius with a quick wit and self-deprecating honesty. Workaholic by day and night, Grumitz rarely, if ever, goes home. Indeed, he spends countless hours cracking cyber cases while on the clock. Off the clock, he practices penetration tests on Conficker clones. csicyber1While Koontz has an occasional drama credit, including playing a rape/murder suspect in an episode of NBC’s Awake, the young actor is known mostly for his comedic chops, as showcased in his recurring role as (Fat) Neil on Community. Like most CBS procedurals, CSI: Cyber, created by Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony Zuiker and Ann Donahue, is expected to feature lighter moments, with Koontz likely to provide some of them.  … Read More »

CBS Picks Up ‘CSI: Cyber’ To Series

csi april 30The planted CSI spinoff will join offshoot NCIS: New Orleans on the CBS schedule next season. CSI: Cyber was not on the list of four drama pilots picked up to series by CBS earlier today but as we reported, the project was in final negotiations for a pickup, which now has become a reality. I had heard that CBS would likely not launch the NCIS and CSI spinoffs at the same time, with NCIS: New Orleans more likely for fall and CSI: Cyber for midseason. Written-executive produced by the CSI team of Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony Zuiker and Ann Donahue, CSI: Cyber stars Patricia Arquette as Avery Ryan, Special Agent in Charge at the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI in Quantico, VA, who is tasked with solving major crimes that start in the mind, live online, and play out into the real world. The planted spinoff aired recently as an episode of CSI to a great response. It is a departure from the forensic DNA of the CSI franchise and is darker as it focuses on cyber crime.  Another CSI veteran, former CSI: NY showrunner Pam Veasey, is expected to run the new series. Mendelsohn will continue to be in charge of the mothership series as she has been since the beginning. The pickup marks Arquette’s return to primetime at the network where she last starred in Medium.

arquettePatricia Arquette, who won an Emmy for Medium, is set as the lead of another crime drama procedural, CBS’ planted CSI spinoff. Written by the CSI franchise team of Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony E. Zuiker and Ann Donahue, the untitled spinoff (aka CSI Cyber) centers on Avery Ryan (Arquette), Special Agent in Charge at the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI in Quantico, VA, who is tasked with solving high-octane crimes that start in the mind, live online, and play out into the real world. The project, inspired by Irish Cyberpsychologist Mary Aiken, would be the first CSI series with a female lead. Avery will be introduced in a CSI episode this spring. Mendelsohn, Zuiker and Donahue exec produce with Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman for CBS TV Studios and Bruckheimer TV. Arquette, repped by Gersh, 3 Arts and Ziffren Brittenham, recently completed the feature The Wanna Be and HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire, both produced by Martin Scorsese. She will next be seen in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood.
