‘Sons Of Anarchy’ In Rearview Mirror, Ron Perlman Signs With Gersh

By | Friday April 11, 2014 @ 10:49am PDT
Mike Fleming

ron perlmanEXCLUSIVE: Gersh has signed Ron Perlman and his production company. After Hellboy and Sons Of Anarchy, Perlman is building the next chapter of his career. He’s not letting any moss grow under him since completing his superb turn as Sons biker club leader Clay Morrow. Perlman has optioned several screenplays, he is currently starring in and exec producing Hand Of God, a pilot for Amazon that Marc Forster is directing, and he has made a deal to co-write with Michael Largo the memoir Easy Street—The Hard Way that will be published by Perseus Books Group imprint Da Capo Press.

sonssI had the honor of being asked by Kurt Sutter to moderate the Sons panel that closed San Diego Comic-Con, and found Perlman to be so subdued and fatalistic about his character’s future on the show, almost seeming ashamed of what his character had done. Feeling he was losing his grip on the club (and not just because of the arthritis he tried to hide), Clay backstabbed Jax (Charlie Hunnam), his wife Gemma (Katey Sagal), and just about everyone else in the club, leaving bloodshed and a trail of bodies in his wake. It was impossible for the Comic-Con crowd not to feel like this was going to be his last hurrah. Now, the Emmy voters have been snobbish about Sutter’s series creation and have almost made it seem … Read More »

Late Scribe Budd Schulberg Signs With Gersh

By | Wednesday March 26, 2014 @ 11:27am PDT
Mike Fleming

schulbergOn the centennial anniversary of the birth of Oscar-winning On The Waterfront and A Face In The Crowd writer Budd Schulberg, his widow Betsy Schulberg has signed with Gersh to rep his estate. He died at 95 in 2009. The agency plans to steer several adaptations of his novels and reboots of his classic works. Schulberg wrote the Oscar-winning script for Elia Kazan’s On The Waterfront, and the novels What Makes Sammy Run?, The Disenchanted and The Harder They Fall. The son of a powerful Paramount exec, Schulberg had a boisterous and highly eventful life with his share of controversy. He famously became a friendly witness at the House Un-American Activities Committee, testifying about his time as a member of the Communist Party and naming eight Hollywood colleagues who were also members. He also served in the OSS in WWII and reportedly compiled evidence against and arrested Nazi propagandist director Leni Reifenstahl.

waterfront“Without Budd Schulberg, the Hollywood that we know of today wouldn’t exist, as he created the paradigm for what success stands for in this business as a writer and creative talent,” said Gersh co-head Bob Gersh. “He was an American treasure and a Hollywood legend, and we couldn’t be more pleased at Gersh to work with his estate on future projects that will entertain and inform audiences for generations to come.”

Schulberg’s son Benn is shooting a docu on his dad, Hollywood Renegade: The Many Loves Of Budd Schulberg, which was produced by Stephen Nemeth and executive produced by Ben Stiller and Spike Lee. Stiller long planned to direct a version of What Makes Sammy Run?, planning to play Hollywood hustler Sammy Glick. “Budd Schulberg lived Hollywood history, and chronicled it all,” said Stiller. “He was not one to shy away from controversy, and his work as a writer captured an era in 20th century America that is now fading away. Sammy remains the prototypical Hollywood novel and probably always will.” Read More »

Gersh Signs Oxford University Press For Film, TV Deals

By | Monday January 14, 2013 @ 7:59am PST
Mike Fleming

Gersh has signed Oxford University Press and will rep its academic and trade books for film, TV and digital opportunities for their Global Academic Business. Joe Veltre will shop its properties. Why sign an egghead outfit that was founded in 1478? Well, Oxford University Press has done pretty well in the non-fiction film arena. Among the OUP books turned into features are the Daniel Craig-starrer Defiance, the Channing Tatum-starrer The Eagle, and the docu Freedom Riders. “The breadth and quality of their list is extraordinary, and we feel privileged to help expand their reach into the world of film and television,” Veltre said.

It’s another example of publishers wanting to be part of the ancillary market for works. After years of paying writers a few thousand dollars to write articles and then watch those journalists make six-figure rights deals for film and TV adaptations, magazines and book publishers have moved to more than wet their beaks; they want to control the process. That includes magazine publishers like Conde Nast, which last year started a dedicated dealmaking division with former CW Entertainment chief Dawn Ostroff. The rationale: if the magazine is paying good money for the words and providing the means for them to be projected into the populace, why shouldn’t the publishers cash in? Read More »
