Playwright A.R. Gurney’s romatic two-hander will return to Broadway for a star-fueled revival beginning September 13 at the Nederlander Theater. Among the pairings for the run are Brian Dennehy and Mia Farrow, launching the show, followed by Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, Carol Burnett, Anjelica Huston, Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg and Martin Sheen. Diana Rigg is appearing with the support of Actors’ Equity Association. The director is two-time Tony winner Gregory Mosher. Producers are Nelle Nugent, Barbara Broccoli, Fredrick Zollo, Olympus Theatricals, Kenneth Teaton and Colleen Camp.
MSNBC announced this morning Ronan Farrow will sit down with Angelina Jolie in London on Friday to discuss her efforts to help end sexual violence in conflict zones. Jolie is the co-host of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence, the largest global meeting ever held on the subject of sexual violence in war. The interview, which will air on Friday’s Ronan Farrow Daily at 1 PM ET, makes perfect sense — Farrow being the son of Mia Farrow, and Mia Farrow being Angelina Jolie before Jolie was Angelina Jolie — an actress well-known for using her celebrity to promote various humanitarian causes. Today’s announcement led to some speculation that Farrow – the son of Woody Allen (or maybe Frank Sinatra, according to mom Mia in an interview last fall with Vanity Fair) – may have a future on MSNBC snagging celebrity interviews.
Farrow needs something new to do at MSNBC, where, in June to date, he’s clocked just 201,000 viewers — 42,000 in the news demo. That’s 27% and 42% lower than his first-month stats which, in turn, were nothing to write home about. First Ronan Farrow slammed the Golden Globes on January 12 for their tribute to Woody Allen, and now the MSNBC host has given a slap to the Oscars. “Tomorrow on Ronan Farrow Daily: exclusive interview with Ellen DeGeneres’s cravat,” said Farrow on Twitter tonight. “Jared Leto continues his steady ascent into being Jesus,” he added about the Best Actor in a Supporting Role winner. “Next year’s Oscars will be three solid hours of pizza delivery,” Farrow said about Ellen’s network time-filler gag.

Truth be told, the snide lame comments might actually help Farrow’s ratings, which haven’t exactly been stellar since his weak February 24 debut. Seems like Farrow’s watching a delayed broadcast of tonight’s Oscars because he also tweeted that “You know what the Oscars needed more of? Montages” and “Pharrell is married to that hat” nearly 45 long minutes after the latter’s performance of his Oscar nominated “Happy” tune happened. Wonder what Farrow or his mother Mia will be saying if Cate Blanchett wins Best Actress for her role in Allen’s Blue Jasmine or if the man himself wins Best Original Screenplay?
Ronan Farrow‘s debut as host of Ronan Farrow Daily on MSNBC scored 216,000 viewers Monday — the cable network’s smallest audience of the day, tied with 10 AM’s Jansing & Co. Farrow — who was recruited, in part, to attract the next generation of news viewers to the network — averaged just 21,000 viewers in the younger 18-49 demo. Among 25- to 54-year-olds, he logged an average of 46,000 viewers. His biggest audience by far was among viewers ages 50 and older — 195,000 of them. That older skew is typical of news programming but might be somewhat surprising given how assiduously he catered to younger viewers during his maiden broadcast.
Farrow recruited fewer viewers — and fewer young ones — than did Andrea Mitchell Reports in its new timeslot. Mitchell’s show logged 223,000 overall viewers, including 48,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo, and 71,000 in the news demo — 25-54. Mitchell’s show, ironically, did not do as well with the 50+ crowd as did Farrow, scoring an average of 174,000 of them. The only program that scored a smaller crowd of 18- to 49-year-olds on MSNBC that day was the show that followed Farrow’s, The Reid Report — the other new program making its debut that day, hosted by Joy Reid. It clocked 262,000 overall viewers, just 14,000 in that younger demo, 38,000 in the news demo, and 245,000 viewers ages 50+.
Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are packing up their chainsaws and heading to Manhattan for Sharknado 2: The Second One, which will trend on Twitter some as-yet-unspecified day in July, Syfy warned today. Not only are Ziering and Reid back, Anthony Ferrante again will direct the screenplay by Thunder Levin, who also wrote Sharknado, so as to make sure the sequel is as craptastic as the original. And Syfy and producer-distributor The Asylum have hired casting director Mike Fenton and his partner Ann Frederick, of Fenton-Frederick Casting, to supervise cameo casting. So, Damon Lindelof, Mia Farrow, and Greg Berlanti — get in touch with them quickly, because shooting begins next month. In Sharknado 2, Syfy says, “a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a ‘sharknado’ on the city’s population and its most iconic sites, with Fin and April the only ones able to save the city.”
Can a PBS documentary actually have a major impact on this year’s Oscar race?
That’s the question I asked writer-director-producer Robert Weide, whose two-part American Masters portrait of Woody Allen begins airing on PBS stations November 20-21. Of course this is perfect timing because Sony Pictures Classics is launching a major Oscar campaign on behalf of what has turned out to be Allen’s most successful film ever, Midnight In Paris, which so far has a domestic gross of $55 million, is critically acclaimed, and is on every pundit’s list of potential Oscar players this year.
Weide is an 11-time Emmy nominee and three-time winner for directing Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as various showbiz docus on W.C Fields, The Marx Brothers and Lenny Bruce (a feature doc for which he also earned an Oscar nomination in 1998). He has tried for decades and finally got unprecedented access and cooperation from Allen and his associates and colleagues in the making of this remarkable documentary on all things Woody. But if you think this was all calculated to impact the Oscars, think again. For SPC, it is just a happy coincidence.

Last year’s Toronto Film Festival started slow for acquisitions, but finished with a flurry of modest distribution deals that served notice the specialty film business had finally pulled out of its nosedive. This year’s festival hasn’t started and already there are fireworks. Deadline broke news yesterday that Harvey Weinstein would start a VOD business, making the acquisitions market for fringe films more competitive; and last night, I heard that a bidding battle had already broken out for the Steve McQueen-directed Shame, which should be sold by the time it screens Sunday. Fox Searchlight is the favorite, Sony Pictures Classics is in the mix and I’ve heard that The Weinstein Company is hovering. Bidding began right after its Telluride screening, and the mid-six figures thrown around yesterday will probably go higher. That’s huge, considering the movie is an unabashed NC-17, McQueen has final cut, and the sex-obsessed protagonist is unlikable. Oh, yeah, and the sellers want it released this year for Oscar consideration to capitalize on Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan’s Oscar-caliber performances.
Does this mean we’re in for a drunken buying frenzy? Hardly, buyers tell me. They are eager to see the films, but say there’s no title here that’s going to guarantee somebody will overpay. They are also mindful that many of last year’s deals turned out to be box office busts. More deals will be made than …
