Former Disney star and recording artist Selena Gomez has exited as a client of CAA and has signed with WME. The 21-year-old singer and ex-Wizards of Waverly Place actress has also signed with Brillstein Entertainment Partners as she restructures her team and transitions from teen star to more adult projects. I hear the change has been long in the works as Gomez has taken meetings around town with various management firms. Last year she made a bold leap playing a partying coed in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. Gomez has a huge social media following, with 57.9M Facebook fans and 19.3M Twitter followers. She’ll next be seen in William H. Macy’s directorial debut, Rudderless, which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Gomez continues to be repped by attorney P.J. Shapiro.
The company has picked U.S. rights to Tim Garrick’s comedy about a guy who’s so smitten that he makes a bet with a mobster’s son. Vertical Entertainment plans an August theatrical release for Behaving Badly, which stars Nat Wolff as the guy trying to land the woman of his dreams (Selena Gomez). Along the way he deals with his best friend’s randy mom (Elisabeth Shue), his drug-abusing boss (Dylan McDermott), a perverted principal (Patrick Warburton), a priest with a ecret (Jason Lee), a sultry defense attorney (Heather Graham), and a patron saint who dispenses cryptic advice (Mary-Louise Parker). Cary Elwes and Gary Busey also co-star. Garrick wrote the screenplay with Scott Russell based on Ric Browde’s book While I’m Dead … Feed The Dog. Andrew Lazar and Miri Yoon produced the pic, which was executive produced by Barry Quart and Kevin Tang. Vertical’s recent films include Anna (Mindscape), Hairbrained and Boys of Abu Ghraib.
UPDATE, 7:52 PM: Reddit is looking a little red-faced today. After alleging Wednesday that someone at Warner Bros was trying to game comments and postings about the about-to-open driving thriller Getaway on the social news and entertainment site, Reddit is now changing its tune. The site said tonight that neither Warners nor anyone working for it actually had anything to do with the supposed under-handed marketing move. After looking into the matter more and likely fielding some calls from WB lawyers, Reddit updated its original post with the following statement late Thursday:
After further investigation, we have found that neither Warner Bros. nor any of their employees was involved in this activity. To be perfectly clear, the posts that we detected came from a third party who had no affiliation with Warner Bros. This third party was not part of the marketing efforts of Warner Bros for the film. We regret confusion about the source of these posts, and appreciate the cooperation and understanding of Warner Bros who has taken this as seriously as we do and has very strict policies on these matters.
Warner Bros. and Dark Castle Entertainment close out the summer with Getaway, an action thriller starring Ethan Hawke as an ex-race car driver who commandeers a Shelby Cobra Mustang and its owner (Selena Gomez) in order to save his kidnapped wife. Courtney Solomon directed from a script by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker. WB releases the pic August 30. Check out the first trailer:

The Wizards Of Waverly Place and star Selena Gomez couldn’t quite capture the magic of the hit franchise’s heyday. Last night’s Disney Channel original movie The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, delivered 5.9 million total viewers. That was less than half the audience of the 2009 TV movie Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie (13.5 million), which ranks as the #2 cable TV movie ever (behind High School Musical 2). Still, Alex vs. Alex did better than recent Disney Channel films like Girl Vs. Monster (4.9 million) and Let It Shine (5.7 million). It delivered 2.9 million Kids 2-11, 2.3 million Kids 6-11 and 2.2 million Tweens 9-14, ranking as the #1 cable TV telecast of 2013 to date in Tweens 9-14, the #2 cable TV telecast in Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11, and the #1 kids’ cable TV telecast in Total Viewers. The hourlong special buoyed an all-new episode of Gravity Falls to a series high in Total Viewers (4.5 million). It posted its #2 telecast ever in Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million) and #3 telecast in Kids 2-11 (2.5 million).
Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens are girls gone wild in the just-released, redband-worthy international trailer (via French co. Mars Distribution) for Harmony Korine‘s R-rated Day-Glo coed crime romp, which sneaks racier peeks at what the domestic previews have held back: Drug use, nudity, guns galore, and gratuitous f-bombs dropped by soon-to-be-former tween idols. James Franco also stars as a blinged-out thug rapper with gold in his grill and a gleam in his eye. Spring Breakers releases stateside March 22 via A24 and Annapurna Pictures. Watch it now:

Warner Bros has scheduled the action-crime movie Getaway for August 30, 2013. Selena Gomez plays a hacker who helps him, and Jon Voight is the bad guy. It’s directed by Courtney Solomon and Yaron Levy, and written by Gregg Maxwell Parker and Sean Finegan. The storyline takes the Russo family and friends to Tuscany, Italy, to meet their long-lost relatives, but when Alex (Gomez) tries to prove she’s more than a seemingly carefree young wizard, she inadvertently conjures a spell that creates a Good Alex and an Evil Alex. When Evil Alex gets roped into a foreboding plan to take over the world, Good Alex must find a way to save her family and humankind, which leads to a monumental battle between the two versions of herself — all atop the Tower of Pisa.
