IT’S GOOD TO BE BAD! ‘Despicable Me 3D’ Doubles Expectations For $60.1M Weekend; R-Rated ‘Predators’ On Target With $25.3M; ‘Eclipse’ Global Cume Now $456M; See How This Hollywood Summer Is Doing Overseas

SUNDAY AM: It was a great weekend at the box office with the total tally $202M, up an impressive +41.4% from last year. And that doesn’t factor in next week which features the most anticipated movie of the summer, Chris Nolan’s Inception. Year to date, 2010 revenues are running $5.9M, that up 5.06% over last year. But attendance is down 1.42%. Summer 2010′s grosses are even more important internationally than domestic for a lot of motion pictures. So in this extended report I’ve included additional detail on the overseas releases all heavily impacted by World Cup play:

despicable_me_movie_poster_02-550x8741. North American box office numbers show that Universal Pictures is enjoying something it hasn’t had in a very long time: a big fat hit film. That’s because weeks of great parent-kid family tracking for Despicable Me 3D translated into what even rival studios told me was ”amazing” attendance of Friday’s $21.7 million and Saturday’s $21.3M for a $60.1M weekend opening despite having two other 3D family films in the marketplace. Still, Despicable Me found 3,476 theaters, of which 1,551 locations were in 3D, and managed to double Universal’s expectations of opening domestic grosses. Exit polling data showed the film received an “A” Cinemascore and the audience was 55% kids 12 years and under and parents.

FIREWORKS FOR ‘ECLIPSE’: Can’t Beat ‘New Moon’ But Still $280M Worldwide; ‘Last Airbender’ & ‘Toy Story 3′ Overperform

MONDAY PM UPDATE: Sources tell me that Monday’s grosses of $18M for Summit Entertainment’s Eclipse and $13.5M for Pixar/Disney’s Toy Story 3 were “huge”, while the $11.7M for Paramount’s The Last Airbender moved it down to 3rd place for the first time since the M Night Shyamalan pic’s opening day. Sony Pictures’ Grown Ups took in $7.1M Monday, Fox’s Knight And Day $3.8M, and Sony’s Karate Kid $3.1M. (I’ll update all the numbers in the morning.)

MONDAY AM: Here’s the Top 10:

1. Newcomer The Twilight Saga: Eclipse looked like a record-breaker after opening to $68.5M Wednesday from 4,468 dates for a fast start. Then third pic in the franchise, and the best-reviewed, went on to make $24.2M Thursday, $28.6M Friday, $23.9M Saturday, $13.7 Sunday, and an estimated $16.4M Monday. eclipse orangeSo that’s a non-record-breaking $69M for the 3-day weekend, and $82.5M for the 4-day July Fourth Holiday, $162 for the first 5 days, and a total $175.3M for the full 6-day release. No, it didn’t beat New Moon‘s $179M over a Thanksgiving weekend. But don’t forget that Fourth Of July is a dramatically down day for movie attendance. Nor could Eclipse beat Spider-Man 2 which still holds the 6-day July 4th holiday record with $180M. Despite all that, Eclipse made gobs of money, so Summit is ecstatic – especially because the threequel made inroads with males (65% female/35% male) compared to the sequel (only 80%/20%). And it received an “A” Cinemascore. UPDATE: ‘Last Airbender’ Opens To $16M Thursday, Including $3M Midnights

thelastairbender-movie-aang-poster-550x814UPDATESources tell me that Paramount’s The Last Airbender opened to $16+M Thursday, including the $3 million from its midnight shows. The pic based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series should be on its way to $60M for the 5-day July Fourth Holiday and a shot at 2nd place.

Hard to believe but there’s another movie opening this weekend besides the Twilight Saga’s Eclipse. It’s Paramount’s The Last Airbender 3D from M Night Shyamalan, and I’ve just learned it quietly opened to a solid $3 million in Thursday midnight screenings because of the studio’s counterprogramming strategy. Paramount says that’s the highest midnight gross this summer for a non-sequel. Unfortunately, the studio is stuck with a high price tag of $145M, including the 3D conversion costs of this actioner based on the animated TV series from Nickelodeon called “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, and what rival studios are telling me is at least a $50+M marketing campaign. But the movie has been tracking well with males of all ages and kids and now looks to break M Night’s recent drought at the box office. That’s despite horrid reviews — only 6% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, worse than this summer’s biggest bomb Jonah Hex.
