Luis Prieto (Pusher) is directing action thriller Kidnap with Halle Berry starring as a mother who will stop at nothing to rescue her abducted son. Knate Gwaltney wrote the script for the project that’s a female twist on Taken. Di Bonaventura Pictures’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Erik Howsam are producing. Lotus Entertainment is handling international sales here in Cannes and CAA, which packaged the project, is repping domestic. Executive producers are Joey Tufaro and Colin Bates, and Claudia Blumhuber and Florian Dargel of Silver Reel along with Lotus’ Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, D.J. Gugenheim and Ara Keshishian. Berry will also executive produce with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, through their 606 Films. Berry is repped by CAA, Vincent Cirrincione Associates, and attorney Doug Stone with Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson and Binder. Prieto is with CAA, and Gwaltney is also repped by CAA and attorney Darren Trattner at Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
EXCLUSIVE: As international buyers begin to arrive in Toronto for the festival, Lotus Entertainment has staked a big one. Lotus has come on board to handle international sales for A Hologram For The King, the adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel that Tom Hanks will star in and Tom Tykwer will direct in a reteam from Cloud Atlas. Playtone and X Filme Creative Pool are producing.
Lotus will sell foreign rights here in Toronto to get the film ready for an early 2014 production start. CAA will make the domestic deal. Hanks will play a struggling businessman who heads for a rising Saudi Arabian city, far from weary, recession-scarred America, in a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and finally do something great. Tykwer wrote the script. Deadline first revealed the project as it was mobilizing in June.
EXCLUSIVE: Lotus Entertainment and Mayhem Pictures have set Californication’s Addison Timlin and War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine to star in Fallen, an adaptation of Lauren Kate’s best selling YA novel series. Shine helmer Scott Hicks is set to direct. Kathryn Price and Nicole Millard adapted and Michael Ross wrote the most recent draft. Lotus is financing, handling foreign sales, and producing with Mayhem Pictures.
Fallen is the first in a four-part series, a Gothic romantic thriller that centers around Luce (Timlin), a shy teen who is suspected of killing a boy and is sent to Sword and Cross reform school. The school is filled with frequent supernatural occurrences and it becomes clear that the majority of students are fallen angels on the side of good or evil. A battle commences and a love story with deadly consequences for Luce is formed with two male students who have dark secrets of their own. Kate’s followup novels, Torment, Passion and Rapture, were also big bestsellers. Mayhem’s Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray are producing with Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Lotus Entertainment. Silver Reel’s Claudia Bluemhuber is exec producer and Campbell McInnes of Lotus is overseeing the project. The producers are currently in discussions with domestic distributors, with CAA handling that deal. EXCLUSIVE: Lotus Entertainment and Davids Canton Production are partnering on psychological thriller Restart based on Matthew Klein’s novel No Way Back which was published this spring by Corvus. Brad Anderson (The Call, The Machinist) is attached to direct from a script penned by Gregory Poirier (National Treasure: Book Of Secrets). Restart centers on an ordinary man who discovers that his entire life is being infiltrated and manipulated by a terrifying criminal network. Danny Davids and Neil Canton are producing. Lotus’ Jim Seibel, Bill Johnson and D.J. Gugenheim are exec producing. WME Global is representing domestic while Lotus Entertainment is handling international sales. Anderson is currently in production on Eliza Graves with Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Michael Cane and Ben Kingsley. He is repped by WME, Cinetic Management and Sloss Eckhouse Law Co. EXCLUSIVE: It has begun to feel like that pre-holiday slumber time, but here is a spec script that just sold in a competitive situation. Lotus Entertainment has landed the rights to Hernany Perla’s spec, Revelation, for a low to mid six figures. Circle Of Confusion’s David Alpert and Stephen Emery will produce with Anil Kurian. Lotus Co-Chairmen Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson will executive produce. D.J. Guggenheim brought in the spec and will oversee the project for Lotus.
It’s a high concept thriller with time travel and murder, I’m told. Hernany previously sold the feature spec Day One at MGM and his producing credits include Ghost Team One and the upcoming feature Eden. He was an exec at Lionsgate before the writing took off. Hernany is repped by Original Artists and Madhouse Entertainment.
Lotus has been getting aggressive. At Cannes, the label sold out international on the Anne Hathaway-starrer Song One, and arranged financing with Silver Reel on Joshua Marston’s Double Hour with Joel Edgerton and Michelle Williams (with CAA and UTA selling domestic; and Craig Zobel’s Z For Zachariah with Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried and Chiwetel Ejiofer, and CAA and WME repping domestic. Lotus recently came on board the re-make of Park Chan Wook’s Sympathy For Vengeance, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and CJ Entertainment producing.
