EXCLUSIVE: Carlos Saldanha, who co-directed Ice Age and then helmed two Ice Age sequels in addition to Robots and Rio, has formed BottleCap Productions. The label is Fox-based, where Saldanha made an exclusive five-year deal with 20th Century Fox and Fox International to develop both live-action and animated projects.
Saldanha has hired former Scott Free exec Maresa Pullman as his VP, and promoted Jessica Roberts to Creative Executive. Pullman, who will report directly to Saldanha, most recently worked at Scott Free where she helped develop the Duplass Brothers’ Cyrus, and co-produced Jake Scott’s Welcome To The Rileys. She also worked closely with Ridley Scott on a number of projects, serving as an executive producer on Scott Free’s short animated film featuring the Coca-Cola polar bears. She also worked directly under producer Michael Costigan, working on such films as American Gangster and Body Of Lies. EXCLUSIVE: UTA has signed Michael Berg, who co-wrote with Jason Fuchs 20th Century Fox’s upcoming Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth installment in the animated franchise. Berg co-wrote the first and third installments, the first of which was Oscar nominated for Best Animated Film. He also served as a consultant on Ice Age: The Meltdown. He’s currently working on Stage Entertainment’s theatrical production of Ice Age, which debuts on the London stage next fall. His previous credits include adapting the Michael Chabon novel Summerland for Miramax Films. He left ICM.
At this morning’s CinemaCon presentation of 20th Century Fox‘s 2012 product reel, co-chair Tom Rothman began by mentioning several future projects in various stages of production or pre-production. Those included new editions in the Die Hard (A Good Day To Die Hard set for Feb 14 2013), Percy Jackson, Planet Of The Apes and Wolverine franchises in addtion to a comedy reteam of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in The Internship. But the emphasis at the event was on the studio’s slate for this year leading up to their big Christmas epic and Oscar hope, Ang Lee’s The Life Of Pi (see: Fox World Premieres Stunning Footage Of Ang Lee’s 3D ‘The Life Of Pi’).
Kicking off with the Fox summer lineup co-chair Jim Gianopulos cited three 3D films including Ridley Scott’s return to the sci-fi format he championed for Fox in the original Alien – now back in form with their June 3 release Prometheus. Also highlighted was the Abe Lincoln action(!) drama Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (“the title says it all”, cracked Gianopulos) that comes from a creative teaming of director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and the prolific Tim Burton, who has had projects touted by three different studios here this week.
