Rotten Tomatoes Expands Into TV Reviews

Rotten Tomatoes‘ film recommendations are often hit and miss, so the question is how much stock will be put in the much more nebulous world of TV series reviews? The aggregator site, acquired by Warner Bros in 2011 and run through the social movie site Flixster, will launch TV Zone beginning tomorrow (parts of the service will go live this evening) offering reviews of full seasons of primetime scripted TV series. The parameters for a good score will be similar to the site’s movie rules: to be “Certified Fresh” a series must have 60% positive reviews, and the same cutoffs apply. But film and TV are different and there will be growing pains on how to apply the site’s processes to the TV side. “We’re doing reviews at the season level the way most critics do”, editor-in-chief Matt Atchity tells Deadline. “We’re still discussing how to handle [individual show] recaps and how that will impact the Tomatometers”. At launch, the site will provide coverage of “all the reviews we can find” for the previous four years of a show. Warner Bros Civil War? Its Rotten Tomatoes Suspends Comments On Its ‘Dark Knight Rises’ After Movie Reviewers Threatened

Warner Bros owns Rotten Tomatoes (through the social movie site Flixster.com). Warner Bros also owns The Dark Knight Rises (with co-financier Legendary Pictures). Now the studio finds itself with the weird and rare dilemma of protecting movie reviewers who hated the movie from furious Rotten Tomatoes readers. AP reports tonight that RottenTomatoes.com for the first time ever suspended user comments today on movie reviews of the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s  Batman trilogy hitting theaters Friday. Why? Because the comments savaged and threatened those critics who wrote negative reviews, including Marshall Fine of Hollywood & Fine, Christy Lemire of The Associated Press, and Nick Pinkerton of the Village Voice. However the movie overall has an 84% positive rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Matt Atchity, the site’s editor-in-chief, told the AP: ”It just got to be too much hate.” There’s no doubt that RottenTomatoes.com is a controversial site – and even more so now. Atchity also told The AP he is worried about a similar backlash when director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released later this year. “We may do away with comments completely or get to a place where comments are only activated after a movie opens.”

Flixster And Rotten Tomatoes Bought By Warner Bros Home Entertainment Today





BURBANK, Calif., May 4, 2011 – Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group today announced an agreement to acquire Flixster, the movie discovery application company with over 25 million worldwide users per month. The acquisition also includes Rotten Tomatoes website devoted to film reviews, information and news. OSCAR: Critics Keep Friending ‘The Social Network’ While Picture Rivals Keep Fretting

In an era where review aggregation sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have erased individuality and replaced it with a percentage statistic that can be quoted  more easily than the words of Roger Ebert or other name reviewers, we are seeing a pack mentality emerge with critics groups come awards time. No matter which region of the country, they all seem to be moving in step with each other for the most part. For David Fincher this has to be especially sweet. Just two years ago he sat on the sidelines as nearly all these groups lined up for Danny Boyle and Slumdog Millionaire against his highly touted The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. When Oscar time rolled around there was no question which film would win. Now it’s hard to find a single critics group that doesn’t want to friend The Social Network — and rivals in this still very fluid race are feeling the pain, no doubt trying to figure out how to counter it all before it’s too late.