Sony Pictures Animation has released a longer theatrical trailer for Hotel Transylvania which features Adam Sandler voicing Dracula and Selena Gomez as his daughter Mavis plus Sandler’s That’s My Boy (ahem) co-star Andy Samberg as an intrusive human who stumbles upon the monster retreat. Genndy Tartakovsky, known for animated TV shows Dexter’s Laboratory and others, makes his feature directing debut. Voice cast also features Kevin James as Frankenstein and Cee-Lo Green as the voice of Murray the Mummy. Set to open September 25th:
EXCLUSIVE: Multiple offers are on the table for Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez & Guillermo Amoedo. It’s the next ‘Eli Roth Presents’ film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Roth most recently produced The Last Exorcism, a microbudget film that grossed $70 million worldwide. I’m told that several distributors are in talks, with the Weinstein Company and Relativity Media among them. The dealmaking will likely take place in Berlin, where, after the success of small-budget genre films like Chronicle and The Last Exorcism, these movies are becoming a license to print money. I’ve heard from potential buyers that the plot revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.
EXCLUSIVE: Selena Gomez and her production company July Moon has optioned the Jandy Nelson novel The Sky Is Everywhere. Gomez will develop the book as a star vehicle for the screen. She will play 17-year old Lennie Walker, a bookworm and band geek who plays clarinet and lives in the shadow of her extroverted older sister, Bailey. When Bailey dies suddenly, her younger sibling is left to take center stage and balance not one boy but two. One is his sister’s grieving boyfriend, the other a musically inclined transplant from Paris. Her whole world threatens to collapse all over again as she tries to juggle both guys.
EXCLUSIVE: Endgame Entertainment’s James D. Stern has put together the comedy Hot Mess with Selena Gomez in talks to star and Dave Meyers in discussions to direct. Based on the Black List script by Jenni Ross, Hot Mess revolves around four girls desperately trying to avoid becoming the hot messes they are destined to be. Young actresses are mobilizing for the other roles. Stern and Endgame’s Julie Goldstein are producing with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Marisa Yeres. Gomez last starred in Monte Carlo and will next be seen in The Muppets. While Meyers’ first feature was the genre remake The Hitcher, he works in this youth demo as a top video director who has teamed with Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Pink and just won a Video Music Award for Katy Perry’s Firework.
EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros made a fast deal Friday for screen rights to The Future of Us, a novel by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler. Denise Di Novi’s Di Novi Pictures will produce. Fox was also in the mix. The book is set in 1996, when a young girl gets the Internet at home for the first time. When she logs on, up pops a strange website. It’s her Facebook profile from 15 years in the future, and she and her best friend try to change themselves to fit into or reject their future lives. Subtle decisions drastically influence who they become. Asher wrote 13 Reasons Why, a first novel that has become a big international bestseller and which is being developed at Universal as a star vehicle for Selena Gomez to star and Strike Entertainment to produce. Mackler wrote The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things. The Future of Us will be published in November by Razorbill, with a 500,000-copy first printing. Hotchkiss and Associates’ Sean Daily made the deal with Andrea Brown Literary Agency and Writers House.
EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have acquired the Jay Asher novel 13 Reasons Why as a star vehicle for Selena Gomez. Strike’s Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing with Mandy Teefey of July Moon Productions.
Jennifer O’Kieffe has been set to adapt the novel, about a shy California high school student who returns from school to find a box waiting on his doorstep. It contains seven cassette tapes recorded by Hanna Baker, the classmate he had a crush on. Before she committed suicide, Hannah sent the tapes to one classmate with instructions to pass them on to a list of students like a chain letter. The tapes explain to 13 people how they played a role in her death. The book was a bestseller when published in 2007 by the Penguin Books young adult imprint RazorBill. Strike’s Kristel Laiblin is exec producer.
Gomez, who stars in the Disney Channel series The Wizards of Waverly Place, starred in the Tom Bezucha-directed Monte Carlo. She’s repped by CAA.
