Andy Garcia Joins ‘Max Steel’; Dejon LaQuake Cast In ‘Max’

Andy GarciaAndy Garcia has been cast in Max Steel, Dolphin Films’ live-action film based on the Mattel toy line. The story centers on teenager Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his alien companion Steel, who combine special turbo-energy powers to become the superhero Max Steel. Garcia will play Dr. Miles Edwards, a brilliant and mysterious scientist. Ana Villafané also stars. Garcia, who earned an Oscar nom for The Godfather Part III, most recently appeared in Rob The Mob and has a voice role in Rio 2. He next hits the big screen in Let’s Be Cops and Kill The Messenger.

dejon laquakeDejon LaQuake has joined the family adventure film Max, about a dog working with Marines in Afghanistan who returns from service after his handler is killed. The man’s devastated family adopts the dog, who ends up bonding with their troubled son (Josh Wiggins). Together they unravel the secret behind his brother’s death. Thomas Haden Church and Miles Mussenden also star. LaQuake, whose credits include TV’s Bones and is one half of the musical duo 1 Rebel Nation, will play Chuy. Production is expected to start next month in North Carolina for director Boaz Yakin. Dejon is repped by Prestige Talent Agency, DBA Talent and Skrzyniarz & Mallean

BerlinFilmFestival_badgeVera Farmiga has signed on to star in relationship comedy Prima. Even Greenberg wrote the script and is directing the film that was previously known as Dance Of The Mirlitons. The film is prepping for a March start and centers around a 12-year-old girl who shocks everyone when she is accepted into a prestigious school for dancers. While she learns that to get to the top, she must kill or be killed, her mother struggles to acclimate to her posh stomping grounds. The Allegiance Theater’s Daniel Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine are producing along with Karine Martin under her Mediamax banner. Highland Film Group has worldwide sales here in Berlin. Farmiga is repped by CAA, Jon Rubinstein of Authentic Talent and Literary Management, and Jodi Peikoff of Peikoff Mahan.

clea-duvallPrincipal photography is currently underway on another Highland Film Group pic, Ami Canaan Mann’s Your Right Mind with Katherine Heigl and Ben Barnes starring. Joining the cast are Clea DuVall, Sheryl Lee, Emily Alyn Lind and Ryan Bingham. Canaan Mann wrote the script about a modern-day traveling folk singer who puts his dreams of becoming a successful musician on hold when he meets a former country singer fighting for custody of her daughter. EFM: Dolphin Films Launches International Sales Arm; Pacts With IM Global

Dolphinlogo_vectorGearing up for the European Film Market in Berlin next month, the feature division of Bill O’Dowd’s family-based producer Dolphin Entertainment is launching a new sales operation to go by the name of Dolphin Films International. The outfit will operate under a multi-year partnership with IM Global which will provide support and give Dolphin a strong physical presence at markets as well as access to its relationships. Dolphin vet Christine Perrin-Stocco will run the division which kicks off with the live-action feature adaptation of Mattel’s Max Steel. Dolphin is the second sales operation to announce its launch this week; on Tuesday, finance and sales outfit Fortitude International hung its shingle.
