RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Undateable’ OK In Debut, ‘Gang Related’ Steady

By | Friday May 30, 2014 @ 11:21am PDT
Nellie Andreeva

34328This is something we’ve rarely seen in the past couple of years — a No.1 Thursday finish for NBC. The network tied CBS and Fox for the top spot among adults 18-49 on the night where it had struggled mightily this past season. Burn-off comedy series Undateable showed spunk, premiering with a 1.3 in 18-49 at 9 PM. It built onto its lead-in, Hollywood Game Night (1.2, up 9% from last week) to post NBC’s highest rating with regular programming in the 9-9:30 PM slot since November 7. Undateable almost doubled the debut of another midseason-turned-summer comedy on NBC last year, Save Me (0.7 on 5/23/13) to post the highest-rated summer comedy premiere on the Big 4 networks in five years (since ABC’s toon The Goode Family on 5/27/2009) and edged one of NBC’s fall Thursday comedy debuts, Welcome To The Family (1.2 on 10/2/13). Undateable also held all of its demo audience for a second episode at 9:30 PM (1.3). Last Comic Standing (1.6) capped the night for NBC with a minimal second-week drop, .1.

RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Last Comic Standing’ OK In Return, ‘Gang Related’ Premiere Soft

By | Friday May 23, 2014 @ 9:22am PDT
Nellie Andreeva

jb-smoove-lcsIf a rerun of The Big Bang Theory is the top program of the night by a landslide, it must be summer. CBS’ comedy juggernaut (2.2 among adults 18-49 for a repeat) ruled the first night after the official end of the 2013-14 broadcast season, which featured two premieres and a finale. After a four-year break, NBC’s Last Comic Standing returned last night, drawing a 1.7 in 18-49 for its eighth season premiere. That was down 15% from the show’s last season debut in June 2010, but a lot has changed in four years, so that number is pretty solid. It tied the iHeart Radio Music Awards as the top rating NBC has seen on Thursday in months. It outperformed significantly NBC’s recent in-season unscripted premiere, American Dream Builders, and built on its lead-in, Hollywood Game Night (1.1), by 55%.

101_gangrelated_mobile_carousel-carousel-360x282Last Comic also almost doubled the rating for the other premiere last night, Fox dark drama Gang Related (0.9), originally picked up for midseason 2014. Despite a solid lead-in from Kitchen Nightmares (1.5, down 12% from last week), Gang Related‘s performance was more in line with a low-cost import (NBC’s Crossing Lines and Saving Hope opened with a 0.7 last summer) than a Hollywood-made original drama (CBS’ Under The Dome premiered with a 3.2 in 18-49 last summer, ABC’s Mistresses with a 1.2). The Gang Related debut was even … Read More »

Fox Slates ‘I Wanna Marry Harry’ & ‘Riot’ For Summer, Changes ‘Gang Related’ Slot, Puts ‘Enlisted’ On Hold

Fox_Broadcasting_Company111004142957-200x101Fox has firmed up its late spring/summer scheduling plans, slating new unscripted series I Wanna Marry Harry, from producer Ryan Seacrest & ZigZag Prods, and Riot (formerly Slide Show), from producer Steve Carell and Shine America. I Wanna Marry “Harry,” featuring single American women vying for the heart of a Prince Harry lookalike they are led to believe is the real thing, will debut May 27 and air in the Tuesday 8 PM slot. Riot, featuring celebrities and comedians tackling song, dance and sketch challenges on enlisted1a tilted set, will premiere May 13, following the season finale of Glee. Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, originally slated to succeed Bones in the Friday 8 PM hour earlier this month, was held back when Rake was moved into the slot. The veteran reality series will now rejoin Fox’s Friday lineup on April 11, but it will air at 9 PM, following Rake. That means that midseason comedy Enlisted, already slated for preemption for the hourlong Raising Hope finale on April 4, will be pulled off the schedule after this Friday’s episode, with a return date/slot TBD. In other news, Fox is moving new drama Gang Related from the Tuesday 9 PM slot, where it was originally penciled in back in January, to Thursdays at 9 PM where it will follow Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. Its premiere date is being adjusted accordingly, from May 20 to May 22. Also set are season premiere dates for returning series MasterChef, Hotel Hell and So You Think You Can Dance. Fox Picks Up Dramas ‘Rake’, ‘Gang Related’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ And ‘Almost Human’

By | Wednesday May 8, 2013 @ 6:00pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

Fox just made its new drama series pickups, ordering four shows — Rake starring Greg Kinnear, Gang Related starring Ramon Rodriguez, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci’s Sleepy Hollow, and Almost Human, from the Fringe duo of J.H. Wyman and J.J. After last season’s experiment with Mob Doctor, Fox went unapologetically male with its new hours, all toplined by male actors — Kinnear (Rake), Rodriguez (Gang Related), Brit Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), — who is poised to be one of the breakout stars next season — and Karl Urban and Michael Ealy (Almost Human). I hear Rake is eyed for a midseason launch in the mold of another starring Fox drama vehicle, this season’s The Following. The drama pickups assure continuous presence on Fox for Abrams, Wyman, Kurtzman and Orci. Fringe, which Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci created and Wyman ran, finished its run on the network earlier this season. Studio-wise, Fox spread the wealth, picking up two projects from its sister studio and one each from Warner Bros. and Sony. Two of the pilots were directed by big-name feature helmers, Sam Raimi (Rake) and Len Wiseman (Sleepy Hollow). Fox’s other hourlong pilots, Delirium, starring Emma Roberts; Boomerang, starring Felicity Huffman and Anthony LaPaglia; and The List, starring Michael Pena, are dead. The network’s comedy pickups are expected shortly. Here are descriptions of Fox’s new drama series along with first-glimpse photos:

Fox Greenlights Navy & Police Drama Pilots

By | Wednesday January 30, 2013 @ 8:00am PST
Nellie Andreeva

Fox is a step closer to getting an aircraft drama series on the air with a pilot order to Wild Blue, from writer Taylor Elmore, producers Graham Yost and Mark Johnson and director Michael Dinner. Fox also has greenlighted cop drama pilot Gang Related, from feature writer Chris Morgan (Fast Five), with Scott Rosenbaum and Imagine TV. This brings the number of Fox drama pilots to eight as the network appears to be done on the hour side.

The Sony Pictures TV-produced Wild Blue (formerly The Bridge) is described as an upstairs/downstairs look at pressure-cooker lives of the U.S. Navy. It is a young ensemble about the working men and women on board an aircraft carrier equipped with a 500-foot landing strip, a nuclear reactor and 6000 souls on board. Fox originally put the project in development last year with Justified writer-producer Elmore writing and Johnson producing. It didn’t go to pilot, but the network kept it in contention, rolling in to this season. Then in August, Fox bought a second upstairs/downstairs drama set at an aircraft carrier from House executive producers Russel Friend & Garrett Lerner and 20th TV. In October, Justified executive producers Yost and Dinner boarded Wild Blue to help Elmore with the rewrite and give the … Read More »
