It’s usually a tipoff that something’s wrong when an earnings release talks about how much cash a company gave back to shareholders in a quarter, and then focuses on future endeavors. But in Viacom‘s case, on first glance, the fiscal Q2 results out this morning look merely blah, not bad. Net income at $502M was +5% vs the first three months of 2013, on revenues of $3.17B, +1.2%. The top line was a hair shy of the $3.2B that analysts expected. Earnings at $1.13 a share beat forecasts for $1.05. The main Media Networks business saw operating income rise 9% to $949M on revenues of $2.38B, +6%. Rate hikes to pay TV distributors resulted in an 11% pop in affiliate revenues. Domestic ad sales increased 2% while worldwide was up 3%. The Paramount-led Filmed Entertainment unit told a different story with operating income down 83%, to $11M, on revenues of $831M, down 12%. Viacom attributes the drop to “lower carryover revenue from prior period releases.” The Wolf Of Wall Street didn’t howl enough to prevent a 17% drop in theatrical revenues. Home entertainment fell 30% as the studio offered fewer releases. Since bowing in Korea and Mexico in late March, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah has continued to draw strong numbers overseas. As of Sunday, it had an international cume of $197.4M, and a North American haul of $93M. Paramount and Regency Enterprises today say the biblical epic rose to $207M internationally, and $93.8M domestic through Monday, pushing its worldwide cume to $300.8M. Noah was No. 9 at the North American box office this weekend with $5M at 2,537 theaters. It was No. 5 on the international chart after adding $21.6M from 6,092 runs in 56 markets. The film faced its share of controversy prior to opening, and was even banned in most of the Arab world. Nevertheless, it has hit several milestones in the course of its voyage. Domestically, its opening weekend cume of $44M was the biggest ever U.S. debut for star Russell Crowe. Overseas, the film’s releases in Russia and Brazil became the biggest ever for a non-sequel, and were the 4th biggest openings of all time, with $17.2M and $9.8M, respectively. Did Paramount just officially start the 2014 Oscar campaign even as we are barely getting the Emmys off the ground and the Tonys are two months away? Uh, yes. Looks like it. One top studio exec (not from Paramount) forwarded me an email he got yesterday from the Paramount Awards Office that pronounced free admission starting April 15th - two by two for Academy members and a guest- to screenings of Noah at theaters nationwide – but only Monday thru Thursday since most theater owners usually don’t like to give up seats on the weekends, especially to rich and famous movie types.

Jon Stewart has deconstructed the media’s consternation over Hollywood’s depiction of religion in Noah and Son Of God — particularly Fox News Channel and CNN. Fortunately for Paramount, which distributes Noah, and 20th Century Fox, which distributes Son Of God (a repurposing of History’s hit 10-hour miniseries The Bible), fewer than 3 million people watch Fox News Channel and CNN combined in primetime — leaving about 317 million uninformed people available to buy tickets. This helps explain how Noah topped its opening weekend with nearly $44 million in domestic boxoffice (and $95 million worldwide) despite much hair-tearing over at FNC (and by Glenn Beck, who pronounced it “awful”), and why Son Of God opened with $26 million in domestic boxoffice, though a CNN anchor said it made her feel “kinda dirty and freaky.” Watch Stewart’s takedown here:

UPDATED, MONDAY, 1:00 PM: Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s final numbers are in, and it’s on the low end of the estimate to $95M with international numbers still coming in. But what a huge start overseas: The Disney/Marvel franchise has commanded an estimated international cume of $207.1M, with $32.9M coming this weekend from China alone. So worldwide, it already has grossed $302.1M to date. It’s about 47% ahead of the first Captain America, which made $193.9M overseas and ended its run with $370.5M worldwide in 2011.
