A&E’s reality series Storage Wars launched its second season last night with back-to-back epsodes at 10 PM and 10:30 PM. The 10:30 PM episode drew 5.1 million viewers, 2.9 million of them in each of the 18-49 and 25-54 demographics, to become A&E’s most watched telecast of all time in total viewers and in the 2 key demos. The 10 PM episode was watched by 4.5 million viewers.
TV Land’s flagship comedy series Hot In Cleveland launched the second part of its second season last night with 2.4 million total viewers at 10 PM. That was exactly half of the scorching 4.8 million viewers the sitcom logged for its series premiere last summer. It was also down from the 2.95 million the series starring Betty White posted for its second season opener in January. Still, Hot In Cleveland delivered a very respectable audience for a cable comedy and provided a great lead-in for TV Land’s new original comedy series Happily Divorced. The sitcom starring Fran Drescher held onto 100% of its lead-in, pulling in 2.4 million viewers at 10:30 PM. That was higher than the debut of TV Land’s Retired at 35 in January, which logged 2 million viewers launching behind the season premiere of Hot in Cleveland. Retired at 35 has been renewed for a second season.
Last night’s premiere of ABC’s newest drama Switched At Birth broke the network’s ratings records for a series debut in total viewers and all key demos. It drew 3.3 million viewers and 1.0 million/1.5 rating in adults 18-34 at 9 PM. (The show, about two teen girls who were accidentally switched at birth, also posted new premiere records in women 18-34, adults and women 18-49). Switched At Birth outpaced ABC Family’s previous record holders, the debuts of The Secret Life of the American Teenager in total viewers (2.8 million) and Pretty Little Liars in adults 18-34 (837,000) and women 18-34. Switched at Birth‘s total premiere night audience for the 9 PM and 10 PM airings was 4.9 million. Switched at Birth is the first of 4 new series ABC Family will unspool this summer, along with Chloe, The Lying Game and State of Georgia.
Breakout Kings completed its Cinderella story with a record debut on A&E. The show, which was rescued by A&E after Fox passed on the pilot in May, drew the highest demo numbers for an A&E drama series, 1.5 million adults 18-49 and 1.6 million adults 25-54. That was up 25% in adults 18-49 and 14% in adults 25-54 from the previous network record holder, the July 2010 debut of the network’s The Glades. In 18-49, Breakout Kings outperformed recent cable scripted premieres, including that of USA’s Fairly Legal. In total viewers, Breakout Kings drew 2.8 million, short of The Glades‘ record of 3.6 million. “Breakout Kings is a smart, action-packed drama with great storytelling and authentic well-drawn characters,” said Bob DeBitetto, …
