David Cronenberg’s ‘Maps To The Stars’ Locates More Cast
David Cronenberg’s upcoming Maps To The Stars has added Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams and The Killing‘s Evan Bird. They are joining Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in the ghost story that’s said to be a scathing attack on celebrity-obsessed LA. Bird is playing a troubled child star with Williams as his manipulative mother and Wasikowska as his disfigured, schizophrenic, fame-obsessed sister. Bruce Wagner penned the script. Sales kick off in Cannes via eOne Films International with production to start in July. EOne and Prospero Pictures are co-financing and Prospero’s Martin Katz is producing with SBS Productions’ Saïd Ben Saïd. Read More »

Bruce Brown’s Motorcycle Docu ‘On Any Sunday’ Gets Sequel Revved Up By Son Dana Brown

EXCLUSIVE: Red Bull Media House and Freeride Entertainment are behind On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter, which will act as a follow-up to Bruce Brown‘s quintessential 1971 motorcycle racing movie that was nominated for a Documentary Feature Oscar and featured Steve McQueen. Brown is the filmmaker behind the iconic 1966 surfing docu Endless Summer and its sequel, and his fellow-filmmaker son Dana Brown (Step Into Liquid, Dust To Glory) will direct The Next Chapter with Bruce serving as executive producer. The film is expected to begin shooting this month in Austin before spreading out Austria, the Czech Republic, Vietnam, Argentina, South Africa, Canada and Spain. It will feature such current stars of the two-wheeled sport like X Games staples Travis Pastrana and Robbie Maddison, Spanish MotoGP champ Mark Marquez, and supercross star James “Bubba” Stewart, with more to be added.

“In I971, On Any Sunday made me want to become a filmmaker”, Dana Brown said. “Not because my Dad had made the film, but because it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I had never imagined making another On Any Sunday. … the chance to tell a completely unique story that still has all the hallmarks of the original. The heart, soul and passion have not changed, but the level of performance and the technology to convey that certainly has.”

YouTube’s Red Bull Channel Reports 52M Views For Felix Baumgartner’s Space Jump; Discovery Coverage Sets Record

UPDATED: That astronomical number for Red Bull Channel is a milestone for the YouTube video platform, as well as a marketing bonanza for the energy drink company. The number of online views for the jump was roughly equal to the combined, full-week views for the 35 most popular Google-funded YouTube channels two weeks ago as measured by Deadline.com’s weekly tally. (Last week’s numbers were skewed by the burst of Red Bull visits October 9, when the jump was originally scheduled. It was aborted due to high winds.) It also topped the 7.6 million total viewers who tuned in for Discovery Channel‘s live coverage. The online channel from Red Bull Media House says that it has more than 750,000 subscribers, and added 180,000 over the last seven days. The company previously reported that the jump attracted 8M concurrent online viewers.

Meanwhile, Discovery’s live coverage was the highest-rated, non-primetime program in the network’s history, and also was the top non-sports non-prime cable program in adults 18-49 and other key demos Sunday. Coverage on Discovery’s Velocity network drew almost 1 million viewers, making it that network’s highest-rated telecast ever.

Gravitas Ventures Teams With Red Bull Media House On Action Sports Docus

Los Angeles, August 21, 2012–Gravitas Ventures announced today a comprehensive multi-year licensing arrangement that will allow action sports documentary films from Red Bull Media House (RBMH) to be enjoyed by movie lovers across the US and Canada on Video on Demand (VOD). Key titles included in the deal include films The Art of Flight (2D and 3D versions), Strength in Numbers, Congo: The Grand Inga Project, We…A Collection of Individuals, Where the Trail Ends and Bending Colours.

The partnership enables RBMH to release select films in theatres while Gravitasdistributes simultaneously or “day and date” in 100+ million Video On Demand homes. As part of the arrangement, RBMH’s deep library may also be licensed to growing subscription and ad-sponsored VOD offerings.

“For more than 20 years Red Bull has been committed to producing and acquiring content focused on the most exciting elements of sports, culture, and lifestyle. Outside Television Partners With Red Bull Media House For Action Lifestyle Shows

Red Bull Media House needed a new home for its action sports and lifestyle shows after one of its biggest customers, Fox’s Fuel TV, decided late last year to focus on mixed martial arts programming. That led to today’s announcement: The content creation unit at the company that produces the well-known energy drink says it forged a “long-term programming partnership” with independent channel Outside Television. It plans to offer the original adventure sports series Pushing Boundaries, and other programs about skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and surfing. “By uniting our media interests and unique reach, Red Bull Media House and Outside create a significant opportunity to better serve the already deeply devoted and also scoring legions of new converts,” says Outside SVP for programming Rob Faris. “This is only the first iteration of what we anticipate becoming a very significant strategic relationship.” The network, launched in 2010 with help from the publisher of Outside Magazine, is beginning to expand beyond its core markets: it reaches about 6M homes mostly in resort communities. Comcast said last month that it will offer the channel throughout its systems on a special sports tier.
