WB’s first Dolphin Tale hit #1 at the 2011 box office and squeaked in a cool $95M worldwide. Why not double down on the dolphin drama? Here’s the new trailer for sequel Dolphin Tale 2, which returns original cast members Harry Connick, Jr., Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, Austin Stowell, and Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail, playing herself. They’re joined by surfer Bethany Hamilton and neophyte Delphinidae diva Hope, who also plays herself as the potential new lady companion whose arrival at Florida’s Clearwater Marine Aquarium might save Winter from being sent to a new aquatic home.
Charles Martin Smith is back at the helm as writer-director. Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson (The Blind Side) are producers alongside Alcon’s Richard Ingber. Pic swims into theaters September 12; how big a box office splash will it make opposite Sony’s Idris Elba-Taraji P. Henson home invasion thriller No Good Deed and Universal comedy Search Party, starring T.J. Miller? Check out the trailer: Read More »
Call this Episode 2: A New Hope. Warner Bros had to be taken aback a bit by the feel-good box office for its feel-good family pic Dolphin Tale, which hit No. 1 in its second weekend back in 2011 and finished with $95 million-plus worldwide. Alcon Entertainment dips its toe in the waters again for Dolphin Tale 2, which follows the inspired-by-a-true-story of Hope, a young dolphin who is saved with the help of the good people from the first movie — namely Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, Kris Kristofferson, Morgan Freeman and Austin Stowell. Bethany Hamilton, the young shark-bite survivor who inspired the feel-good (there’s that phrase again) movie Soul Surfer, also has a role. The pic from returning director Charles Martin Smith, who also wrote this installment, comes up for air September 19. Here’s the trailer:
Bethany Hamilton, the subject of the 2011 feature Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, is getting into the acting business herself. She will join the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s Dolphin Tale 2, the sequel to 2011′s Dolphin Tale, which grossed almost $100 million worldwide. Warner Bros has already set a September 19 release for the follow-up. Alcon Entertainment is back for the sequel as are Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd, and Kris Kristofferson. Charles Martin Smith will direct again, and real-life rescued dolphin Hope will portray herself. So will Hamilton, who has become a source of inspiration to millions after she was bitten at age 13 by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai’s North Shore, severing her left arm. She was back in the water a month after the attack and went on to win a national title, and eventually became a pro surfer. Her story of faith and determination spawned the book Soul Surfer, on which the movie was based. Dolphin Tale 2 is shooting now in Florida.
