By | Thursday December 12, 2013 @ 9:02am PST

The Sing-OffBack for its second show of the week amid its current abbreviated run, The Sing-Off (1.8/5) had a standoff with The X Factor (1.4/4) last night. The NBC series hit the higher note, but the two-hour a cappella show still slid 25% from Monday’s airing to hit a winter telecast low. Heading toward next week’s Season 3 finale, last night’s live X Factor on Fox remained even with its December 4 episode as the final four acts showed their wares with three songs each in anticipation of an elimination tonight.

Last week CBS was all encores except for Survivor (2.5/8), but last night it was a full slate of originals. The 13th and penultimate episode of the Mark Burnett-produced reality show’s 27th season slipped 4% from its December 4 episode. The rest of the night was not so kind to CBS: The return of Criminal Minds (2.4/7) and CSI (1.8/5) saw both series down 14% from their last originals three weeks ago. Still, with 11.02 million viewers, Criminal Minds was the most watched show Wednesday, helping CBS finish first for the night in adults 18-49 (2.2/6) and viewers (10.260 million). Read More »

RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘SYTYCD’ & ‘Duets’ Premiere Lack High Notes, ‘Awake’ Ends Up

Thursday night’s battle of the competition premieres left neither really strutting their stuff. The two-hour 8 PM time slot premiere of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance(2.4/8) saw a misstep from last year. SYTYCD was down 27% from last year’s season opener. Going toe to toe with SYTYCD in the slot was ABC’s Duets (1.7/5) With American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles as judges, Duets can lay claim to some serious singing star power. ABC’s new singing competition show was up 8% over SYTYCD in total viewers, though Fox dominated the Adult 18-49 demo by 41%. Duets brought in around 6.7 million total viewers over the two hours  to Fox’s approximately 6.2 million. However, Duets was down 29% from last year’s Expedition Impossible premiere but that still made it ABC’s biggest audience in the slot on a post-season Thursday in 4 years.

With the season over and heading into the Memorial Day weekend, it was a night of repeats on NBC that paid off for the finale of Awake (0.9/3) The now canceled police procedural’s season one closer was up 29% from last week’s season low. Over on ABC in the same 9 PM time slot, the third season of Rookie Blue (1.4/4) started off down 13% from last year’s premiere.

In a night of repeats on CBS the 8 PM The Big Bang Theory (2.3/8) repeat drew over 8.2 million viewers. That was followed by 6.2 million watching Rules of Engagement (1.7/6) 7.8 million watching Person of Interest (1.4/4) and just a little more … Read More »

ABC Greenlights Music Competition Series ‘Duets’ Starring Kelly Clarkson For Summer

Nellie Andreeva

ABC has picked up Duets, a singing competition starring Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Lionel Richie and Robin Thicke. On the show, Clarkson, Nettles, Richie and Thicke will individually travel across America looking for undiscovered talent. Ultimately, each star will choose two singers to be his/her duet partners. Together the mentors and their protégés will take the stage each week and perform in front of a live studio audience. In the end, one of the pairs will win, with the amateur getting a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Duets is executive produced by Robert Deaton, while Charles Wachter is co-executive producing. With Duets, ABC is throwing its hat into the music competition series ring. The network joins the CW, which also has a summer singing competition series, the Queen Latifah-produced Star Next Door, where mentors, including Gloria Estefan and John Rich, will each travel the country looking for undiscovered talent. Duets is listed as an original series though there have been similar series airing internationally. In the U.S., Fox aired Celebrity Duets, executive produced by Simon Cowell, in summer 2007. With Duets, Clarkson returns to summer reality series where she rose to fame on the first season of American Idol.
