2nd UPDATE: Two remakes of British series were off to a promising start last night. The series premiere of MTV’s Skins averaged 3.3 million viewers, 2.7 million of them (3.4 rating) in the 12-34 demographic. Skins, which aired at 10 PM, drew the most 12-34 viewers for a series launch on MTV ever and a higher 12-34 rating than the premieres of such young-skewing scripted series as  ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars (2.2 rating) and The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2.3 rating). But then they didn’t have the hottest cable reality show as a lead-in. Skins, a remake of the popular British series, followed a special original Jersey Shore, which logged 7.7 million viewers and a 7.6 rating in persons 12-34. Next on the scripted side for MTV is the return of comedy The Hard Times of RJ Berger and the premiere of Teen Wolf.

Meanwhile, the debut of Syfy’s Being Human averaged 2 million viewers at 9 PM. That was lower than Syfy’s established series (for example, Eureka‘s recent Season 4 premiere logged 2.5 million viewers). But was better than the debut of Caprica (1.6 million) last January. In fact, this was Syfy’s most watched winter scripted series launch since 2005, the network said. Syfy also touted the female appeal of the British series’ reboot. Of the 1 million Adults 18-49 that tuned in, 58% (582,000) were women – the highest percentage of female viewers ever for a Syfy original scripted series telecast. Some have questioned Syfy’s decision … Read More »

Disney Channel Tries For New Miley Tonight

The last time the Disney Channel bet on a 13-year-old Southern starlet, it was Miley Cyrus. So now that Miley is all grown up (turning 18 in 2 weeks), I hear that The Powers That Be are putting the Southern starlet Bella Thorne on the same fast-track teen career path. Tennessee native Miley shared the sitcom spotlight with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. The brass are counting on Floridian Bella to be the breakout star of the new Disney Channel buddy comedy series Shake It Up which premieres tonight at 8:30 PM in a no-lose slot after the one-hour Hannah Montana Forever special “I’ll Always Remember You”. Miley’s character lived her dream singing while navigating school. In Shake It Up, Bella (who was cast when she was 13) is living her dream dancing while navigating school. Hey, no one ever accused TV execs of having original ideas even though  Carolina Lightcap replaced Rich Ross who moved up to movies…  Read More »

Miley Cyrus Changes Hollywood Agencies

EXCLUSIVE: I’m told the star of that billion dollar Disney franchise Hannah Montana is trading in Cunningham Escott Slevin Doherty (which helps transform mostly child actors, singers and models into A-list stars) for United Talent to follow her long-term agent Mitchell Gossett. According to my sources, Gossett, until now the VP of CESD’s theatrical division, will become a senior agent in UTA’s talent department. He is also bringing with him Miley’s father, singer/actor Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as AnnaSophia Robb (the young actress from Because Of Winn-Dixie, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Bridge To Terabithia, The Reaping) and High School Musical‘s Monique Coleman. In addition to Cyrus, Gossett has repped many of the big names in the tween/teen talent pool, like Jesse McCartney, Kristen Bell, and Hayden Panitierre. As for 15-year-old Cyrus, the actress/recording artist/touring singer with her own show on the Disney Channel is already a major profit center what with Hannah Montana the most-watched TV series among kids aged 6 to 14, and her two soundtracks from the show selling 2+ million albums in 2007.  It was Gossett who set up the meeting for both Cyrus and her father to demonstrate their father-daughter chemistry to the Disney’s Gary Marsh. Gossett soon negotiated for Miley to have deals with four areas at the Walt Disney Co: TV, film, consumer products and recording. For Disney, she also has a movie in the works for 2009 and a seven-figure book deal. It’s unclear how Miley’s career will be hurt or helped by that suggestive photo spread in Vanity Fair that … Read More »