Domestically, it should be clear sailing next weekend for Captain America as bowing will be the animated kid’s fare Rio 2 From Fox, which has already hit overseas markets to gross $55.4M. It hasn’t swung into China or Mexico yet. The first Rio made $143M domestically and $484.6M worldwide in 2011. But family audiences are growing weary of both Muppets Most Wanted and Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which have been in the marketplace for three and five weeks, respectively, so its prime time to come out with another family film. In addition, Lionsgate Films’ opens in wide release the Ivan Reitman-directed Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner, who must be exhausted from the number of press junkets he’s had to go through this year with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, 3 Days to Kill and now Draft Day. Blumhouse Prods’ horror flick Oculus from Relativity hopes to mirror the success of Evil Dead. Oculus premiered at Toronto while Evil Dead also went the festival circuit last year at SXSW before bowing in April. In limited release from The Weinstein Company will be opening the Colin Firth-Nicole Kidman starrer Railway Man, the WWII film based on the Eric Lomax’s best-selling book.

Joe: Retaliation, The Croods and Chinese romantic comedy Finding Mr Right were the top three earners. This frame also repped a 19% jump on last weekend. There are no major new wide releases set for next week, although Divergent will continue its overseas rollout hitting Germany, Russia, France and Australia, while Rio 2 takes flight not only in the U.S., but notably lands in China, France and Mexico.

UPDATED, FRIDAY, 8:20 AM: Captain America: The Winter Soldier late nights (starting at 8 p.m.) nabbed a whopping $10.2M last night to push it well past the $100M mark worldwide. The total includes $1.2M from 344 IMAX locations. Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel grossed $9M in late nights — it started at midnight — and went onto gross over $100M on its opening weekend. Other tentpole late nights were The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug ($8.8M for a $73.6M opening), and Thor: The Dark World” ($7.1M for an $85.7M weekend bow). Estimates for the debut weekend gross for Captain America is around $85M+ now. Divergent (LGF/SUMMIT) took in roughly $1.5M last night on locations to push its gross to $101M as it heads into its third weekend of release. These two pictures are battling for the same 20-something demo, but Captain America is expected to crush everything in sight. At the moment, it ranks fourth as the top Marvel pre-sellers on Fandango, right behind Iron Man 2 which opened with a $128.1M in May of 2010 and above Thor: The Dark World. Academy members will get the chance this weekend to see Noah and The Grand Budapest Hotel when their official Academy screening program finally resumes after a break for Oscar. But while the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at the Academy’s Beverly Hills headquarters is undergoing major renovations, the screenings have moved to Hollywood at the Acad’s much smaller Linwood Dunn Theater at its Pickford Center For Motion Picture Study on Vine Street. That’s a loss of about 700 seats, so it could get dicey, especially since no extra screenings are added and RSVPs aren’t taken. For a lot of films the Academy screens, 300 seats is just fine, but these fall squarely in the hotter want-to-see category, and it’s still first-come-first-served, just as it is at the Wilshire Boulevard location. Could get nasty for members wanting a free screening. Better get there early, folks.
Of course this is not exactly crunch time for serious 2014 Oscar contenders, so distributors need not worry too much about disgruntled voters getting turned away from their hot-button potential nominees. But recently I got an email from a veteran Oscar campaign consultant who asked the simple question, “Is NOAH a contender?” And it got me wondering if not only director Darren Aronofsky’s towering epic, which screens Sunday at 3 PM, but also Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel, which runs Saturday at 7:30 PM both might actually have a decent shot at racking up numerous nominations, including Best Picture, despite their first quarter release dates (Noah opened March 28 and Budapest has been playing since March 7th). Both are doing extremely well at the box office and riding high with critics too (Noah is 77% fresh and Budapest is 91% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes) and have the kind of first-rate production values to which Oscar voters usually pay serious attention.

