WB has added the MGM-produced Max to its 2015 line-up. The January 30 release follows a wayward teen who befriends the military dog that was partnered to his older brother, a US Marine killed in action in Afghanistan. Remember the Titans‘ Boaz Yakin is directing the film which is now in production with Thomas Haden Church, Lauren Graham, and Josh Wiggins starring. Sheldon Lettich (Lionheart, Double Impact) co-wrote with Yakin. Karen Rosenfelt and Ken Blancato are producing.
EXCLUSIVE: As Alcon Entertainment scrambles to recast the lead Point Break role recently vacated by Gerard Butler, Swedish actor Matias Varela has locked in a supporting role in the upcoming remake. Story updates the Kathryn Bigelow-helmed 1991 original to center on an ex-extreme sports athlete turned FBI trainee assigned to go undercover to investigate a string of robberies by a band of fellow adrenaline junkies. Varela (Snabba Cash, Arne Dahl, The Borgias) will play Grommet, an extreme sports athlete and member of Bodhi’s gang of outlaws. In his native Sweden, Varela earned a Swedish Oscar nod for his turn in the final Snabba Cash film, Livet Deluxe. He’s repped by APA and Agentfirman Planthaber/Kildén.
Bones, The Good Wife, and Pretty Little Liars actor Luke Kleintank has landed a role in MGM’s family adventure Max. The pic follows a Belgian Shepherd Malinois military dog who returns from Afghanistan traumatized by his handler’s death. Adopted by the soldier’s family, he bonds with his fallen partner’s 14-year-old brother. Boaz Yakin is directing from a script he wrote with Sheldon Lettich (Lionheart, Double Impact). Kleintank will play a returning vet who worked with Max, the titular canine. Thomas Hayden Church and Josh Wiggins are already set to star. Andy Garcia has been cast in Max Steel, Dolphin Films’ live-action film based on the Mattel toy line. The story centers on teenager Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his alien companion Steel, who combine special turbo-energy powers to become the superhero Max Steel. Garcia will play Dr. Miles Edwards, a brilliant and mysterious scientist. Ana Villafané also stars. Garcia, who earned an Oscar nom for The Godfather Part III, most recently appeared in Rob The Mob and has a voice role in Rio 2. He next hits the big screen in Let’s Be Cops and Kill The Messenger.

The man’s devastated family adopts the dog, who ends up bonding with their troubled son (Josh Wiggins). Together they unravel the secret behind his brother’s death. Thomas Haden Church and Miles Mussenden also star. LaQuake, whose credits include TV’s Bones and is one half of the musical duo 1 Rebel Nation, will play Chuy. A Belgian Shepherd working in Afghanistan alongside Marines returns from service after his handler is killed. The man’s devastated family adopts the dog — erratic and still suffering from the traumas of war — who ends up bonding with and helping their troubled 14-year-old son, Justin (Wiggins). Together they unravel the secret behind his brother’s death and pull the family together again. Production is expected to start in May in North Carolina. Wiggins, repped by UTA and Leverage Management, starred in the Sundance family drama Hellion opposite Aaron Paul and Juliette Lewis. That pic was acquired by Sundance Selects after it premiered at this year’s fest.
