Brownie Points To Tarantino, Apatow & Pals For New ‘Development’ Deal To Save CelluloidCelluloid lives to film another day: “After extensive discussions with filmmakers, leading studios and others who recognize the unique artistic and archival qualities of film, we have in place a plan that will enable us to continue production” of film stock, Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke says. The company once famous for “Kodak moments” will make about 450M linear feet of film — about 1/28 its output in 2006 as Hollywood has shifted to digital recording and projection.

Kodak was about to go to zero — with plans to close the last remaining film production plant, in Rochester, NY — before directors including Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Judd Apatow, and J.J. Abrams and several studios lobbied for a reprieve. (Abrams is shooting Star Wars Episode VII on film.) Abrams unveils the X-Wing Starfighter that will be used in next year’s Star Wars VII.  The fundraiser is part of an effort Disney has dubbed Force for Change, designed to raise money to “find solutions to the world’s biggest problems.” Last week, the campaign posted an amusing video featuring Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart (in drag as Princess Leia). Now they’ve gone full monte on the X-Wing to really wrap up the fundraiser in style. Here’s the trailer:

Billion-Dollar ‘Ghost Protocol’ Lawsuit Against Tom Cruise, Paramount, J.J. Abrams & Skydance DismissedWell, looks like someone’s 4th of July celebrations are starting a bit early. A federal judge today tossed a $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against Tom Cruise, JJ Abrams , Paramount Pictures, CEO Brad Grey, Skydance Productions and David EllisonJJ Abrams and others. “IT IS ORDERED AND ADJUDGED that the above-entitled case is dismissed, without prejudice, for lack of prosecution and for failure to comply with the orders of the Court,” said a 1-page order from Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell today (read it here).

The ending of the case in U.S. District Court comes nearly six months after Timothy Patrick McLanahan formally sued the notables and the studio claiming that 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was lifted off of his script. In an error-filled January 13 complaint demanding a jury trial, the plaintiff alleged that the fourth flick in the MI franchise was really derived from a script he wrote more than 15 years ago titled Head On. Cruise’s longtime lawyer Bert Fields called the wide-ranging legal action in early February “bizarre.” While O’Connell never went that far, the fact that the self-representing McLanahan never submitted required or demanded paperwork after making such a big claim and seeking such a big payout was a little extraordinary.

On June 4, the judge gave McLanahan one last chance to “show cause why this case should not be dismissed.” As evident from today’s order, the plaintiff never did and this case, as I predicted, went nowhere. Happy Holidays guys!

Showtime Orders ‘Roadies’ Comedy Pilot From Cameron Crowe, Winnie Holzman & J.J. AbramsAfter a few weeks of dealmaking, Showtime has finalized a pilot production order to Roadies, a comedy written, directed and executive produced by Cameron Crowe. The project, executive produced by My So-Called Life creator Winnie Holzman and J.J. Abrams, follows the day-to-day life of a successful rock tour as seen through the eyes of the crew members who help get the show on the road. It marks a return to the rock world for former Rolling Stones reporter Crowe, who previously tackled it in his semi-autobiographical feature Almost Famous.

holzmanJJAbramsCrowe wrote the script and will direct the pilot, with Holzman serving as showrunner. The two executive produce with Bad Robot’s Abrams and Bryan Burk, with the company’s Kathy Lingg co-executive producing. Warner Bros. TV, where Bad Robot is based, will produce the project, described as an inside look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of characters who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. Gail Levin who was the casting director for many of Crowe’s features including Almost Famous, We Bought a Zoo, Elizabethtown, Vanilla Sky and Jerry Maguire, will be casting the pilot.

The network is yet to make a decision on the future on the project, which has been in limbo following the sudden death of star Philip Seymour Hoffman in February. J.J. Abrams Unveils Charity Drive On ‘Star Wars’ Set: Video

He’s offering fans a chance to appear in a cameo in the movie via a $10 contribution to Star Wars: Force For Change. The new initiative from Disney and Lucasfilm, in collaboration with Bad Robot, is dedicated to finding creative solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems. The first Star Wars: Force for Change campaign will benefit UNICEF’s Innovation Labs and its programs aimed at helping the world’s most vulnerable children. Disney has committed $1 million to the project. Fans can contribute directly at Omaze.com/StarWars for a chance to appear in the film. For each $10 contribution, eligible participants will be automatically entered for a chance to win the cameo. The campaign runs through July 18. It looks like this is how Star Wars will be marketing itself in the social media era after tweeting out first cast photos and Abrams’ video on Star Wars Day on May 4. UPDATED, 7:09 PM: Looks like Roberto Orci indeed is set to direct the next Star Trek pic — as we reported exclusively last week.

PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, May 9: After an aggressive lobbying campaign, Roberto Orci has emerged as the clear frontrunner to replace JJ Abrams and direct Paramount‘s third installment of the Star Trek series. I’m hearing they’re in talks. This comes after Orci parted company with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman (though they continue on TV projects). This would amount to another first-time director taking on a massive project, which has been hit (Snow White And The Huntsman) and miss (Transcendence, John Carter, 47 Ronin).

trekk Orci could be an exception on the positive side of the ledger because he has been involved for so long as writer and producer in shaping such big scale films as the Star Trek films as well as the Transformers and Amazing Spider-Man movies. I’m told that Paramount’s partner, Skydance Productions, has been in Orci’s corner, but Paramount needed convincing. Now it all could happen at warp speed. Abrams helmed the first two films from his home base at Paramount, but surprised the studio by agreeing to relaunch the Star Wars franchise and direct the first film, at Disney. Stay tuned. NBC’s Alfonso Cuaron/J.J. Abrams Series ‘Believe’ Makes Showrunner Change, Goes On Early Hiatus

believeNBC‘s high profile midseason drama series Believe, co-created and executive produced by Gravity director/co-writer Alfonso Cuaron and exec produced by J.J. Abrams, is undergoing a behind the scenes change. Executive producer/showrunner Dave Erickson is expected to depart. He will be succeeded by co-executive producer/director Jonas Pate who has been named executive producer/showrunner, a rare case of a director, not a writer taking the reins of a scripted serie. He directed the important second episode of the series that follows the pilot helmed by Cuaron. Pate joins executive producers Cuaron, Abrams, Bryan Burk as well as Hans Tobeason who will now serve as on-set producer in New York where the series films. This marks the second showrunner change on Believe. Co-creator/executive producer and original showrunner Mark Friedman left the series in July. To accommodate the showrunner transition, Believe is going on a holiday hiatus a week earlier that the previously scheduled Dec. 20 start. The extra week will be used to work on scripts. The series will resume production on Jan. 6 as originally scheduled. NBC has not slated Believe yet but had been looking to launch it after the Winter Olympics, using the sports event to promote the series and benefiting from the strong awards attention Cuaron is enjoying with Gravity. International Emmys Laud ‘Les Revenants’, ‘Moone Boy’, Sean Bean, ‘5 Broken Cameras’

Les Revenants — an American remake of which is in development at A&E — was named best drama series of 2013 at the International Emmy Awards tonight, while Sean Bean won the best actor trophy for his role as a lit teacher with a cross-dressing alter ego in the British anthology Accused. Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro won best actress for her role in The Sweet Mother. The UK’s Moone Boy, about an Irish boy and his imaginary friend, took best comedy. Former The Daily Show correspondent (and newly named HBO show host) John Oliver hosted this year’s International Emmy ceremony, whose Founders Award went to J.J. Abrams, while the Directorate Award was presented to RTL Group Co-CEO Anke Schäferkordt.

Les Revenants, the French TV series based on an obscure 2004 movie that sold only 32,000 tickets in France, was a hit on Canal Plus and sold around the world — including the UK, where it aired subtitled as The Returned this year to great interest, and on Sundance Channel. The drama is about a small town turned upside down when several local people who have been long presumed dead suddenly reappear, having not aged and unaware of their own fatality. UPDATE: R2-D2 Confirmed For New ‘Star Wars’ Movie

UPDATE, 1:20 PM: He wasn’t just hanging around posing after all. Disney confirmed today that R2-D2 will be in Star Wars: Episode VII. A staple of every Star Wars pic, the little droid “will indeed be in the film”, the company said online Tuesday. This is the first character from the previous Star Wars films that we know for sure is returning for the J.J. Abrams-directed movie. Episode VII, the first of three new Star Wars movies, is set to hit the big screen in December 2015.

