ravenswoodI’ve learned that ABC Family has opted not to renew the Pretty Little Liars spinoff series Ravenswood for a second season. The project received a straight-to-series order from the previous ABC Family regime and had a solid launch behind the Pretty little Liars’ Halloween special in October with 2.1 million viewers. But, with no PLL lead-in, the series lost momentum, dropping to a 1.1 million for its fall finale. By the time it was paired again with PLL in January, Ravenswood couldn’t regain its ratings footing, opening its January mini-season with 1.7 million viewers, half of the 3.2 million viewers for its lead-in, PLL. Set in the fictional town of Ravenswood, Pennsylvania, Ravenswood followed five strangers whose lives become intertwined by a deadly curse. Nicole Gale Anderson, Tyler Blackburn, Steven Cabral, Brett Dier, Britne Oldford and Merritt Patterson starred. This marks the first cancellation decision for ABC Family under new president Tom Ascheim, who took over in December.

Back in August, Pretty Little Liars clocked its biggest summer-finale crowd in viewers 12-34, 18-34, and 18-49, as well as total viewers (3.3 million). In the finale episode, the Liars got a riddle from “A” that sends them to Ravenswood, where one of them disappeared during a magic show, and a shocking discovery proved everything they thought they knew about “A” and the “A-Team” might be wrong and that the Liars may have just started World War A. American Horror Story alumna Britne Oldford has been cast in ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars spinoff Ravenswood as a regular, playing Remy, who can fit anywhere but doesn’t belong to any one crowd. Inquisitive and determined, she won’t stop looking for the truth until she finds it. The spinoff takes place in Ravenswood, near Liars‘ hometown of Rosewood, PA, and revolves around five strangers who are connected by the curse that has plagued Ravenswood for generations. Oldford is with Gersh.

Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone have joined the cast of FX’s American Horror Story: Coven. The two join Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Francis Conroy, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Gabourney Sidibe. Recently in Olympus Has Fallen, Bassett — repped by Gersh, Lighthouse and Fox Rothschild — next will be seen in Black Nativity and White Bird in a Blizzard.

Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon A Time) has joined the cast of TNT’s drama Murder In The First as a series regular. The first confirmed resident of ABC Family‘s Ravenswood is bad boy Caleb Rivers. Pretty Little Liars co-star Tyler Blackburn will be joining the series’ upcoming spinoff. The series hails from the same auspices as Pretty Little Liars: Warner Horizon, Alloy and executive producers Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick and Joseph Dougherty. The new series takes place in Ravenswood, a town near Liars‘ hometown of Rosewood PA, and revolves around five strangers who are connected by the curse that has plagued Ravenswood for generations. Caleb (Blackburn) will travel to Ravenswood in the third annual Liars Halloween special in October, which will be used to introduce Ravenswood and its inhabitants and launch the new series. Blackburn, repped by Gersh and James Feldman & Cynthia Farrelly Gesner, has been a PLL fan favorite. He has been on the hit drama since the end of the first season, upped to a regular after Season 2. He will appear in every episode of PLL‘s upcoming fourth season this summer before segueing to Ravenswood.

ABC Family‘s flagship drama Pretty Little Liars is becoming a franchise. The cable network has given a straight to series order to Ravenswood, a spinoff drama from top-rated Pretty Little Liars, which has been renewed for a fifth season ahead of its fourth season premiere. Ravenswood hails from the same auspices as Pretty Little Liars: Warner Horizon Television and executive producers Marlene King, who developed Liars based on the Alloy books; Oliver Goldstick; Joseph Dougherty; and Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein. Written by Liars co-showrunners King and Goldstick and Dougherty, the spinoff takes place in Ravenswood, a town near Liars‘ hometown of Rosewood PA, which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations. Ravenswood will premiere in October following the third annual Liars Halloween special. I hear the special will be used to introduce Ravenswood and its inhabitants.

The recent Season 3 finale of Liars hit a season high in teens (6.9 rating). It also became the #1 “most social” series episode on record, according to SocialGuide, and the first series episode to amass more than 1 million total airtime tweets (1,099,815) in TV history. Season 3 was Pretty Little Liars‘ most-watched season ever in adults 18-34 (1.7 rating), women 18-34 (2.8 rating) and women 18-49 (1.9 rating), and was ABC Family’s most-watched original series installment ever in its target 18-34 demo.
