RATINGS RAT RACE: NBC Wins With ‘SNL’ Special, ABC’s ‘Skating’ Makes Quiet Exit

Nellie Andreeva

NBC won 3 nights in the adults 18-49 demo last week and is on track to top at least as many this week after posting a nightly victory last night with Minute to Win It and a rebroadcast of Saturday Night Live Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas. (NBC already won on Monday with the Sing-Off finale and is guaranteed to dominate Sunday with football.) At 8 PM, Minute to Win It (2.1/7 in 18-49) was down 9% from last week but finished close second in the 8 PM hour. From 9-11 PM, Gilly Christmas (2.3/7) was down 26% from its premiere airing last December but still won the time period, drawing higher ratings than ABC and CBS combined in the 10 PM hour. For the night, NBC (2.3/7, 6.3 million) was tops in 18-49 and No.2 in total viewers.

CBS (1.9/6, 10.1 million) was the most watched network and second in 18-49 with all-repeats, NCIS (2.2/7, 12.3 million), which won the 8 PM hour, NCIS: Los Angeles (2.1/6, 11.3 million) and The Good Wife (1.3/4, 6.8 million).

Fox (1.7/5, 4.8 million) was third for the night with a Glee repeat (1.3/4, 4.1 million) at 8 PM, followed by Million Dollar Money Drop (2.0/5, 5.5 million), which was flat with the 9 PM episode of the game show on its premiere night … Read More »

RATINGS RAT RACE UPDATE: Soft Finish For ‘Sing-Off’, Weak Start For ‘Money Drop’, ‘Skating’ Flatlines & ESPN Tops Monday

Nellie Andreeva

UPDATE 3 PM: Ouch! The final Monday ratings came in, and Part 1 of the Skating with the Stars finale was adjusted down, way down, to a .5 in the 18-49 demo from 1.0 in the fast nationals that were inflated by NFL pre-emptions on ABC. That is down almost 40% from Skating‘s underwhelming ratings performance for the past couple of weeks. Also adjusted down was ABC’s Castle rerun (.7 for the 9-11 PM block.) And more bad news for new NBC comedy Perfect Couples. Its preview behind the Sing-Off finale also slipped down in the finals, to a 1.3. Overall, ESPN topped Monday night in all key measures for a fifth time this season, with its coverage of the Bears-Vikings game drawing 17.1 million viewers.

PREVIOUS 10 AM: After a very impressive sophomore run of NBC’s limited reality series The Sing-off leading into the finale last night, the two-hour closer (2.7/7 in adults 18-49) surprisingly posted a 18% week-to-week drop to rank as Sing-off‘s lowest-rated Monday telecast this cycle and tied as the lowest-rated overall. It still was the top-rated broadcast program on Monday night by a mile and was up 17% from the show’s finale last year. Immediately following the Sing-off finale, NBC aired a preview of new Thursday comedy series Perfect Couples (1.4/4), which held onto roughly half of its demo lead-in, not a promising sign heading into the series’ Jan. 20 debut at 8:30 PM on … Read More »

RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Sing Off’ Perks Up

Nellie Andreeva

NBC’s holiday reality series The Sing Off continues its impressive sophomore run. Last night, the a cappella singing competition (3.3/8 in adults 18-49, 9.4 million viewers) was up 18% from its series debut last Monday and up 22% from the show’s second airing on Wednesday to hit a series high. It posted NBC’s best 18-49 and total viewer numbers in the slot since Sept. 2009. Sing Off ran a solid second to CBS in the 18-49 demo from 8-10 PM, edging CBS veteran Rules of Engagement (3.4 vs 3.3) for No. 1 at 8:30 PM. Meanwhile, running distant fourth in the 8 PM hour was the other unscripted offering last night, ABC’s anemic Skating with the Stars (0.8/2), which matched last week’s rating. The network did only marginally better at 9 PM with the Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas special (1.1/3), which also finished fourth. Both NBC and ABC aired reruns at 10 PM, Chase (1.3/3) and Castle (1.2/3), respectively.

RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Sing-Off’ Up In Debut, American Country Awards Disappoint

Nellie Andreeva

CBS and NBC had the 8-10 PM time period pretty much all to themselves last night, with ABC and Fox largely out of contention. Fox aired the inaugural American Country Awards, which flopped with a 1.5/4 rating among adults 18-49 and 6 million viewers overall.  For comparison, the 44th Annual Country Music Association Awards on ABC drew a 4.7/13 in 18-49 and 16.5 million viewers last month, and the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS averaged a 3.2/8, 13.1 million in April. Meanwhile, ABC’s  Dancing with the Stars spinoff Skating with the Stars (1.0/3, 4.8 million) shed another 17% week-to-week in its third airing for a new low. Following a Modern Family rerun, which aired after the 90-minute Skating, ABC’s Castle (2.2/6) was down 12% from its last original on Nov. 15 for a season low.

NBC took advantage of the weakened competition. The 8-10 PM season premiere of reality series The Sing-Off (2.8/7) was up 22% from the show’s series premiere last year for a series high. Despite having a stronger lead-in than its regular one, The Event, freshman Chase (1.5/4), whose order was recently reduced from 22 to 18 episodes, was down 6% from last week.

It was a mixed bag for CBS. How I Met Your Mother Read More »

RATINGS RAT RACE: CBS Tops Monday With Reruns; NBC, Fox & CW Series Gain

Nellie Andreeva

This is a throwback to the dog days of summer: CBS’ all-rerun Monday lineup dominated the original competition last night. The network’s comedy reruns – Two And A Half Men (3.0/8), How I Met Your Mother (2.7/8), Rules Of Engagement (2.4/6) and Mike & Molly (2.3/6) – ranked as the 4 highest-rated programs on the night among adults 18-49. With a Hawaii Five-0 repeat (1.9/5) also winning its 10 PM slot, CBS easily topped the night in 18-49 (2.4/6) and total viewers (8.6 million).

ABC’s Dancing with the Stars spinoff Skating with the Stars (1.2/3) dived 50% from its mediocre premiere behind Dancing’s performance finale last week. In another CMA tie-in, ABC aired the CMA Country Christmas special (1.4/4) from 9:30-11 PM, following a 90-minute Skating.

With no Dancing and CBS in repeats, NBC, Fox and the CW’s originals posted ratings increases. NBC’s Chuck (2.0/6, 6.2 million) was up 18% from last week to match its season high in 18-49 and hit a new season high in total viewers. The fall finale of The Event (1.9/5) was up 12%, while Chase (1.6/4) was up 12%. Following a House repeat (1.6/4) a new Lie to Me (2.2/6, 6.3 million) on Fox was up 29% to post season highs in adults … Read More »

Ratings Rat Race: ‘Dancing’ Rocks, ‘Skating’ Disappoints While ‘Mike & Molly’ Hits Highs

Nellie Andreeva

UPDATE 2PM: The final Nielsen ratings for last night are in, and the Bristol Palin-fueled Dancing with the Stars (23.7 million, 4.9/13 in adults 18-49) posted the strongest results for a Dancing performance finale in six seasons, since the fifth cycle’s Monday finale in November 2007. (Dancing airs two cycles every broadcast season.) Versus last year, the show was up by 3.3 million viewers and by 23% in 18-49. The strong ratings for Dancing followed a wave of publicity surrounding Palin’s ability to escape elimination despite so-so marks from the judges and make it all the way to the finals. She was also at the center of  several threat s, including one that involved a letter laced with white powder that was received at Dancing‘s production offices over the weekend.  Meanwhile, the premiere of the Dancing spinoff Skating with the Stars wound up with a final tally of 2.4/6 and 9.4 million viewers, holding onto less than 50% of its Dancing lead-in. Other adjustments in the finals: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 gained a tenth to a 3.3/9, while Fox’s Lie to Me dropped a tenth to a 1.7/5. Read More »

ABC Assembles ‘Motley Crue’ Cast For ‘Skating With the Stars’ Reality Series

By | Tuesday November 2, 2010 @ 6:48pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

The ice rink proves to be less appealing for celebrities than the parquet floor as ABC announced a far less buzzworthy cast for its Dancing with the Stars spinoff, Skating with the Stars, than the ones it has been able to assemble for the mothership series. Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel is probably the biggest name on the roster which features not one but two actresses on soap operas, All My Children‘s Rebecca Budig and Young and The Restless‘ Sean Young as well as Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil. They will be joined by Olympic gold-winning skier Jonny Moseley and Disney Channel actor Brandon Mychal Smith.
