TCA: Chris Hardwick Wants Tom Hanks, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers For ‘@Midnight’

By | Friday January 10, 2014 @ 11:18am PST

TCADeadline__140109155905__140109183154Chris Hardwick‘s dream guests on his Comedy Central show @midnight: “Jon Hamm, Tom Hanks, Mel Brooks — Joan Rivers would be great,” he answered today at the TCA Winter TV Press Tour. “They just know how to connect with an audience, they’re natural performers. It’s not comedy that drives the show — it’s comfort,” Hardwick said. 2014 Winter TCA Tour - Day 2@midnight uses a rotating lineup of comedians as they battle nightly for meaningless points doled out by host Hardwick, based on their take on the day’s social media and pop culture. Hardwick started his Q&A with a filibuster, walking TV critics though how the game is played — though it’s been on the air for a while now — including one full-on Buzzfeed Brown-nose, in which he asked critics in the room to guess which of three tweets he would read was a real tweet from Buzzfeed’s Kate Aurthur. The tweets also appeared on two screens in the room in letters about a foot tall. Answer: All Three! ”I hate to interrupt, but the show has been on the air for some time — some of us have seen it,” one critic snarked peevishly, speaking for the room. ‘@Midnight’ Opens Well With Comedy Central’s Target Young Guy Crowd

By | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 11:56am PDT

Comedy Central’s new Chris Hardwick-hosted late-night comedy competition strip, @midnight, opened last night with bigger numbers than its The Colbert Report lead-in among the network’s target young male viewers — also appearing to beat broadcasters among males 18-24 and 18-34. @midnight, produced by Funny or Die, scored a substantially smaller overall crowd (549,992 viewers) than did its lead-in The Colbert Report, which itself clocked a smaller crowd than usual (999,833 viewers) — which is no surprise given that it was the show’s first night back after a dark week. But, @midnight came in on par with Colbert among 18-49 year-olds (260,876 and 260,668, respectively). And, among 18-34 guys (153,538), and 18-24 guys (67,943), @m outstripped Colbert (131,442 and 45,871, respectively). Comedy Central also noted its new show beat the October-to-date averages of NBC’s Jay Leno, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel and CBS’s David Letterman in the new show’s half-hour slot, among both 18-24 and 18-34  guys (competitive broadcast stats for last night will be available later today).
