The latest peek at Focus Features‘ upcoming 3D stop-motion pic is a more a dialogue-free look at its look than a preview of its story. To fill you in, The Boxtrolls – from ParaNorman and Coraline toon studio Laika and based on Alan Snow’s novel Here Be Monsters! — centers on a boy raised by a group of cardboard-clad subterranean beings. Directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, the voice cast includes Isaac Hempstead Wright, Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette, Nick Frost, Jared Harris and Richard Ayoade. BREAKING: Moments after setting a deal with Random House Studio for Longbourne, Focus Features has locked its third animated movie project with ParaNorman and Coraline partner LAIKA. This one is calledThe Boxtrolls, which is in production, and Focus will release it October 17th, 2014. Focus has worldwide distribution rights and Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada).

Focus Features has released a final web trailer for the LAIKA stop-motion animated ParaNorman 3D feature that opens Friday. ParaNorman is directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away, The Tale of Despereaux) and Chris Butler (who also wrote the screenplay). This trailer takes a different approach from those that preceded it:
Mary Sandell has been appointed LAIKA’s Head of Production. Sandell has been with the Portland-based animation studio since 2005. Sandell was a producer on LAIKA’s acclaimed 2009 debut 3D stop motion animated feature Coraline. Previous to joining LAIKA, Sandell was the producer of DreamWorks’ primetime NBC animated series Father of the Pride for two years. Sandell has worked for nearly 20 years on commercials, features and TV series. LAIKA’s second 3D stop-motion animated film ParaNorman comes out August 17, 2012. ParaNorman‘s voice cast includes Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann Jeff Garlin and John Goodman, among others. LAIKA is owned by Nike chair and co-founder Phil Knight.
