Lily James, Paul Dano Circling BBC, Weinstein Co ‘War And Peace’ Miniseries

Lily James, Paul Dano Circling BBC, Weinstein Co ‘War And Peace’ MiniseriesEXCLUSIVE: The six-part adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic War And Peace is beginning to cast up. I hear that Downton Abbey’s Lily James and PrisonersPaul Dano have offers for lead roles and are seriously circling. The mini hails from BBC Worldwide, The Weinstein Co and Ripper Street‘s Look Out Point. Described as one of the most ambitious event series ever made for the BBC, it will be produced by BBC Cymru Wales and scripted by Andrew Davies. James would play Natasha Rostova, one of the novel’s central War and Peacecharacters, who ultimately falls in love with Pierre Bezukhov, the awkward illegitimate son who rises in society but leads a tumultuous life as he seeks to overcome his emotions. Dano would play Pierre. In King Vidor’s 1956 feature adaptation, the roles were played by Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda.

The notoriously expansive novel begins in 1805 Russia and revolves around five aristocratic families set against the backdrop of the reign of Alexander I, the lingering effects of his grandmother Catherine The Great’s rule and the events surrounding Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812. Executive producers on the mini are BBC Cymru Wales drama chief Faith Penhale, BBC Wales’ George Ormond, Davies, Look Out Point’s Simon Vaughn and Harvey Weinstein.

The miniseries is due for air in the UK in 2015 and was a first sign of The Weinstein Co’s ambitions to forge into the European TV arena when it was announced in October. The company subsequently teamed with the BBC and Look Out on upcoming TV movie Stan And Ollie, which is being scripted by Philomena’s Jeff Pope. TWC also acquired U.S. TV and VOD rights for the first three seasons of BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders. Read More »

Here’s our first look at Disney‘s live-action take on Cinderella — well, the first look at her footwear, at least. The new teaser for the Kenneth Branagh-helmed pic starring Lily James as the socially awkward, animal-loving title character is all prisms and Disney-fied musical flourishes, capped off with a metaphorical butterfly. The film co-starring Cate Blanchett and Richard Madden is set for release March 13. Take a look:

BREAKING: Disney searched as hard for its Cinderella as the fairy tale prince who canvassed the kingdom lugging one glass slipper. Downton Abbey‘s Lily James has been set for the role in the live-action re-imagining the classic tale. Kenneth Branagh is directing, and Cate Blanchett plays the nasty and manipulative stepmother. Allison Shearmur, David Barron and Simon Kinberg are producing.

James is repped by Charles Collier at Tavistock Wood in the UK and UTA in the U.S.

EXCLUSIVE: After getting a no from Harry Potter‘s Emma Watson for Cinderella, Disney and director Kenneth Branagh are testing three young actresses this week in London. One of them will likely walk away with the title role. I’m hearing that WME-repped Bella Heathcoate, UTA-repped Lily James and CAA-repped Margot Robbie are testing.

Heathcoate most recently was seen in Dark Shadows and Not Fade Away, while James was in Downton Abbey and Wrath Of The Titans and Robbie was in Pan Am and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Cinderella has Cate Blanchett attached. Read More »