PREVIOUSLY, NOV. 14: First Disney finally announces a release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, now a week later we get the first photo of the production. Guess the filmmakers don’t have to worry about divulging any top-secret plot details via this so-so-natural shot that Bad Robot tweeted today with the caption, “Hi from the workshop!” Apparently this is the droid they’re looking for.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Gets December 18, 2015 Release Date

It’s going to be a happy Christmas two years from now for fans of a galaxy far far away away. The new J.J. Abrams-directed Star Wars movie will open on December 18, 2015, Disney announced today as it unveiled strong fourth-quarter earnings. “We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” Disney Studios chair Alan Horn said in a statement Thursday on StarWars.com. When Disney bought Lucasfilm in October 2012 for $4 billion, CEO Bob Iger said that three more Star Wars films would come out — with 2015 as the release date for the first new one. It’s a date Disney will now make by a hair. The new Star Wars movie is set to start filming early next year in the UK with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and his bad Robot partner Bryan Burk producing. Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin will serve as EPs. The December 18, 2015 date is the same day that Warcraft, the first pic under Universal and Legendary’s new deal, and Sony’s Inferno are presently set to be released as well.

J.J. Abrams & Lawrence Kasdan Take Over As ‘Star Wars’ Scribes

BREAKING…The new Star Wars movie has a new screenwriting team. It was announced online today that Episode VII director J.J. Abrams and Empire Strikes Back co-writer Lawrence Kasdan will take over as scribes for the upcoming Disney project which is set to be released in 2015. The duo are taking over from Michael Arndt. The writer, who penned the screenplay for Hunger Games: Catching Fire and won an Oscar for writing Little Miss Sunshine, was named as the sole screenwriter on the pic early last November. Arndt was also said to be working on treatments for the other two planned new Star Wars films.I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script,” states LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy in a statement posted on Starwars.com Thursday. “There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. ABC Buys Bad Robot Ensemble Comedy From Abby Kohn & Marc Silverstein

EXCLUSIVE: J.J. Abrams is reteaming with The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein for a new comedy project, this time at ABC. The network has put in development Main Street, an ensemble single-camera half-hour written by Kohn and Silverstein. The project, which has a script commitment, centers on a group of friends who, facing the reality that making it in a big city is a dead-end proposition, move to  the Mississippi Delta to try to make their dreams come true there. Kohn and Silverstein are executive producing with Abrams and Bryan Burk, while Kathy Lingg serves as a co-exec producer and Athena Wickham as producer for Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV. Last season, Bad Robot sold another single-camera comedy project from Kohn and Silverstein, Adulting, which landed a put pilot commitment to Fox but did not go to pilot.

J.J. Abrams Gripes About ‘Star Trek’ Video Game: “A Big Disappointment To Me”

Fanboy gamers often complain that studio meddling somehow ruined a video game tied to a major movie release. It’s less common to hear an A-list filmmaker blame developers for messing with his movie. Star Trek Into Darkness is the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2013, but its director seems to think it could have done better — if it hadn’t been for that pesky video game. J.J. Abrams said in an interview with GamerHub this week that Star Trek: The Game — which generated terrible reviews and crummy sales — “was obviously a big disappointment to me. We were actually involved from the very beginning, and then we sort of realized that it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted. Showrunner Mark Friedman Exits NBC’s J.J. Abrams Drama ‘Believe’

The co-creator and showrunner on NBC’s new high-concept drama has left the show. Sources tell Deadline that Mark Friedman (The Forgotten, Home Of The Brave) made the decision to exit Believe, from Warner Bros Television and Bad Robot Productions, on his own accord and that the parting was agreeable. Believe’s other co-creator Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, Children Of Men), who directed and co-wrote the pilot, will remain as executive producer alongside J.J. Abrams. The Friedman move recalls a similar situation 18 months ago in which the co-creator/executive producer/showrunner of another Bad Robot midseason drama, Alcatraz, exited ahead of that series’ launch. Elizabeth Sarnoff, who had quietly been elevated to EP two months earlier, left that Fox drama — citing the usual “creative differences”. Abrams later said of Sarnoff, “She didn’t feel like she was the right person to run the show.”

