There is nothing more precious for a show creator in this day and age than the trust and the full creative support of a TV network. At the Awardsline screening for Lifetime‘s Devious Maids Monday night, creator Marc Cherry revealed one kinky scene the network let him get away with.
EXCLUSIVE: Blumhouse horror pic Visions has added another TV name to its cast. Eva Longoria will join Isla Fisher, Anson Mount, and Community‘s Gillian Jacobs in the film which also has The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons in talks to co-star. Fisher stars as a pregnant woman who moves with her husband to the countryside where she is plagued by visions of a sinister hooded figure. Longoria will play Fisher’s fashionable, acerbic and funny city gal pal who disapproves of her friend’s life choices. Visions is directed by Kevin Greutert from a script by Lucas Sussman. Universal is set to distribute the Jason Blum-produced pic as the latest in the companies’ fruitful microbudget genre collaborations while Blumhouse International is repping rights at the Berlin Film Festival. Meanwhile Longoria directed Episode 1 of Lifetime’s Devious Maids, the Marc Cherry dramedy she’s an exec producer on which returns for its second season on April 20. On the big screen she’s also set to star in upcoming pics Frontera with Michael Pena and Ed Harris, Refugio from Damian Bichir, and Any Day opposite Sean Bean and Kate Walsh. Longoria is repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman.
TCA: ‘Devious Maids’ Returning On April 20; Eva Longoria To Make Directorial Debut In Season 2 Opener
PASADENA, CA (January 9, 2014) – Lifetime’s critically-acclaimed hit series Devious Maids (#DeviousMaids, #DeviousArmy), returns for a second season on Sunday, April 20, at 10PM ET/PT. The series is executive produced by Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria, and stars Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramírez, Roselyn Sánchez, Edy Ganem and Judy Reyes as five maids with ambition and dreams of their own while working for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Longoria will direct the series’ eagerly anticipated season two opener, marking her television directorial debut.
Eva Longoria‘s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment has set up two more projects – a comedy at NBC and drama at Lifetime. The NBC project stars rising comedian Erik Rivera and is based on his life and standup. Comedy veteran Peter Murrieta will write the script and will executive produce with Scott Ellis, who is set to direct, and UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector. The project stems from a deal UnbeliEVAble made with Rivera earlier this year to develop a vehicle based on his comedy. The setup is reminiscent of ABC’s The George Lopez Show, which also started with a well known actress, Sandra Bullock, championing a Latino comedian on the rise, Lopez, and partnering him with an established sitcom showrunner, Bruce Helford, for a comedy project starring Lopez and based on his standup. Rivera, repped by Ray Hughes Management and Loan Dang, is a familiar face to NBC brass — he was selected for the network’s Stand Up For Diversity college tour. Murrieta is with CAA and David Miner; Ellis with CAA.
The Lifetime drama, titled Blackout, is a small town soap written by Elle Triedman (Revenge). It centers on a woman whose failed career leads her to return home after 10 years to the small blue collar town run by her estranged siblings. She tries to make amends with her family and her …
EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation with both broadcast and cable networks pursuing, Real Deal, a drama project produced by Eva Longoria and Conde Nast Entertainment, has landed at CBS with penalty. The project, based on a 2005 Glamour article (read it here), marks the first broadcast sale for Conde Nast. Written by Burn Notice veteran Craig O’Neill, Real Deal centers on two polar opposite women — an ambitious FBI agent and an uncontrollable criminal Confidential Informant — who must find common ground if they’re going to survive both the streets of Los Angeles and each other. CBS TV Studios is producing, with O’Neill executive producing alongside UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector and Conde Nast’s Dawn Ostroff. The article, “The FBI’s Secret Weapon: Women” by Emily Benedek, centers on the heroic exploits of FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer as an example of the benefit of women in the agency’s ranks.
