Alcon Entertainment has cast the Johnny Utah to Gerard Butler‘s Bodhi in the upcoming Point Break remake. Luke Bracey (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) will star opposite Butler in the updated of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 bro-action classic, which is being directed by Invincible‘s Ericson Core. Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Total Recall) scripted the pic which sees the original Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze starrer updated from a surfer-scene setting to the world of extreme sports. Aussie actor Bracey played Cobra Commander last year in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and stars in the upcoming Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Best Of Me. Point Break is produced by Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson alongside John Baldecchi, Taylor and Kurt Wimmer. RGM Media’s Devesh Chetty and Marloss Entertainment’s John McMurrick will executive produce. Filming begins this summer. Bracey is repped by CAA, ROAR and Mark Morrissey & Associates.
Luke Bracey is the latest Australian newcomer to score a major role this pilot season. In his first U.S. gig, Bracey (Home And Away), who was pursued by multiple pilots, is set for the young male lead opposite Odette Annable in ABC‘s Romeo & Juliet-esque pilot Westside (formerly Venice), about the haves and the have-nots of California’s most seductive city, Venice. It focuses on two rival families, the Nances and the Carvers, and a forbidden and dangerous romance emerging between them as the families battle for control of Venice. Bracey will play the handsome and sexy Chris Carver. Recently released from a six-year prison term for dealing marijuana, Chris hopes to move to Costa Rica and start his life over — but he finds himself quickly sucked back into the drama of the Carver family… and a romance with the daughter of his family’s chief rival, Sophie Nance (Annable).
Summit Entertainment is bearing down on the male lead in Divergent, the adaptation of the Neil Burger-directed adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel that will star Shailene Woodley. She’s the next hot gal after a breakout performance in The Descendants, followed by scoring the Mary Jane role in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. I’m told that Summit held Divergent “chemistry” readings yesterday that paired Woodley with four young actors: Luke Bracey, Brenton Thwaites, Lucas Till and Jack Reynor.
Since I barely got my high school Regent’s diploma with a 65 in chemistry (at the time it was a jump shot at the buzzer following the 32 I scored in trigonometry), I am the wrong person to ask about who emerged with a leg up by acing this chemistry test. But I think it means we should have a winner shortly, and it likely will be one of these up and comers.
While DreamWorks initially flirted with the idea of The Hunger Games hunk Liam Hemsworth for the lead in its video-game adaptation Need For Speed. Now, they favor a discovery, and they are testing young actors Brenton Thwaites, who stars opposite Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning in the Robert Stromberg-directed Maleficent, and Home And Away‘s Luke Bracey. We’ll let you know how it turns out.
