‘Submarine’s Craig Roberts Lands Lead In Amazon Pilot ‘Red Oaks’EXCLUSIVE: Welsh thesp Craig Roberts (Submarine, Skins, The Double) has landed the lead in Amazon Studios‘ pilot Red Oaks, from Steven Soderbergh and David Gordon Green. He’ll play David Myers, a 20-year-old college student who’s hired as an assistant tennis pro at the predominantly Jewish Red Oaks country club circa 1985 and tries to figure out what kind of life he wants to lead. Roberts had a breakout turn in Richard Ayoade’s Submarine, which nabbed him the London Film Critics’ Young British Performer of the Year Award and the 2012 British Independent Film Awards’ Most Promising Newcomer Award. He’s had a solid summer, turning in a memorable supporting performance as a fraternity pledge in Universal’s Neighbors and appearing in Sony’s current comedy hit 22 Jump Street. He’s repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment, and Curtis Brown Group in the UK.

Myriad Pictures is handling all international rights on Miss Meadows, written and directed by Karen Leigh Hopkins. The dark satire/fairy tale stars Katie Holmes and James Badge Dale. Myriad will introduce it to buyers in Toronto. Holmes plays a sweet and proper elementary school teacher who moonlights as a gun-toting vigilante. Elle Driver Acquires Foreign Rights To Sundance Midnight Film ‘Black Rock’

January 24, 2012 – Sundance Film Festival – Submarine Entertainment announced today that it has sold all foreign rights to Katie Aselton’s film BLACK ROCK to Elle Driver. The deal was negotiated by David Koh, Josh Braun & Dan Braun of Submarine Entertainment on behalf of the Producers and Director and Adeline Fontan Tessaur of Elle Driver. Black Rock was Directed by Katie Aselton. Executive Produced by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass. Produced by Adele Romanski. Co-Produced by Mary Budd. Cinematography by Hillary Spera. Edited by Jacob Vaughan. Composed by Peter Golub. LD Entertainment will release theatrically later this year domestically. The film screens again Wednesday, January 25th at Midnight at the Egyptian Theater at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight Section.

Described as a mix between Deliverance and Thelma and Louise, the film focuses on three female friends who set aside their personal issues and organize a girls getaway weekend on a remote island on the coast of Maine. One wrong move turns into another as there is a deadly fight for survival. The film was written by Aselton’s husband Mark Duplass.

Spike TV Pacts With Submarine To Hatch Non-Scripted Shows

EXCLUSIVE: Spike TV has formed an alliance with Submarine Entertainment’s Josh Braun to find talent from the independent film sphere and develop non-scripted programming for the cable network. It marks the first major return into television for Braun, the former Fremantle Head of Sales who now runs Submarine with Dan Braun. Braun has refocused on producing and brokering deals for films like A History Of Violence, House Of The Devil and Page One: Inside The NY Times. Braun has had a hot hand at 2012 Sundance, brokering four deals for festival films. They include an HBO acquisition of Me @ The Zoo, the Sony Pictures Classics acquisition of the documentary Searching For Sugar Man, Magnolia’s buy of the docu The Queen Of Versailles, and the LD Entertainment acquisition of the Midnight title Black Rock. ”This deal signifies Spike’s commitment to finding fresh voices outside the traditional non-scripted world,” said Sharon Levy, EVP Original Series at Spike. “No one is better at identifying filmmakers with unique stories to tell than Josh Braun, and now he will help find them for Spike.” The network’s push into reality series has included Auction Hunters, Bar Rescue, Flip Men, Repo Games, and the recently-launched Ink Master.