Deadline revealed back in April that A Better Life star Demian Bichir was moving toward his feature directing debut on the indie Refugio. He’s set his cast—Eva Longoria, Jose Angel Bichir, and Jorge Perugorria (Strawberries And Chocolate)—and production is just getting underway in Mexico City. The film follows the title character, a young dreamer who’s born in the circus and embarks on a search to find his long lost true love. That character will be played at various points in his life by a series of actors including Demian Bichir himself. The majority of screen time goes to Jose Angel Bichir, who is the director’s nephew. Longoria plays a horse acrobat who joins the circus in Mexico trying to heal a broken heart.
Stefanie Sherk, Ana Claudia Talancon, Arcelia Ramirez and Ludwika Paleta also star, and Julian Fidalgo will play the young Refugio in flashback scenes. The film’s produced by AG Studios’ Alex Garcia, Itaca Films’ Santiago Garcia Galvan, BN Films’ Lucas Akoskin and Escarabajo’s Bruno Bichir (the director’s younger bro). Longoria’s repped by CAA and Brillstein. Bichir, who stars in the FX series The Bridge, opens shortly in the Robert Rodriguez-directed mayhem filled Machete Kills.
There is a legal thread going through the drama development at Eva Longoria‘s UnbeliEVAable Entertainment with a third sale of an hourlong project with legal elements. The project, Vega V. Vega, has landed at NBC. Written/co-executive produced by Laurie Silverstein, the show centers on a brilliant, young, successful lawyer who suddenly finds herself forced to go into a practice with her mother, a pioneering female attorney with whom she has a love/hate relationship. Attorney Elizabeth Bradley, who starred on David E. Kelley’s NBC reality series The Law Firm, serves as producer. Bradley started her legal career in the law firm where her mother was a partner, and the two later launched a successful practice together, Bradley & Bradley, LLP. Vega V. Vega is produced by Warner Bros TV and UnbeliEVAable, with Longoria, George W. Perkins, Sunta Izzicupo and Ben Spector executive producing. This marks CAA-repped UnbeliEVAble’s fourth sale this season. The company also has Trust, an hourlong soap based on the popular Colombian telenovela Pura Sangre, which centers on an attorney, at ABC; a legal/mystery drama at the CW with writer Albert Kim; and a comedy inspired by sex therapist Laura Berman at NBC.
Along with loading up on genre/superhero series, the CW has been looking to launch medical, cop and legal franchises. Beauty & The Beast qualifies as a police drama, and the network tried out medical drama Emily Owens, MD last fall. Now it is teaming with Eva Longoria for a legal drama project that will feature the CW’s signature soapy elements. Written by Nikita co-executive producer Albert Kim, the untitled drama centers on a woman imprisoned for a double murder she didn’t commit who earns her law degree while behind bars, then wins her freedom and joins the high-powered law firm that she believes is at the center of the conspiracy that framed her. Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment is producing with Warner Bros Television. UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector executive produce with Kim. This marks CAA-repped UnbeliEVAble’s third sale this season. The company also has Trust, an hourlong soap based on the popular Colombian telenovela Pura Sangre, and a comedy inspired by sex therapist Laura Berman, both at NBC.
EXCLUSIVE: Desperate Housewives alumna Eva Longoria is returning to ABC for another soapy drama, this time as a producer. ABC has bought Trust, an hourlong soap based on the popular Colombian telenovela Pura Sangre, which is produced by Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, Berman/Braun and Universal TV. Written by Katie Lovejoy (Dracula), Trust centers on David Montenegro, a humble attorney in Miami who is given the chance to become the Trustee of the Lagos estate. David takes the job to try and rekindle a romance with his first and only love, Rosella Lagos – who is now engaged to another man – but before long, he finds himself sucked into her dysfunctional family and discovers that, in a world of so much money, the only true currency is trust. The project stems from UnbeliEVAble’s first-look deal with Uni TV. UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector executive produce with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein.