UPDATED, MONDAY, 1:25 PM: The final numbers are in and Paramount’s Noah grossed $43.7M (which includes strong Thursday late nights that started at 7 PM of $1.6M). Freestyle Releasing’s God’s Not Dead did, in fact, rise into the Top 5 and was down only 5% from last weekend, having added theaters, but still a very respectable showing in its second weekend with a solid $7,468 per screen. “It took a village to market the movie,” said Freestyle co-president Mark Borde. “On every conference call there were about 20 people on the conference call.” Pure Flix, a faith-based producer of product, produced this picture and it used a marketing company called Working Title Agency in Tennessee to come up with a very arresting one-sheet. “They also had a pre-sales group for tickets and a social media team, just various individuals that managed the YouTube and Twitter and Facebook. To be honest, there is no way to quantify the results of social media, but in this case, I have to say that I believe the social media aspect is a very strong contributor,” Borde said. “The Facebook had over a million likes and they weren’t bought. Not one penny was spent and at any given time, there were over 700,000 talking it at any given time.” It was also trending on Twitter No. 5 and Fandango as No. 3, said Borde, who added God’s Not Dead was actually tracking in the past two weeks.
“We knew that when we showed up in tracking we were going to do OK, but not this OK,” said Borde. “If you add all that together, we had a sense that we were going to be very strong in the marketplace. But the key to success in this movie is word-of-mouth. It’s the reason it’s held. We had the smallest drop of any movie from Saturday to Sunday on the first weekend and on the second weekend – Son Of God was our model and we had the smallest drop again. What that tells me is — we didn’t increase the buys or advertising — that’s word of mouth. That’s better than anything you can buy. There’s a lot of luck in the movie business, but Duck Dynasty stars were embroiled in a big controversy right before this happened and they were on the front page and we had the first movie they were in.” They also had the very popular Chrstian pop rock band Newsboys. Freestyle Releasing will add about 200 theaters this weekend.
The Grand Budapest Hotel from Fox Searchlight expanded well with an $8.5M take for a per-screen average of $8,741. Opening next weekend is the Disney/Marvel franchise Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is expected to take all of the air out of the box office as it opens wide and pull in the same demo as Divergent which had two good weekends in a row for Lionsgate and Summit grossing a total of $94.3M. Tracking already shows Captain America at anywhere from $80M-$85M or higher and it has already grossed more than $75M internationally since bowing this past weekend. It’s a total shoot-em-up and more bullets than there are extras in the film. Keeping the previous chart below so anyone who wants to can compare the estimates with the final numbers. Joe; Retaliation debuted with just over $80M in 54 markets; Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $75.2M take this weekend came from just 32 markets. The Croods and Jack The Giant Slayer were also big players overseas in 2013. Rounding out the Top 5 after Captain America 2, this weekend’s big draws were Noah, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Rio 2 and Need For Speed. Next week, Divergent adds the UK, Italy and Mexico, among others. It’s already playing in about 18 smaller markets outside the U.S., but numbers are being kept close to the vest by Lionsgate until the bigger bows. After the strong staying power of this weekend’s God’s Not Dead and the stronger than expected opening of Paramount Pictures’ Noah following on the heels of the surprise opening of Fox’s Son of God earlier this year, is there any doubt anymore Hollywood that if you build it, they will come? That’s three for three … but wait, actually there’s more. Back in 2008, the Kirk Cameron-starring Fireproof from filmmaker and associate pastor of the Sherwood Church, Alex Kendrick, took a lot of people by surprise. On a $500,000 budget raised by the church, the faith-based picture ended up grossing $33.4M when it was released by Samuel Goldwyn. They did it again in 2011, when on a $2M budget, TriStar released Courageous that opened to $9.1M and went onto make $34.5M. Before that, in 2004, the Mel Gibson-directed The Passion of the Christ opened to $83.8M domestically and went on to gross $611M worldwide.

