The Bible producer Mark Burnett has partnered with director Robert Rodriguez‘s El Rey Network to being Lucha Libre wrestling, and a new league, to the U.S. The business begins with a weekly one-hour series featuring a new Lucha Libre AAA league, premiering on El Rey Network the second half of 2014, El Rey vice chairman Scott Sassa announced this morning at Winter TV Press Tour 2014.
Burnett’s One Three Media is partnering with the leading lucha libre league in Mexico, Lucha Libre AAA, and FactoryMade Ventures. Also joining, through their interests in Lucha Libre AAA, are Antonio Cue Sanchez-Navarro and Latinoamerica’s largest production group, Alex Garcia’s AG Studios.
“I’m at the point in my career where I could probably try anything. I’ve earned that right,” Burnett told TV critics at Summer TV Press Tour 2014. “This is building a bona fide sport within America. Clearly the Hispanic culture is really growing (here),” he said, noting it’s the No. 2 most popular sport in Mexico, behind only soccer. “Why wouldn’t you bring Mexico’s No. 2 sport to America? Robert Patrick, Madison Davenport, Brandon Soo Hoo and Eiza González are the latest to join the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Shooting is underway in Austin, TX on the 10-episode serialized drama based on the cult horror film by Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. González re-creates the role of Santánico Pandemonium; Patrick portrays Jacob Fuller, father to Kate Fuller (Davenport) and Scott Fuller (Soo Hoo), who are held hostage by main characters Seth and Richie Gecko, and find themselves along for the ride of their life. UPDATE, 12:45 PM: El Rey just officially announced the production start and main cast of From Dusk Till Dawn. Also joining the series as a recurring is Don Johnson who will take on the role of Sheriff Earl McGraw, played by Michael Parks in the movie.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, 10:15 AM: DJ Cotrona, Zane Holtz and Jesse Garcia are set to star in English-language network El Rey’s first original series, the 10-episode From Dusk Til Dawn, based on the cult horror movie by El Rey’s Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. Like the movie, the El Rey/FactoryMade-produced series centers on career criminal Seth Gecko (Cotrona) and his older, seriously unstable brother Richie (Holtz). The roles were played in the film by George Clooney and Tarantino, respectively. Garcia plays Freddie, a new character created for the series — a Texas Ranger who sets out in pursuit of the infamous Gecko brothers. Rodriguez wrote and is directing the first two episodes. He is exec producing with Carlos Coto, who serves as showrunner, and El Rey’s John Fogelman and Christina Patwa. Filming has started this week in Austin.
