EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-nominated actress Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Jennifer Ferrin (The Cape), Robbie Jones (Hellcats) and Keon Mohajeri have been added to Syfy’s two-hour pilot Rewind, joining previously cast Shane McRae. Written by Justin Marks and directed by Jack Bender, Rewind revolves around a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to alter past events in order to change the future and avoid a devastating terrorist attack. Castle-Hughes, repped by Industry Entertainment, will play Priya, the team’s a-typical historian, a behavioral anthropologist who provides analytical context to the project and the missions, and whose knowledge of history extends beyond the boundaries of facts. Ferrin, repped by Gersh and TMT Entertainment, will play Bryce, a brilliant scientist who graduated MIT when she was 18; the smartest person in the room who is obsessive and driven and doesn’t really care what people think of her. EXCLUSIVE: Dexter alumna Julie Benz will star opposite Grant Bowler Bowler in the Syfy series Defiance. Tony Curran (Pillars Of The Earth), Jaime Murray and Stephanie Leonidas also have been cast in the live-action drama, written/executive produced by Rockne S. O’Bannon, Kevin Murphy and Michael Taylor, which was developed concurrently with an online video game. Set on a future Earth, Defiance is set in a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Benz, repped by ICM and Vincent Cirrincione, will play Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic newly appointed mayor of the mining boomtown who is determined to maintain peace in the community.
Lost director Jack Bender is set to direct and executive produce Syfy’s two-hour pilot Rewind, a thriller about a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who use untested technology to travel back in time to alter past events in hopes of changing the future after a nuclear bomb destroys New York City. Bender will executive the pilot with its writer, Justin Marks, Tom Spezialy, Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun for Universal Cable Prods and BermanBraun. This marks a reunion for Bender and Syfy, UCP & BermanBraun — he also directed the pilot for their series Alphas. Here are some of the latest pilot director hires on the broadcast side:
Charles McDougall, who has directed the pilots for such hourlong series as Desperate Housewives, The Good Wife and The Chicago Code, is taking on a half-hour pilot this season, helming Mindy Kaling’s single-camera Fox pilot. The Office player stars as a young Bridget Jones-type Ob/Gyn balancing personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small office. The two previously worked together on The Office,where McDougall has directed half a dozen episodes.
EXCLUSIVE: In its first pilot pickup in more than an year, Syfy has given the green light to Rewind, an action thriller from feature writer Justin Marks, BermanBraun and Universal Cable Prods. Rewind, which has received an order for a two-hour pilot, revolves around a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to alter past events in order to change the future and avoid a devastating terrorist attack. Marks wrote the script and will executive produce the pilot with veteran showrunner Tom Spezialy (Chaos), Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. This marks Syfy’s first original pilot order since the 2010 duo of Alphas and Three Inches, one of which, Alphas, went to series and has been renewed for a second season. Like Rewind, Alphas hails from BermanBraun and UCP. “We couldn’t be happier to be back in business with BermanBraun,” said Mark Stern, Syfy’s president of original content. “Justin Marks has created a time-travel series with an exciting innovative approach that really exemplifies Syfy’s commitment to bring compelling storytelling to life.” Production on Rewind is set to begin in April.
