TCA: The Gritty Reality Of Sex On FX’s ‘Married’ & ‘You’re The Worst’

By | Monday July 21, 2014 @ 12:19pm PDT

TCA: The Gritty Reality Of Sex On FX’s ‘Married’ & ‘You’re The Worst’FX‘s one-two punch of frosh summer comedies Married and You’re The Worst are taking different slants toward sex — one grounded and the other a bold, in-your face approach.

Up for discussion at the network’s TCA Married panel was how the show changed dramatically between its pilot and subsequent episodes in terms of implementing hanky panky in its storylines. In Episode 1 of the Andrew Gurland-created show, Ross Bowman (Nat Faxon) hits an intimacy wall with his wife Lina (Judy Greer), to which she suggests that he venture out and find a mistress. (Spoiler: He failingly does.)

fx_connectedTalking with Deadline after the panel, Gurland said: “The show will became less about their sexual relationship. I found that a good jumping-off point for the series would be a husband saying, ‘We don’t have the intimacy we use to have,’ and there’s this element of, ‘Well, go have sex with other people.’ I wanted to put that to rest by the pilot because that’s not really the answer. That’s not a long-term solution if you want intimacy from your wife, so moving forward we wanted to keep the intimacy between the two of them but not restricted to their sexual relationship. I wanted to keep the show grounded and not go to this paper reality of here’s all this crazy stuff that this normal married guy is going to do.” Read More »

FX To Stop Reporting Live+Same Day Ratings

FX To Stop Reporting Live+Same Day RatingsThis afternoon, the ratings for last night’s premiere of comedy series Married on FX came out. But the network made no mention of that. Instead, FX put out a press release for the Live+3 delivery of the series premiere of drama The Strain. It was accompanied by a note from the network that going forward, it “will no longer issue releases, analysis or comments related to ratings on a Live+Same Day basis.”

2014 Winter TCA Tour - Day 6FX topper John Landgraf, along with Fox’s former chief Kevin Reilly, have been probably the most vocal opponents of the Live+Same Day ratings, slamming them for paining a skewed picture of a show’s performance. “With the exception of sports, news and live events, Live+Same Day ratings no longer accurately reflect the audience delivery for a scripted entertainment program,” FX said in its note about the change in ratings reporting. “We believe they grossly mischaracterize the actual audience due to the multiple data streams and platforms. Therefore, our first acknowledgement of any ratings will be on a Live+3 basis and beyond. That said, while Live+3 delivery still doesn’t measure the total audience, it is a significantly more accurate measurement than Live+Same Day.”

Fox earlier this year also tried to pull away from Live+SD ratings with the introduction of projections for Live+3, Live+7 and a 30-Day Multi-Platform totals. The network continues to issue those every morning though they have not caught on, with Live+SD … Read More »