Produced by RCN Television, Pura Sangre (trailer below) ran for 126 episodes between 2007 and 2008 to strong ratings and award recognition. Written by Mauricio Navas, Conchita Ruiz and Tania Cardenas, it starred Marcela Mar and Rafael Novoa. Its international adaptations include a Mexican version by Televisa. In addition to Trust, CAA-repped UnbeliEVAble has a …
Eva Longoria To Appear On NBC’s ‘Welcome To The Family’ For ‘Desperate Housewives’ Reunion With Ricardo Chavira
EXCLUSIVE: Desperate Housewives alumna Eva Longoria is set to guest star on an episode of NBC’s upcoming comedy series Welcome To The Family, which stars her onscreen husband from the long-running ABC dramedy, Ricardo A Chavira. According to Longoria, Chavira called and asked her to come on the show and she is very excited to be working with him again. The Sony TV-produced series centers on a Caucasian and Latino family forced together by the unplanned pregnancy of their teen kids. Sparks between Longoria and Chavira will fly again as Longoria will play Ms Nunez, the English teacher of Demetrio (Fabrizio Guido) who has a romantic history with the boy’s father Miguel (Chavira) from before he was married.
EXCLUSIVE: NBC has put in development a multi-camera comedy from writer-producers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Made Of Honor), with Eva Longoria attached to executive produce. Inspired by the life of relationship therapist Laura Berman, the untitled project centers on a female sex & relationship therapist who helps patients deal with intimacy, love and unusual fetishes — but that’s nothing compared to navigating the relationships with her ex-husband, his new girlfriend and her own mother, all while raising her two young sons. Universal TV is producing. The comedy falls under the first-look deal Longoria and her UnevliEVAble Entertainment inked with Uni TV last fall. Kaplan, Elfont and Longoria executive produce with UnveliEVAble’s Ben Spector and Freestyle’s Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy. Berman, who has a show on OWN, In the Bedroom With Dr. Laura Berman and is a regular guest on The Dr. Oz Show, serves as a co-exec producer. Kaplan, Elfont and Longoria are with CWW; Berman is with ICM Partners and ROAR.
The initiative makes sense for the upcoming Lifetime drama series, which was created by Desperate Housewives‘ Marc Cherry and counts Eva Longoria among its exec producers. Devious Maids is based on the hit Televisa telenovela Ellas Son La Alegría Del Hogar and centers on five Latina maids (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramírez, Roselyn Sánchez, Edy Ganem and Judy Reyes) with ambition and dreams of their own while working for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills — with murder and intrigue thrown into the mix. The network is making the pilot episode available early on digital platforms beginning Sunday in both English and Spanish. The sneak peak comes ahead of the series’ on-air debut June 23. Following the premiere, Lifetime will make each episode available in both languages the day after its Sunday 10 PM airing. “We are thrilled to work with our distribution partners on making Devious Maids available in both English and Spanish to maximize the show’s crossover appeal among the broadest range of their customers”, said Rob Sharenow, Lifetime’s EVP and General Manager.
Hulu said today during its upfront presentation in New York that it set a revenue record in the first quarter of this year with $695M, and that Hulu Plus subscriptions passed 4 million subscribers after doubling in 2012. The service now has almost 2500 TV series and about 57,000 hours of content. Among the talent on hand was Seth Meyers and Michael Shoemaker to promote their animated superhero series The Awesomes, one of four original series that will debut this year. Among Hulu’s four announced exclusive series is the Eva Longoria-starring animated series Mother Up!, about a disgraced former music exec who must transition to a life of suburban motherhood. Other talent working up shows are Mario Batali, Carson Daly and Jay Mohr, who is toplining the new game show Money Where Your Mouth Is. Hulu also is streaming Prospect Park’s revamped soap operas All My Children and One Life To Live, which launched yesterday and were the two most-watched TV episodes of the day. Here is Hulu’s descriptions of its new series:
On the heels of Eva Longoria‘s collaboration with NBC and Universal Television on the upcoming dating reality series Ready For Love, the actress-producer has signed a first-look development deal with Universal TV for her UnbeliEVAble Entertainment. Under the pact, the Desperate Housewives alumna will serve as a non-writing executive producer on scripted and unscripted projects for the studio.
