Park City, UT – January 26, 2011 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired US theatrical rights to Mark Pellington’s I MELT WITH YOU, a kinetic and visceral ensemble film starring Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay, Carla Gugino and Sasha Grey.
Jane, Lowe, Piven and McKay give bravura, unhinged performances as four friends on a drug and rock n’ roll fueled trip together in Big Sur. Pellington explores themes of masculinity and friendship with a groundbreaking visual style and dizzying post-punk soundtrack. Written by Glenn Porter, the film was produced by Pellington, Norm Reiss and Rob Cowan, and executive produced by Aaron Gilbert, Heidi Levitt and Neil LaBute. “Mark Pellington has made a maverick, stylish and powerful film that resonates for days after viewing,” said Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn. “Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay give some of the best performances of their entire careers and attention must be paid.”
“I’m ecstatic that our film has found a home for theatrical distribution and thrilled it is a company with people that completely understand what the film is about philosophically and aesthetically,” said Pellington.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn with Submarine’s Josh Braun and UTA’s Rena Ronson.
EXCLUSIVE: Rob Lowe has joined Thomas Jane and Jeremy Piven in I Melt With You, the indie ensemble thriller that Mark Pellington will direct near Big Sur in Northern California next month. Lowe will play a doctor struggling with deep personal loss and a growing drug addiction. Pellington hatched the storyline with screenwriter Glenn Porter for a micro-budget film that focuses on the pain of the modern male psyche. Considering that Pellington got that trio and the whole film will cost less than $1 million, my question is: why do movies cost so much, again? Lowe, who is separately involved with Colony Capital’s Tom Barrack in the formation of a $500 million media fund, just made a deal with Henry Holt to write Stories I Only Tell My Friends, a memoir about acting and fatherhood.
EXCLUSIVE: Thomas Jane and Jeremy Piven are set to star in I Melt With You, an ensemble thriller that will be directed by Mark Pellington. Production will begin in early August in Northern California. The thriller follows the interconnecting lives of four men. Glenn Porter wrote the script from a story he hatched with Pellington, who last directed Henry Poole Is Here and U2 3D. Rob Cowan and Norm Reiss are producing. Pellington and Porter will be exec producers with Neil Labute, Heidi Levitt, Aaron Gilbert and Jane. The pic, packaged by UTA, is privately financed and the budget is under a million bucks. Casting will begin so that the Hung and Entourage stars can return to their TV series.
“I am 48 and found a dearth of of films that speak to my life experience,” Pellington said. “Where is my generation’s version of Cassavetes’ Husbands? It is hard to get anything idiosyncratic made for a budget. I have been shooting music videos on small cameras at low cost and wanted to apply it to a film. This is about four guys and deals with mortality, aging and friendship. It is very dark and very low budget. I have nothing against the larger budget movies I have made. I just want to make movies and doing it this way improves my chances.”
