EXCLUSIVE: Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in Ten Thousand Saints, a feature adaptation of Eleanor Henderson’s 2011 novel set in 1980s New York City in the age of CBGB, yuppies and gentrification that culminated in 1988′s Tompkins Square Park riots. Oscar-nominated duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) are attached to direct from their own script. The coming-of-age tale follows Vermont teenager Jude, who moves in with his hippie dad in NYC after his best friend Teddy overdoses. There he falls in with the no drugs, no sex, no meat straight-edge hardcore punk scene of the East Village. Steinfeld will play Eliza, who becomes pregnant with Teddy’s child and leans on his brother Johnny and Jude for support. Celine Rattray, Luca Borghese, and Archer Gray Productions’ Anne Carey are producing. Steinfeld is repped by ICM Partners and Coast to Coast and is set to star opposite Vince Vaughn in crime thriller Term Life.
BREAKING: Filmmaking team Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini have made deals to rewrite and direct My Beautiful Coma, the Chris Downey-scripted drama for Mandalay and Brett Ratner’s Rat Entertainment. Mandalay’s Matthew Rhodes and Cathy Schulman will produce, along with Ratner. Rat Entertainment’s John Cheng will executive produce, as will Bobby Sabelhaus. Mandalay Vision senior veep Jennifer Berman will oversee it and have a producing credit as well. The comedy is about an estranged couple who, after a car accident, find themselves side by side in comatose states. While sleeping, they each escape into their own alternate-reality where they are able to live out their every whim and fantasy, free of the banal details of real life. But when they mysteriously cross over into each other’s coma-worlds, all bets are off.
Mandalay Vision president Rhodes said “Shari and Bob’s talents are a perfect fit for this film’s broad appeal and innovative storytelling. My Beautiful Coma is a commercial comedy with an utterly unique visual style, and I can’t imagine anyone who would bring it to life with more fun and finesse than Shari and Bob.” Springer Berman & Pulcini, who last helmed the Kristen Wiig-starrer Girl Most Likely, are repped by Anonymous Content’s Adam Shulman and CAA. They were Oscar-nominated for scripting American Splendor.
EXCLUSIVE: Matt Dillon has been set to co-star in Imogene, joining Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening in the indie comedy that started shooting this week in New York. Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are directing, and Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray’s Maven Pictures is producing with Anonymous Cntent’s Alix Madigan and Steve Golin. Dillon plays the eccentric love interest of Bening’s character. He claims to be in the CIA, but his behavior suggests he just might be crazy. In the Michelle Morgan-scripted comedy, Wiig plays a playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt in reaction to the triple-whammy of losing her job, getting evicted and getting dumped by her boyfriend. She hopes to gain sympathy from her ex, but instead is consigned to return to the home of her gambling addict mother (Bening). Dillon last starred in Takers and guested on Modern Family. He’d been expected to star with Brendan Fraser and William H. Macy in the Charlie Matthau-directed Elmore Leonard novel adaptation Freaky Deaky, but when Fraser dropped out of that due to personal reasons, the other actors followed, and that film will now star Christian Slater, Billy Burke, and Crispin Glover. Dillon is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
EXCLUSIVE: Annette Bening has signed on to star with Kristen Wiig in Imogene for American Splendor helmers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. Shooting starts in late summer. Wiig plays a moderately successful Gotham playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to end up forced into the custody of her gambling-addict mother. Bening will play mom. The script’s by Michelle Morgan, and pic’s being produced by Maven Pictures’ Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler and Anonymous Content’s Alix Madigan, with Steve Golin, Wiig and Morgan the exec producers. UTA is repping North American rights on the film.
Bening, who was Oscar-nominated for The Kids Are All Right, is currently starring with Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in Fox Searchlight’s He Loves Me, which is being directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. I’ve heard it’s likely that Bening will be part of the Howard Hughes film that Warren Beatty will star in and direct for Paramount Pictures. She’s repped by CAA.
