‘Jurassic Park 3D’ Opens Big In China

The release of Universal’s Jurassic Park 3D kicked off in China yesterday, with the film claiming the top spot at the box office grossing $6.3 million on 2500 screens. The studio says its the fourth-biggest opening day for a U.S. film in the territory this year, topping titles like Man Of Steel and The Hobbit. Iron Man remains at the top of the list, grossing $19.1 million in China when it was released May 1. Pacific Rim ($8.6M) and Fast & Furious 6 ($8.3M) round out the top three. Jurassic Park 3D‘s international cume stands at $20.7M ahead of openings this weekend in Mexico, Panama, Spain, and the UK and Ireland. In the U.S., the 3D conversion of the dinosaur blockbuster was released in early April, grossing more than $18 million on its opening weekend.

SUNDAY AM, 5TH UPDATE: There was a dramatic change in the Top Five as Box Office Results Evil Dead Jurassic Park 3Dthe biggest grossing three films made over $20M through Sunday for a really big weekend. Total moviegoing looks around $134 million which is +8% over last year. Sony’s TriStar/FilmDistrict/Ghost House’s newcomer Evil Dead is the easy #1 despite dropping an expected -24% from Friday to Saturday for a fierce $26M. Holdovers G.I. Joe: Retaliation from Paramount and The Croods from DreamWorks Animation went up +36% and +39% respectively from Friday to Saturday to take over places second and third. Universal’s new conversion Jurassic Park 3D as expected dropped to #4 and should end Sunday with a decent $18.2M. Analysis coming. Here’s the new Top Ten order:

Universal Sets And Shuffles 2013 Pics, Pushes ’47 Ronin’ Again

BREAKING: Universal Pictures has shuffled the release dates of several of its major upcoming films and set release dates for several others. Most noticeable on that list is that the studio has pushed the Keanu Reeves-starrer 47 Ronin from February 8, 2013 to Christmas Day, 2013. It’s the second time that the film has been pushed, and this delay revolves around the need for a bit of re-shooting and visual effects work that is being done in London and couldn’t be executed while the Olympics were going on. There have been rumors of woe on this one, directed by heralded commercials helmer Carl Erik Rinsch. While movies that do re-shoots have become the target of bloodsport reporting–reshoots have been a part of moviemaking before the talkie became in vogue, I’m sure–studio insiders maintain that the film is getting where it needs to be in order for the 3D Asian samurai epic to have a chance to succeed.

In other date changes, the Melissa McCarthy-Jason Bateman comedy Identity Thief has moved from May 10, 2013 to 47 Ronin‘s February 8, 2013 date; Jurassic Park in 3D has been moved up from July 19, 2013 to April 5; the Richard Curtis-directed About Time has been dated for release on May 10, 2013; Kick-Ass 2 has been set for June 28, 2013; R.I.P.D., the supernatural comedy that stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges has been moved from June 28 to July 19, 2013; and … Read More »
