mcgunnigle1After an exhaustive search, Canadian actress/writer Stacey McGunnigle has been cast in the title role of NBC’s pilot Ellen More Or Less, written/exec produced by JJ Philbin, directed by Peyton Reed and exec produced by Jason Katims and Michelle Lee. The single-camera comedy, from Universal TV and Katims’ True Jack Prods., centers on Ellen (McGunnigle), an average-size woman who, after losing 100 pounds, begins reinventing herself in life and love. This marks the US TV debut of McGunnigle, making her one of the discoveries of this pilot season. She landed the role after wowing NBC brass with her screen test, possibly aided by the fact that  Ellen mirrors her real-life story of a “former fat girl.” McGunnigle, who has only a couple of screen credits in her native Canada, is a member of Toronto’s famous Second City comedy troupe and is probably best known for her online video series Stacey Helps and her contributor posts on the female-centric site HelloGiggles. She is with ICM Partners and Principato-Young.

UPDATE: NBC Picks Up Comedy Pilots From Dan Mazer & Tom Werner, Gary Sanchez Prods, And JJ Philbin & Jason Katims

philbin2ND UPDATE, 4:40 PM: Here is NBC‘s third and final comedy pilot order of the day for Ellen More Or Less (previously Formerly Fat Girl), written by JJ Philbin and executive produced by Jason Katims, who is behind NBC’s new comedy series About A Boy. The single-camera, from Universal TV and Katims’ True Jack Prods, is loosely based on the nonfiction book 10 Lessons From A Former Fat Girl and centers on an average-size woman who, after losing 100 pounds, begins reinventing herself in life and love. NBC gave the project, executive produced by Philbin, Katims and Michelle Lee a pilot production commitment in September. The pickup means that both high-profile single-camera comedy projects this season about a formerly fat protagonist have gotten a green light — Fox recently ordered Fatrick, which is already casting. For those counting at home, NBC has picked up 7 comedy pilots so far, plus series orders to the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock project and Mr. Robinson.

davidhornsbyUPDATE, 4:18 PM: NBC has also picked up to pilot Mission Control, a Universal TV-produced comedy from studio-based Gary Sanchez Productions and executive producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell. How To Be A Gentleman creator-star David Hornsby wrote and exec produces the pilot, a workplace ensemble said to be in the tone of Anchorman. Set in 1962, it examines what happens when a strong woman butts heads with a macho astronaut in the race to land on the moon. Read More »
