Nellie Andreeva

UPDATE: I hear ABC Family’s series order to drama pilot The Lying Game is expected to be finalized on Tuesday, with Game joining recently greenlighed comedy series The Great State of Georgia and dramas The Nine Lives of Chloe King and Switched at Birth. And the network may not be done yet with its series orders. I hear that a fifth pilot, What Would Jane Do, has extended the options on the actors and remains in contention. With The Lying Game, ABC Family also extended the cast first while it was figuring out a pickup deal. What Would Jane Do, written by April Blair, directed by Lev L. Spiro and produced by Gavin Polone, follows 16-year-old Jane (Erica Dasher), who lands a job at a hip retail company when they mistake her for an adult.

Three weeks ago, ABC picked up 3 of its 6 pilots to series with 10-episode orders: the Raven Symone comedy The Great State of Georgia and 2 dramas, The Nine Lives of Chloe King and Switched at Birth. I reported at the time that, while not picked up, drama pilot The Lying Game remained in contention, with ABC Family and producers Warner Horizon and Alloy  Entertainment looking at budget and other issues to make a series order possible. In another promising sign, the … Read More »

Nellie Andreeva

UPDATED: Now this is a back order we rarely see — ABC Family is picking up 20 additional episodes of freshman comedy Melissa & Joey, bringing the show’s freshman season to a whopping 30 episodes. Who will claim now that cable creators have it easy with smaller orders than their broadcast counterparts? Additionally, ABC Family greenlighted 4 pilots, an untitled project from The Secret Life of the American Teenager creator Brenda Hampton, The Great State of Georgia, What Would Jane Do and The Lying Game. They joined the 3 pilots ordered last week by the cable network, Strut, Nine Lives and Switched at Birth, in what is shaping up as one of the largest pilot slates for a cable network. The pickup for Melissa & Joey is no surprise and had been in the works for awhile.
