TLC may be the home of Sex Sent Us To The ER, Buying Naked, My Crazy Obsession, Hoarding: Buried Alive and the Duggars, but at least it has not foisted Kate Gosselin on us in more than two years. That streak will end on June 19, however, when the network debuts Part 1 of its two-parter, Kate Plus Eight: Sextuplets Turn 10, following the season premiere of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. TLC, which made the Gosselins a household name documenting the family and its breakup with docu-series Jon & Kate Plus 8, will catch up with Kate Gosselin and her eight kids in a one-hour special to air sometime in June, the network said this morning. That’s five years after TLC snagged a then-record-breaking crowd of nearly 11 million viewers who tuned in, in June 2009, to watch parents Jon and Kate announce the smash-up of their marriage after 10 years. TLC in its announcement today says it’s been more than two years since we’ve last seen the Gosselin clan — which may be true if you’re only watching TLC, but not the case if you area regular reader of the tabloids and celebrity mags. Kate also has been a regular on the reality-TV circuit since the end of Jon & Kate Plus 8; she’s most recently rumored to be a candidate for the next round of Celebrity Apprentice on NBC and, of course, was one of those contestants you loved to loathe on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars awhile back. Jon most recently has been seen ranting about Kate on VH1′s Couples Therapy, and giving interviews about his new tell-all book. Read More »
TLC, which at one time rode the huge ratings wave of its reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8 — especially when husband and wife Jon and Kate Gosselin decided to split up during the show’s run and became front-page tabloid fare — has canceled its post-divorce series Kate Plus 8. The final episode will air Sept. 12. Here is the network’s statement:
TLC has decided not to renew another season of Kate +8. By the end of this season Kate + 8 will have hit the 150 episode mark (including Jon & Kate + 8); an exceptional milestone. TLC hopes to check in with Kate and the family periodically with specials in the future.
Star Kate Gosselin also weighed in on the cancellation. “We’ve had a great run!” she wrote on Twitter. “Six years of whirlwind funfilled adventures thanks to TLC and our many many supportive & diehard fans! While it is very sad for me and the kids (there were many tears at the breakfast table this morning!), we are looking forward with great anticipation to our bright future! As is very typical for me, I am choosing to see the positive in this situation and I am excited to consider the many more invigorating opportunities that may come my way! And maybe even some dating??!! We wish our fans well. And remember, this is not ‘goodbye.’ I prefer to … Read More »
Sarah Palin and Kate Gosselin have helped Eileen O’Neill get a big new job at Discovery Communications. O’Neill, General Manager of Discovery’s TLC, home of such hit series as Jon and Kate Plus 8, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, 19 Kids and Counting and Sister Wives, will now also oversee the flagship Discovery Channel.
Silver Spring, Md. – Discovery Communications today named Eileen O’Neill to the newly created position of Group President, Discovery and TLC Networks. The expanded role overseeing Discovery’s two U.S. flagships was part of a larger restructuring of Discovery’s U.S. networks announced by Discovery Communications President and CEO David Zaslav.
“Eileen is a home-grown Discovery talent with a 21-year track record of success that is nothing short of astounding,” said Zaslav. “Each network she led has been infused with creativity, innovation and content that breaks through the clutter of the television landscape. Most recently, her big, bold swings at TLC have transformed that network and driven it into the top 10 for women with an incredible 31 series averaging more than 1 million viewers in 2010. We’re so proud and privileged to have Eileen at this company and I am confident her leadership will drive our biggest engines – Discovery Channel and TLC – to even greater success.”
Discovery Channel President and General Manager Clark Bunting will report to O’Neill, as will TLC Chief Operating Officer Edward Sabin, who is serving as interim General Manager of TLC.
