EXCLUSIVE: In what becomes the second significant domestic distribution deal on the eve of Cannes, Lionsgate closed a deal with Exclusive Media for North American distribution rights to the Hammer production of The Quiet Ones, the John Pogue-directed supernatural thriller that stars Mad Men‘s Jared Harris and Sam Claflin, who starred in the last Pirates Of The Caribbean. Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman wrote the script with Pogue.
This follows Warner Bros’ deal for the Ryan Gosling-directed How To Catch A Monster. The Quiet Ones will open April 25, 2014. Pogue wrote the script and Exclusive’s Tobin Armbrust and Simon Oakes will produce with James Gay-Rees, Steven Chester Prince and Ben Holden of The Travelling Picture Show Company. Lionsgate already had UK rights. It’s a nice start for Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. The film is inspired by true events, and tells the story of a prof who uses controversial methods and engages his students in an attempt to raise a poltergeist from negative human energy. When Sam Claflin had to drop out of Belle due to a date clash with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, it created an opportunity for another young actor. Sam Reid has taken over to play the lead role of John Daviner in Amma Assante’s Belle. The film tells the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a mixed race girl raised as an aristocratic lady in 18th Century and who fell in love with a man of high social standing (Reid). All of this happens in the backdrop of a legal case that helped end slavery in England. The film stars Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, Sarah Gadon, Penelope Wilton, Tom Felton and James Norton. Shooting begins September 24 with Damian Jones producing and funding from the BFI Film Fund.
There is precedent for Reid following Claflin. The latter graduated as the star student of the prestigious LAMDA in 2009 and Reid did the same thing the following year. He was cast in Anonymous while still a student in his final year. Reid just finished filming The Railway Man, opposite Sellan Skarsgard, Jeremy Irvine, Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. He also is in the Susanne Bier-directed Serena opposite Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (sellers showed a promo reel yesterday here at Toronto) and he was in Hatfields & McCoys. Reid is repped by Luber Roklin, UK-based The Rights House and Australia-based RGM Artists … Read More »
This one took awhile, but Sam Claflin has finally been set for the role of Finnick, a key piece of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. He had been the favorite for the last month, but he had a problem with an option owed to another studio that presented date problems. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter star Ben Walker, Boyd Holbrook and Tyler Hoechlin were the other competitors for that role, but Claflin’s schedule cleared and the Snow White And The Huntsman and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides star now has a done deal.
Santa Monica, CA, August 22, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Sam Claflin has been cast in the role of Finnick in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. Charasmatic and clever, Finnick was a District 4 Hunger Games victor when he was fourteen.
After breaking out in his role as the romantic lead in last year’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Claflin starred in the box office smash SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN playing Prince William alongside Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. He recently finished filming THE QUIET ONES opposite Jarred Harris, and MARY & MARTHA, in which he co-stars with Hilary Swank.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along
