EXCLUSIVE: As The New Republic turns 100 years old, Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have made a pre-emptive acquisition of “The Year Of The Pigskin,” a just-published feature by Christopher Beam about the unlikely success of the Chongqing Dockers, one of the first teams in the very first American football league to form in China. The catalyst was a 26-year-old American, the son of police detectives whose pro football dreams were dashed after a shoulder injury incurred while he was a star player at the University of Michigan. He became the team’s coach and star player. The feature is a template for a Bad News Bears-like film that will be shot in China, as the Dockers and its players with names like Fat Baby, Bobo, and Weezy get molded from undisciplined players afraid to hit one another into a group of warriors that battled for the championship against archrival Shanghai Warriors.

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled pitch from Kate Angelo. Escape Artists‘ Steve Tisch, Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal will produce, with Hannah Minghella overseeing for the studio. Both Sony and Escape Artists completed the Angelo-scripted Sex Tape with Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, which Sony releases July 25. Jake Kasdan directed. They are keeping Angelo’s new pitch under wraps, but it’s a female-driven road-trip comedy involving three best friends. Interesting note on Sex Tape: There has been suspicion that the film was going to be retitled Basic Math. That’s not the case. The production crew used that as the working title because it was hard to get locations to shoot the comedy with the other title, for reasons that are self-evident. UTA and David Fox rep Angelo.
Talks are just getting underway with Chu, who is in the middle of a 3D conversion on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is preparing to shoot a couple of new scenes for the film, which was pushed to a March 29, 2013 release by Paramount. The Masters film revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor.
EXCLUSIVE: Lucy Alibar, co-writer of Beasts Of The Southern Wild, has closed a deal to write her next screenplay for Escape Artists. It is an original idea that is inspired by Alibar’s play, Christmas and Jubilee Behold the Meteor Shower. Alibar co-wrote Beasts Of The Southern Wild with Behn Zeitlin, which is based on her original play Juicy and Delicious. The film won this year’s Sundance’s Narrative Grand Jury prize. Fox Searchlight acquired the film at that festival and screened it tonight and received a rousing response at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard.
“This is the first time in many years that I have met such a young, unique and fresh voice and we are very excited to be working with Lucy” said Todd Black from Escape Artists.
Alibar is repped by Gersh and Dan Halsted at Manage-ment.