J.J. Abrams’ ‘Person Of Interest’ Honored As 2013 Comic-Con’s Key Card In 30 Hotels

Either the use of ’TOLDJA’ is a lovely homage to me (see left) or else someone’s infringing on Deadline’s trademark. Just kidding… The CBS/Warner Bros Television hit show Person Of Interest will be featured on nearly 40,000 limited edition collectible key cards at nearly 30 participating hotels throughout the San Diego area during the 2013 Comic-Con this month. Not surprising that the network and studio are sucking up to the show’s executive producer, Bad Robot Productions’ JJ Abrams, since he’s become a humongous draw because of directing both the new Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. Meanwhile POI itself  seems especially prophetic given all the national security surveillance news headlines right now. “There is no place that the Machine cannot access. It is now infiltrating your hotel room. You are most definitely being watched,” says the studio’s slogan. The collectibles will feature 2 separate designs, including one starring Reese and Finch (Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson). This marks the 6th consecutive year that Warner Bros has been the official Comic-Con hotel keycard sponsor and the first time that a single show has been selected. Person Of Interest holds its Comic-Con panel session on July 20, with executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman joined by members of the cast. The crime series finished the 2012–13 season as TV’s 3rd most-watched drama (behind only NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles), averaging 16.2M viewers per episode, a +12% increase above Season 1. The show’s Season 3 begins on September 24.

‘Person Of Interest’ Available For Digital Download For The First Time

This is a news that has been long time coming: all aired episodes of CBS/Warner Bros.’ drama series Person Of Interest are finally available digitally. The first two seasons of the crime drama are now available via digital download to own through all digital retailers, including iTunes and Amazon Instant Video. The series is still not available for streaming. “We are all excited that new and existing fans of Person Of Interest can finally catch up with the first two seasons,” said series’ executive producer J.J. Abrams, who had voiced his frustration over POI‘s unavailability online that made it difficult for new viewers to join the show. Digital deals are being negotiated between TV studios and networks. CBS is traditionally conservative when it comes to digital exposure of their shows, with the downloading pact between the network and Warner Bros. TV for POI taking particularly long to hammer out. For comparison, Abrams/Warner Bros.’ freshman NBC drama Revolution has been available both for downloads and streaming. POI, which is yet to be taken out to the off-network syndication market, is coming off a strong second season, boosted by new lead-in Two And A Half Men, averaging 16.2 million viewers, a 12% increase above the show’s previous season. It relocates to Tuesday 10 PM in the fall.

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot To Develop Rod Serling’s Final Screenplay Into Event Series

Thirty eight years after Rod Serling‘s death, his final screenplay is heading to the screen. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Prods. has acquired the rights to The Twilight Zone creator’s unproduced last feature script The Stops Along The Way. The project will be developed into an event limited series through Bad Robot’s deal at Warner Bros. TV and taken out into the marketplace. Details about the premise are being kept under wraps. Serling talked about the project in his final interview four months before his death when he was asked if he had a script he has special feeling for. “I just wrote The Stops Along The Way, which is, I think, a lovely script,” he said.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Serling wrote and produced a number of TV and feature screenplays, including Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, Planet Of The Apes, and Requiem For A Heavyweight, but he is best known for his Twilight Zone anthology series, which was just named one of the top five Best Written TV Series of all time by the Writers Guild of America, West. ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ $164.5M Global: Lower Domestic But +80% Bigger Overseas; ‘Gatsby’ $132.1M Global, ‘Iron Man 3′ $1B

But came nowhere near the $80M weekend and $100M total predicted. Star Trek Into Darkness from Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions, and director J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot opened with $2M Wednesday from IMAX late shows, $11.5M Thursday, $22M Friday, $27.2M Saturday (for a +25% bump), and an estimated $21.2M Sunday. So that’s a $70.5M weekend from 3,868 theaters and an $84M domestic cume. Exit polling shows that the audience was 64% male/36% female with 27% under age 25/73% age 25 and over. Despite the passage of 4 years and the addition of 3D and IMAX for ticket premiums, 4 1/2 days of Star Trek Into Darkness barely beat 2009′s Star Trek 3-day weekend opening. Rightly or wrongly, fanboys (who are notoriously hard to please) saw the sequel as a ripoff of 1982′s The Wrath Of Khan. I felt the problem was that the latest pic’s marketing assumed people had seen the first installment and therefore didn’t target newbies. The iconic space tentpole in 3D received a coveted “A” CinemaScore to help word of mouth and 87% positive Rotten Tomatoes score setting it up for a strong weekend. The budget was a costly $190M, but the studio was predicting a 3-day weekend domestic estimate of $80M and 4-day estimate of $100M. Abrams’ first grossed $257.7M in North America but only $128M overseas where the franchise has long underperformed. STID was expected to easily beat the North American take so Abrams filmed 30 minutes using high-resolution cameras to increase the IMAX grosses which comprised 16% of domestic. To expand international, Paramount dispatched Abrams’ Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk to share 20 minutes of footage with media and distributors abroad earlier this year. It helped: international told a stronger story. Since sequels usually play well overseas, the total is $80.5 from 40 markets through Sunday, or +80% from the prior film. For comparison, STID is running +33% on a global basis compared to the 2009 reboot. Worldwide total is $164.5M. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Kirk and Spock with its ensemble USS Enterprise cast and Benedict Cumberbatch debuts as the movie’s mysterious baddie in this sequel to Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise, which began as a 1960s TV series. Star Trek Into Darkness, based on Gene Roddenberry’s creation, was written by credited scripters Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman & Damon Lindelof, who also are producers along with the Bad Robot duo of Abrams and Burk.

