CBS Daytime Show ‘The Talk’ Debuts OK

Nellie Andreeva

It is tricky to evaluate the ratings performance of CBS’ new daytime talk show The Talk as it doesn’t air against other network talk shows and it doesn’t run at the same time in every market (in most, it airs at 2 PM.) But in its debut yesterday, the show hosted by Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Leah Remini averaged an OK 2.1/7 rating in the metered markets. That was up 24% from what the network did in the time slot a year ago with recently cancelled soap As the World Turns. It virtually tied the established network competition at 2 PM, soap One Life to Live, which did a 2.2. Ratings are important for The Talk because, as Chen’s husband, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves pointed out in his Good Luck video played during the premiere episode, if they’re are not good, he will cancel it. (Moonves’ message is at the end of the clip from The Talk below.) Read More »

‘View’ Co-Hosts Discuss O’Reilly Walk-Off

Nellie Andreeva

A lot calmer View co-hosts spent 4 minutes today reminiscing about Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg’s infamous walk-off during the interview with Bill O’Reilly on Thursday. “On this show, we all talk about standing up to bigotry, so I stood out,” was Behar’s comment. “I hit my saturation point… I … Read More »

Joy Behar & Bill O’Reilly Talk ‘View’ Spat

Nellie Andreeva

Both Joy Behar and Bill O’Reilly have primetime talk shows and used them last night to comment on the heated exchange during O’Reilly’s visit to The View yesterday that resulted in co-hosts Behar and Whoopi  Goldberg walking off the stage. Behar stayed on a war path, saying that O’Reilly “had a real pinhead moment” and attacking his position on the Ground Zero mosque in an interview with Jesse Ventura on her eponymous HLN show. Meanwhile, O’Reilly was surprisingly subdued on Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor, playing a long clip from The View followed by a short statement that ended with “I loved that exposition today. Didn’t you?” There will be more dissection of the incident on Monday’s edition of The View, ABC just announced. Why, this couldn’t be a ratings ploy, could it? (Today’s edition of the chat show was pre-taped): Read More »

It’s Official: Anderson Cooper To Host Warner Bros TV-Syndicated Daily Daytime Strip But Also His CNN News Show

Anderson Cooper has signed a deal to host a new one-hour NYC-based daily daytime strip for Warner Bros Domestic Television Distribution, set for national syndication launch in Fall 2011. This should be very successful: one week, I caught Cooper co-hosting with Kelly Ripa — and he was a natural. Cooper will continue to anchor CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ airing weeknights at 10 PM ET. And, geez, is troubled CNN relieved he’s staying even though his ratings have plummeted. Luckily, both CNN and Warner Bros TV syndication sit under the same Time Warner banner. Said Jim Walton, the president of CNN Worldwide, “I am pleased that Anderson Cooper has extended his relationship with CNN and will be with us for years to come. I am also pleased to congratulate Anderson on his new relationship with Telepictures. We think it will be good for Anderson, good for CNN and good for Time Warner.”  And Cooper had this to say, “I remain as committed as ever to my program on CNN, and will be with CNN for years to come.” Here’s the news release: Read More »

Oprah’s OWN Picks Up Rosie Daytime Talk

Nellie Andreeva

Four months ago, Rosie O’Donnell, who hosted the syndicated The Rosie O’Donnell Show and did a stint on ABC’s The View, teamed with syndication veterans Dick Robertson and Scott Carlin for a new syndicated daytime talk show. Now they have found a buyer, Oprah Winfrey’s upstart cable network OWN, a co-venture with Discovery Communications. Interesting move by Winfrey, who once competed with O’Donnell for the title of daytime talk show queen at the height of The Rosie O’Donnell Show in the late 1990s.

O’Donnell is a polarizing figure with strong political views and aggressive style who had previously indicated that she planned to stay true to herself on her new show. So giving her a daily talker on OWN, a network built on the premise of inspiring women and helping them better their lives, is somewhat surprising. But the description of the new show supplied by OWN seems to indicate that there will be more of the 1990s “queen of nice” bubbly persona than the darker, more controversial O’Donnell we’ve seen in the final stage of her daytime talk show, on The View as well as on her radio show on Sirius XM. TCA: ‘The Talk’ Panel Talks Sara Gilbert’s Sexual Orientation & Julie Chen’s Marriage

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage:

The discussion at the panel for CBS’ new daytime talk show The Talk– featuring  the six co-hosts, executive producer Sara Gilbert, Leah Remini, Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Sharon Osbourne – seemed to focus mostly on the fact that Gilbert is a lesbian, particularly, a lesbian who failed to acknowledge her partner and co-parent in the press materials for the new show, even though the other women’s husbands were mentioned. Another question that has been raising a lot more controversy received far less attention: the fact that co-host Chen – who already has two high profile jobs as co anchor of CBS’ “Early Show” and the U.S. version of “Big Brother” — is  married to Les Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corp.