UPDATE, 5:42 PM: “Let me tell you something, the Eva Longoria who worked at Wendy’s flipping burgers, she needed a tax break but the Eva Longoria who works on movie sets does not,” the former Desperate Housewives star told the delegates in Charlotte to big applause tonight. Besides hitting out at Barack Obama’s GOP rival Mitt Romney and his policies, the campaign co-chair used her just over six minute speech to stress employment opportunity issues. “As I travel the country for the President, I see Americans of every background fighting to succeed. They’re optimistic, they’re ambitious, they’re hardworking but they also want to know that their hard work will pay off,” Longoria said. “We’re lucky that our President understands the value of American opportunity because he’s lived it,” she added to big applause. In a poised partisan and personal biography heavy speech, the long time Obama supporter was a clear contrast, as she promised yesterday to be, to the often rambling appearance by Clint Eastwood at the GOP convention last week.
PREVIOUSLY, 5:19 PM: Eva Longoria has walked on stage at the Democratic National Convention. A co-chair of the President’s reelection campaign, the former Desperate Housewives actress has promised over the past day that she will not be pulling a Clint Eastwood during her turn in the political spotlight. “I come from a very different position than Clint Eastwood,” said the long time Obama …
Eva Longoria says unlike Clint Eastwood she will not be bringing out any empty chairs when she speaks to her party’s convention tomorrow. “People keep comparing us because we are both from the entertainment industry and (sic) he had a very different narrative,” the former Desperate Housewives actress told CNN’s Piers Morgan tonight at the DNC. “I come from a very different position than Clint Eastwood,” said the long time Barack Obama supporter and Latino outreach activist. “It was interesting yeah but I haven’t seen the whole thing so it’s not fair for me to judge it,” Longoria said of Eastwood’s unsuccessful appearance as the surprise speaker at the GOP convention last Thursday in Tampa. Longoria, who is a co-chair of the Obama reelection campaign, is scheduled to speak tomorrow night to the delegates in Charlotte, North Carolina on the subject of Hispanic women and education.
Clint Eastwood’s memorable cameo at the recent Republican National Convention was supposed to be kept secret. But it’s widely known that Obama Campaign Co-Chair Eva Longoria, formerly of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, is scheduled to speak during this week’s Democratic National Convention. After stumping for Obama in 2008, and hosting Florida’s Women’s Summit in early August, the Latina activist will be one of 9 women addressing the convention from the podium in Charlotte. But far less publicized is that Kal Penn will host a portion of the DNC’s official gavel-to-gavel livestream. That’s right, the 35-year-old Harold & Kumar stoner star and one-time Houseregular who also worked on Barack Obama’s first campaign and on his arts policy committee and later in his White House. Now he’s back in the thick of Democratic politics. The Indian-American from New Jersey has been visiting 2012 battleground states drumming up Obama support among young voters. One report claims he’ll take the podium during Tuesday night’s DNC program. But his starring role comes Thursday when he’s hosting a web-only convention special called “Live From Charlotte” starting at 8 PM ET. It will include interviews with campaign officials and Obama supporter celebs including singer Marc Anthony, film actress Elizabeth Banks, CBS’ The Talk cohost Aisha Tyler, TV/film actress Olivia Wilde, The Nanny and now TVLand sitcom star Fran Drescher, TV/film star Zach Braff, and Gilmore Girls‘ Alexis Bledel.
Penn is returning to TV in Rob Greenberg’s single-camera comedy pilot for CBS titled Ex-Men. This past season, he recurred on that network’s How I Met Your Mother. He also recently toplined ABC’s comedy pilot Prairie Dogs. But he’s probably best known for leaving Fox drama House and acting for a 2-year stint at the White House as associate director in the Office of Public Engagement (under his real name, Kalpen Modi). ”It felt worth trying to be part of such a pivotal moment in history,” Penn told Deadline afterwards. ”And let’s face it, people don’t go into acting for the career stability. You do it because you’re passionate. I found the same true about public service.”