On May 16, the film crossed the $1B benchmark at the global box office in 23 days and the $300M threshold at the domestic box office in 14 days. Iron Man 3 is now the #9 highest grossing film of all time globally and the #9 highest grossing film of all time internationally. This is the 2nd Marvel Studios film and the 6th Walt Disney Studios release to reach $1B globally, and the 9th Disney release to reach $300M domestic.

Baz Luhrmann’s biggest to date here and overseas looks to make $140M domestic all in. “Domestic box office results are excellent,” a Warner Bros exec gushed. “Counter-programming can succeed with great success in a summer of tentpole fanboy event films.” Coming off the heels of a gala opening night event at the Cannes Film Event, The Great Gatsby in 3D released in 49 territories overseas and grossed a big $42.1M (ith 4.6Madmissions from almost 8,400 screens). This was 38% higher than Luhrmann’s Australia in the same markets ($30.4M) and 3x higher than Moulin Rouge ($13.8M). This weekend’s rollout abroad represent 70% of the international box office; major markets yet to launch include Australia (May 30th), Mexico (May 31st), Brazil (June 7th), Japan (June 14th). This weekend’s results included some #1 placements despite stuff competition: Russia $6.2M (Rbl 194M), UK $6.1M (£4.0M), France $4.7M (€3.6M), Korea $4.3M (KRW 4.75B), Italy $3.8M (€2.9M), Germany $3.7M (€2.8M), Spain $2.2M (€1.7M), Taiwan $779K (NT$23.9M).

Also, Universal’s May 24th domestic opener Fast & Furious 6 kicked off its worldwide release in the UK and Ireland this weekend with a record breaking #1 opening. The film grossed $13.8M (£9M) at 460 dates scoring Universal’s biggest 3-day opening weekend in that territory (smashing the previous record set by Les Miserables of $13.1M). It is the biggest opening weekend in the UK for the franchise and the highest opening weekend for Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. F&F6 is now the 2nd biggest opening weekend of 2013 there behind IM3‘s $17.6M.

UPFRONTS 2013: The Overachievers

First off, congratulations to all writers, producers, actors and agents who landed new series this week. I know it wasn’t easy. Here is Deadline’s annual list of those who excelled at the upfronts. I tried to be inclusive, but if I’ve missed anyone who’s had a banner week, let me know. I’ve also compiled a list of pods and independent producers with multiple broadcast series.

Cougar Town co-creator Bill Lawrence and his Doozer banner had three new series unveiled at the upfronts this week: comedies Undateable on NBC, Surviving Jack on Fox and Ground Floor on TBS. Also, TBS recently renewed Cougar Town for a fifth season.

J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot claimed one of the top new drama series last season with NBC’s Revolution and one of the hottest sophomore shows with CBS’ Person Of Interest. The company is keeping the momentum with two new series orders for next season: Almost Human at Fox and Believe at NBC.

Independent producer Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment received two new series orders from the broadcast networks: Back In The Game at ABC and Friends With Better Lives at CBS. Additionally, his freshman ABC comedy The Neighbors was renewed and his ABC pilot Bad Management is in serious contention for a series pickup. Kaplan also received two cable series orders in the past month, for Chasing Life on ABC Family and Instant Mom on NickMom, and also has comedy series Wendell & Vinnie on Nick at Nite and pilot HR at Lifetime.

Writer-producer Julie Plec also landed two new series this week, both at the CW: She wrote/executive produces the planted Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals and executive produces The Tomorrow People. Additionally, she executive produces TVD, giving her three series on the air next season. (Fellow Tomorrow People executive producer Greg Berlanti has two, including returning CW hit Arrow.)

Another drama writer-producer, former ER showrunner David Zabel, saw both of his pilots picked up. He is the writer/exec producer on ABC’s Betrayal and co-writer/exec producer on ABC’s Lucky 7. Read More »