‘Noah’ Late Nights Tally $1.6M On Road To No. 1, ‘Divergent’ Expected at No. 2, Third May Be ‘Budapest Hotel’ Or Schwarzenegger-Starrer ‘Sabotage’
The dark epic Darren Aronofsky film Noah got off to a good start domestically last night in late nights that started at 7 PM taking in an estimated $1.6M for Paramount and New Regency. Also, word is from distributors that the early matinees in N.Y. look good. The opening of Noah doesn’t reflect the numbers or the group sales that Son of God had for Fox. That faith-based pic surprised everyone last month when it took in $1.2M from shows that began at 10 p.m. So, in other words, Noah is opening more like a mainstream studio movie, which is not surprising given that it stars Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. The demo on the picture is definitely skewing older and Paramount is comparing it to Gravity, noting that Noah is playing just above it — Gravity made $1.4M in late nights. However, Gravity started at 10 p.m. for Warner Bros. so had less playtime and neither its opening weekend nor its gross is expected to touch Gravity, which opened to $55M and went on to make $273.1M domestically. Tracking has it anywhere between $40M and $45M for the 3-day domestically but others have it in the high 30s, so after more grosses come in tonight, everyone will have a better estimate.
Noah already opened overseas in Mexico (where the Catholic faith is prominent) and Korea to a combined $14M. The movie grossed $8.3M at 500 dates for the No. 1 …
Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, which bowed to big numbers in Mexico and Korea last week, was not accepted for release in most of the Arab world which cited contradictions with the teachings of Islam. Indonesia, which has a heavy Muslim majority, has become the latest territory to join the fray. A member of the local censorship board told AFP today that the film was rejected over similar concerns as the other countries which have opted to ban the movie. The depiction of prophets is forbidden under Islamic law and, as well as being a biblical figure, Noah is also a Koranic prophet. “The visual depiction of a prophet is forbidden in Islam,” Zainut Tauhid Saadi told the news agency, adding: “The film will hurt both Christian and Muslim communities.” Noah had been slated for release on March 28, but has been pulled from schedules, the Jakarta Globe reports. (The movie is likely to still be seen given the wide availability of bootleg copies of Western films. 6TH UPDATE, MON, 12:43 PM PT: Final numbers are in now for The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Monuments Men as well as Ride Along, 300: Rise of an Empire and The Lego Movie (which grossed more than previously thought). Final numbers also came in Monday night for Oscar Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave which added another $3.9M to raise its international cume to $121.7M, most of its gross has come from the U.K. with $32.7M; the film has made $178M worldwide. Lionsgate opened Divergent in 18 international markets, but are not releasing numbers as yet. We are using Rentrak which has five small territories (see below for more info on that). Lionsgate, as they always do, pre-licensed international so there are many distributors handling the film in their prospective territories. The big territory rollout for Divergent will be April 4 in the U.K., Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Mexico, and Finland, followed April 11 by France, Germany, Russia, Australia, Denmark and Norway.
The trades got into it this week with Variety floating the boat that Noah star Russell Crowe‘s attempt to meet Pope Francis was spurned by the Vatican, while THR refuted that was ever real because of the feeling Crowe’s stardom would attract too much attention. So what’s the truth? Deadline has learned that Noah star Crowe, director Darren Aronofsky and Paramount executive Rob Moore did in fact get to meet Pope Francis today, after the Vatican extended an olive branch and hosted the trio in the official VIP section of this morning’s Udienza.
I think the studio was a little coy earlier in the week. This was something that Aronofsky wanted to do after he’d just made this Biblical epic. He was going to be near Rome promoting it, and has been moved by the Pope’s message of tolerance, feeding the poor and preserving the planet. But they didn’t want it to seem they were after some cheesy photo op to promote a Biblical movie. I’d heard those same rumors and called Monday, but I guess I’m glad I waited to see what would actually happen. Aronofsky was certainly moved by the experience.
Paramount has released the second trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical epic Noah starring Russell Crowe. Co-star Emma Watson intros the latest look at the pic after the trailer debuted earlier in the day on her social media feeds. There’s been plenty of back and forth on the Paramount-New Regency pic in a long lead-up, and now the release date of March 28 is just a couple weeks away. Until then check out the trailer, complete with the new explanatory message it is attaching to marketing material after consultation with the National Religious Broadcasters group:
