Hot Trailer: James Brown Biopic ‘Get On Up’

Say it loud: It’s The Trailer — Part 2. Universal has issued the second look at its biopic starring 42‘s Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul. Get On Up follows James Brown from hardscrabble upbringing to jail to the stage to musical immortality. Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd also star in the Tate Taylor-helmed pic that counts Mick Jagger and Brian Grazer among its producers. The show begins August 1:

“One day,” young James Brown’s aunt tells him, “everybody gonna know your name.” And so it was. Universal has dropped the first trailer for its biopic on the Godfather of Soul. Chadwick Boseman segues from playing Jackie Robinson in 42 to channeling another American legend in Get On Up. Octavia Spencer plays his Aunt Honey and Viola Davis is his mother in a cast that includes Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd. Producers include Brian Grazer and Mick Jagger. The Tate Taylor-helmed pic his the stage, er, screen on August 1:

Tika Sumpter Cast In James Brown Biopic ‘Get On Up’; Boyd Kestner, Natalie Imbruglia Topline Indie Comedy ‘Little Loopers’

Tika Sumpter has joined the cast of Universal’s James Brown biopic Get On Up. She will play Yvonne Fair, a singer in the James Brown Revue who recorded Brown’s “I Found You,” which later was reworked into his classic “I Got You (I Feel Good).” Tate Taylor is directing the pic, which stars Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul along with Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Nelsan Ellis. Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Steven Baigelman wrote the script, and Brian Grazer and Mick Jagger are producing along with Victoria Pearman and Erica Huggins. Sumpter appears on Tyler Perry’s The Haves And Have-Nots and next will be seen in the feature Ride Along. She is repped by WME and Brookside Artist Management.

Boyd Kestner and Natalie Imbruglia will star in Little Loopers, an indie family comedy from director Jimmy Valdez. Kestner plays a once-promising golfer whose community service leads to him coaching kids. He’s not really into it, but his interest piques when he meets the organization’s devoted director (Imbruglia). The cast also includes Rob Morrow, Jay Ferguson and Gregg Bello. ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ Adds John Leguizamo, Justin Long; Keith Robinson Joins James Brown Pic ‘Get On Up’; Rutger Hauer To Aid John Cusack In ‘Kickback’

Fox‘s Walking With Dinosaurs 3D has added a quartet of thesps to its voice cast. John Leguizamo joins the BBC Earth production as the Alexomis bird Alex, with Justin Long leads a trio of Pachyrhinosauruses as Patchi, Alex’s symbiotic host pal. Tiya Sircar will voice Juniper and Skyler Stone will voice Scowler rounding out the dino threesome. Barry Cook and Neil Nightingale are helming the CG/live-action December 20 release based on the 1999 BBC miniseries. Leguizamo is a client of UTA and Silver Lining Entertainment. Long is repped by ICM Partners and Intellectual Artists Management. Sircar is repped by Talent Works and Elevate. Stone is repped by DPN, Buchwald, and Luber Roklin.

Universal‘s James Brown biopic Get On Up has found another castmember to back Chadwick Bozeman’s Godfather of Soul. Keith Robinson will play Baby Roy, one of the original members of Brown’s band, joining Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in the Imagine Entertainment, Jagged Films, and Universal pic from The Help‘s Tate Taylor. Robinson, an actor and singer, showed off his pipes in Dreamgirls and also appeared in This Christmas. He’s repped by APA and D2 Management.

‘True Blood’s Nelsan Ellis Gets Key Role In James Brown Pic ‘Get On Up’

EXCLUSIVE: Nelsan Ellis has been set to play Bobby Byrd, James Brown’s longtime friend and musical collaborator in the Tate Taylor-directed Get On Up for Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Imagine’s Brian Grazer is producing with Jagged Films’ Mick Jagger. It’s a big role in the film behind Brown, who’s being played by Chadwick Boseman. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer also star. Ellis is best known for playing Lafayette on the HBO vampire series True Blood. He was last seen on screen playing Martin Luther King Jr. in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and his screen credits include The Express, The Soloist, Secretariat, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist. He is repped by ICM Partners and Brookside Artist Management.

Universal will start production November in Mississippi. The script is by Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Steven Baigelman, and Victoria Pearman and Erica Huggins are also producing.

Universal To Release James Brown Biopic ‘Get On Up’ In October 2014

Universal Pictures said today it will release Tate Taylor‘s James Brown movie Get On Up on October 17, 2014. The dating comes after Monday’s news that 42 star Chadwick Boseman has been tapped to play The Godfather of Soul. The pic charts a young boy’s rise from extreme poverty and violence to become one of the most influential black artists in history whose career spanned six decades. This is Taylor’s follow-up to his 2011 Oscar Best Picture nominee The Help. Imagine Entertainment‘s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins produce with Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman under their Jagged Films banner. Taylor also serves as a producer, while his Wyolah Films partner John Norris executive produces alongside Trish Hofmann and Peter Afterman. Grazer started the project at a time when Brown was an active part in its development before he died in 2006. The only other film on the docket for 10/17/14 so far is Fox’s Frankenstein.
